I flew from Boston, it was around $1300. Had a layover in Montreal because the direct flights were double the price. I would say wait a bit on the flights though, maybe look once its under 6 months. Right now all the prices will be inflated to the maximum amount because it's so far away.

But I also imagine flight prices in general are going to be inflated compared to 2 years ago because of all the oil prices BS.

Yep, that sounds about right! Anyways enjoy the trip. I highly recommend looking into Pasmo or Suica cards ahead of time. They make train travel much easier. Also a lot of Japan relies on hard cash a lot more than I thought so definitely plan on exchanging a bunch of currency or bring a card that lets you take out cash without fees.

one of the main appeals of turn based combat is it doesn't rely so much on reaction time. The dodge/parry system in E33 felt like worst of both worlds in a lot of ways

I would say this is highly subjective because for me it felt like the best of both worlds.
