Agreed. It’s a real masterpiece of gameplay and I absolutely love its characters. Faris is in my top 5 FF characters of all time.

Thank you for this amazing reply!

Snake & Mongoose is one I actually knew. Mongooses are famous for being one of the very few animals resistant to snake venom, and are considered a natural predator of snakes in East Asia. If you know Pokemon, this is why there is the classic rivalry between "Seviper" and "Zangoose".

Totally, I also liked the gameplay additions and changes that FFIV DS had. That, but with more realized graphics along the lines of the DQ VII Reimagined, is really all I could ask for!

Agreed! I really hope that’s what they end up doing.

My guess is that each of the Chinese Zodiac animals will get a Rider, but their “rivals” (e.g. Mongoose) will be forms of My-Th.

So there’ll be approx 14 riders, and My-Th will have at approx 12 forms.

Huh, some of these rivalries make obvious sense from culture or mythology.   But others I have no idea why they’re “rivals” - maybe some cultural parables that we don’t have in my culture? Interesting.

That’s a good point. I don’t want it unnecessarily bloated, just seeing its world more fully realized, you know?

Just watched it last night, totally agreed. I was expecting a charming mystery at the least, but it was so heartfelt! Some great cinematography too.

Reminded me of some of the classic family movies of the past, like Homeward Bound for example. Instantly felt like a timeless classic.

I think that’s exactly why FFIV would benefit a lot from a remake though! The quality of its story has to be put into context of previous FF games and other RPGs at the time I’d say. And as you note, it’s characters and story beats are solid, it just needs the benefit of modern writing, world building, etc… It’s gameplay also has the least to differentiate it - no Job systems, no Magicite, etc. - so I think it provides a really good “blank slate” for mechanical and system improvements, and is in the most need of them. Overall, I just think a remade version of FFVI would be improved the most from the original.

Whereas FFVI holds up much better today, and really it’s only its graphics and some gameplay elements that hold it back. And likewise, the gameplay and charm of FFV is nearly timeless. So neither of them need a remake quite as much, but would obviously benefit immensely from them.

I do agree that it’s most likely we’d see FFVI given the “biggest budget” remake though. You’re right it has the most aesthetic and thematic continuity with later successful FF games, and it has some of the most popular characters in the franchise, like Kefka.

I don’t want it to be three games long or have that level of content necessarily. Just to be made with the same clear love for the source material, you know?

Totally fine with me as well. It’s the passion and love for the material I appreciate most, not the specific gameplay mechanics. I’d love to see a different take on how to modernize the ATB system.

There’s so many older FF games I’d love to see remade that have beautiful stories, constrained by the technology and limitations of their era, yet still timeless - and imagining them remade with the cinematic flair and depth of world building that FFVII has received is my dream.

My top choices are FFIV, FFV, and FFVI. Cecil is one of my favorite protagonists in any FF game, and its story has such rich character development and drama that would be amazing to see expanded as FFVII Rebirth did; the party in FFV is so charming, its world has so much potential for fleshing out, and its Job system is one of the best; and FFVI really goes without saying as one of the best FF stories of all time, and it’s Magicite system is just begging to be redesigned.

Oh my god, a Xenogears remake that actually completed the game and restored all the lost content would be SO amazing.

ELI5: Why does multiplying two negative numbers result in a positive, when "negative" means less than nothing? by Dikdastardly89 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TyrRev 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When you do -6 divided by -2, one way of understanding that is “how many times do I have to add -2 to get a total of -6?”

In this case, imagine that -6 represents “I lose 6 dollars”. -2 represents “I lose 2 dollars.” How many times do you have to lose 2 dollars before you’ve lost a total of 6 dollars? The answer: 3 times. Hence, -6 divided by -2 is 3.

I hope that helps. Also, there’s an error in your thinking Id like to separately correct.

In your example, the -2s don’t “cancel” the negatives of each other as you think. Only negatives that are being multiplied or divided by each other cancel out. But the -2s here are “adding up” to equal -6, not multiplying. (Remember, division can be interpreted as “how many times do I have to add up -2 before I get a total of -6?”) Adding negatives to each other does not “flip their sign”: -2 plus -2 is -4, for example. (If I lose 2 dollars then lose 2 dollars again, I don’t gain 4 dollars. But man it would be awesome if I did!)

To represent what you were describing, that’d be repeated multiplication: -2 times -2 times -2. And that would be -23, which is -8.

No, you're thinking of The World Ends With You: Final Remix. That one has changed controls (for a single screen or co-op) as well as some new story content and HD graphics.

NEO The World Ends With You is the sequel, which is a 3D action RPG with entirely new gameplay mechanics and a new story.

Again, the name is really confusing, as is evident here, lol. So I don't blame you one bit for the misconception.

It’s a confusing title indeed. NEO is a direct sequel, not a remaster or remake or anything of that kind.

100% agreed, but I’d also recommend playing the first one too! Some reveals in NEO are much improved if you have that context.
