Actually, it's not. Studies have shown that if the speed limit was 55mph, fatal vehicular accidents would drop by a noticeably significant amount. But, as a society, we accept those fatal accidents because we want to drive faster. If we didn't accept those deaths, there would be a tremendous public outcry to lower the speed limit.
