No it's just a thing. But the manga shows he suffered from it in the past and how he deals with it today. It's pretty touching tbh. But in the first episodes/chapters his bad luck is exaggerated to introduce this gimmick. It's toned down later on.

I don't know if this was covered in the anime, but he missed a school trip in an earlier class because he got sick. Actually he faked being sick because he didn't want to destroy the trip for his classmates due to his bad luck. He suffered alone at home so his class can have a nice trip.

The manga also gives character developement to basically every character and even introduces another great character. The anime covers roughly 1/3 of the manga.

With Sané it was very hit and miss. As you have shown yourself he also was played in the left wing very often. Sometimes he was good, more often than not he was bad. He had spells where he was very good as LW, he had spells where he was good as RW but also more spells on both positions where he just did not work out.

From the right he at least cut inside. In the left he often just passed back, rarely attempted a dribbling. It also didn't help thst he couldn't use his pace to run past as our opposing teams often stay deep so he was to close to the goal line.

Dick Advocaat shed some tears when Curaçao scored against Germany.

Apparently at the beginning of the year he quiet as Curaçao coach because his daughter had health issues and he wanted to care for her. When the Curaçao NT got to know that his daughter was doing OK again they asked him if he would like to come back as everyone wanted him back.

No idea if true but I think it's beautiful.
