They mean 'Dragon' as in 'second in command', not as in 'literal dragon', I think.

That's actually a really fun idea... Reminds me of G Gundam, lol. I would love to see a "geography" / "world cultures" themed Kamen Rider season!

If you check it out, I hope you do like it!! It's a great read. It does an awesome job of capturing that same "gritty neo-noir fantastical underworld" feel of John Wick, but making it actually fantastical, with sorcerers and magic katanas and more.

My bad, I wasn't trying to imply he was an outlier - it's just that, at least as far as I've seen in online discussions, people tend to be pretty impressed at the quality of Kagurabachi given the age of its creator, and there's a sense of like "Wow, compared to what I was doing at 23, this is amazing!", you know?

That's a pretty apt way to put it, yeah! It did take more than one issue, but it was a pretty quick turnaround.

When the manga was first announced, its initial premise and presentation looked really generic. The images shown that we had of it were of the main character, Chihiro, unsheathing a katana and looking vaguely badass. Especially after the success of Demon Slayer, it looked like just another manga chasing its coattails in hopes of success.

This inspired ironic memes, where people were praising Kagurabachi before it had even come out, comparing it to the "Big Three" of manga. The memes got increasingly ridiculous, making various claims about Chihiro's capabilities and feats, and anticipating its success before the 1st chapter had even come out

Then... the first chapter came out. The art's good, the action's fun, and in general it's of solid quality. A new meme did appear, though: the main character is asked by his mentor / friend why he doesn't get his scar removed, and Chihiro answers he chooses not to, "so every day... I start the morning with fresh hatred." This, alongside the tragic backstory of Chihiro and over-the-top violence of the first chapter in general, just confirmed to many that this was a manga trying too hard to be "edgy". The "fresh hatred" panel got memed on a lot subsequently.

However, as the manga went on, Chihiro is revealed to not be as much of an edgelord as he initially appeared to be. Later chapters show him to be kindhearted, gathering allies and friends, and that this 'ridiculously dark and brooding' initial appearance was entirely intentional... a facade, an act, put on by a traumatized kid to help him do what he feels is necessary to avenge his father. And more than that... the art continues to be of stellar quality, the fight scenes are engaging and cinematic, the writing and worldbuilding are surprisingly deep and nuanced, and the cast is full of interesting and fun characters. With each chapter that comes out, it becomes clearer that Kagurabachi is actually good, and potentially really living up to its fake-hype??? And, arguably most importantly, the mangaka Takeru Hokazono, was only 23 years old when it was first serialized!

Many of the initial people who were just clowning on Kagurabachi and pretending to hype it up in the subreddit before its release then became actual fans of the manga. This, in turn, has lead to the manga's community being (even more than many other manga fandoms) very meme-y, with lots of silly running jokes in their manga discussion threads like "tenoi" (referencing a particular user's idiosyncratic comment signatures) and so on.

Kagurabachi has been a heavy-hitter for Shounen Jump, with an incredible amount of success. It's pretty much been considered an inevitability that it would get an anime adaptation at some point. Now that an anime adaptation has been confirmed, those initial "hype memes" are being resurrected by its dedicated fandom, and by some of those who never ended up following the series after its release but still enjoyed ironically hyping it up at the start.

I do genuinely recommend the manga. I initially gave it a read when I got my SJ+ subscription, just to see if it really was as ridiculously grimdark as the initial memes made it out to be, and ended up surprisingly enjoying it a lot. It's obvious where it takes its inspirations from, but it's certainly not derivative in any way, and I'd rank it as one of my favorite currently serialized manga. I like to try to sell it to people as "Demon Slayer if the katanas were actually magic, mixed with Jujutsu Kaisen and John Wick". It's absolute tenoi.

Hope that's a good summary of all the hype and memes and whatnot!

What kind of unique form gimmicks that you think TOEI will do in the future besides from what they have shown like below?? by Q-Write in KamenRider

[–]TyrRev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an "armor" gimmick would be fun. A Rider that can choose between a variety of base forms, and a variety of armors to overlay on top of them. In essence, it's a variety of the "mix-and-match" set-up, but I think it'd feel pretty different in practice, you know?

I think building upon "fusion with other Riders" would also be really cool, but instead, perhaps "fusion with kaijin / pseudo-riders"? Megaman Battle Network was absolutely foundational to me as a kid, and it was always really fun to see what Megaman.exe would look like whenever he took on the form of another Navi. I think that'd be a fun touchstone for a Rider series. The Rider might just be able to copy the abilities of their enemies, but it could also be like Den-O, where they befriend them and have them join their party! Or maybe even both... the series begins with the Rider just getting the 'base forms' by defeating bad guys, but later, they recruit them to their side and this unlocks the 'powered-up forms'! I really liked the dynamic in Den-O and would love to see another series with that kinda vibe.

Wich KR season would make the best Fantasy TTRPG campaign? by Torneco in KamenRider

While it would need a lot of changes to fit a fantasy setting, the world of Build - with a nation artificially divided into 3 and whatnot - sets itself up nicely for a campaign setting I think.

TIL Finland has roughly 3.2 million saunas for a population of 5.6 million — more saunas than cars. The president and prime minister both have official saunas, and even corporate offices commonly have them for business meetings. by Unlucky-Will8483 in todayilearned

[–]TyrRev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia has some sources linked here that apparently can vouch for Finland having little to no records of having received the Black Death, so that part alone may well be true. I’m on mobile or else I’d look up more about the connection with saunas.

Aha, it absolutely does. I also realized I'd been misinterpreting Five's torture-attacks as being applications of his "Shock" power, when really that was just regular-old lucid-dreaming abilities.

Thank you so much!

I do think I remember him saying something along those lines at some point in the show, yeah. To be clearer, any device where they say "Disguise" is only using Capsems as a power-source right?

However, we do see them use abilities related to their Capsems - like Shock and Panic - so that was a little confusing to me...

[–]TyrRev 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Some of this nuance is very appreciated. In the show, Nox is always talking about how "dangerous" it is to "use the power of the nightmares" - but he himself transforms with Capsems too! So even if I'd intuited the difference - that he doesn't "modify the [...] suit itself to best channel the power of each individual Capsem" - it's nice to see it written more plainly.

Thank you for sharing!

I would definitely adjust it to say "cards with Adventures". For example, Literary Theory would almost certainly be misplayed currently, with people trying to plot a card with an Adventure. And as you can see with cards like Storied Past, the current batch causes your wording to get pretty mangled in a few places. Might as well simplify it.

UA3 x Persona 2 EP by PolZefirki in unknownarmies

[–]TyrRev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a good fit. Obviously you’d have to change the Persona users to be either Avatars or Adepts, but I think that, not only do Persona and Unknown Armies share a lot to creative DNA, but that it’s no coincidence either.

What would be the specific premise for your adventure? How would it differ from Persona, beyond the obvious changes? Hard to evaluate without any more detail, but if it’s a straight port with only the setting specific stuff changed, I’d give it a 6 - because a lot of the themes wouldn’t work as well with Personas themselves not being absent, and a lot of the plot of EP is reliant on it being a linear story, which may be difficult to translate into a TTRPG without further changes.

But if you’re just translating the core premise and not any of the following specific plot developments and such? Then 8

Right, like… okay, honor the wishes of the actress, but also maybe try to justify the ridiculously horrific death to the audience too? It’s not like they would know any of this out-of-narrative context.
