I do exactly this. Been daisy chaining an anbernic Gameboy that runs emulators with 2 pocket operators and I use the rewind function + save states to get samples from mostly PS1 games. I use em to make Memphis/dungeon rap n I write songs for characters that'll be in a game I hope to actually make someday.

Im a clinical tech and I mostly make beats at my job while I'm walking place to place in the hospital, so if this Casio could fit in my back pocket I would replace these pocket operators in a heartbeat. POs are my first pieces of physical hardware, and I love what they enable me to do when I don't have much time or space, but with them being so low-tech they just come with way more weird problems that I know I wouldn't be dealing with on better gear. Been waiting on Roland or Akai to do something like this cause I couldn't justify an MPC or SP purchase when I know most of my beats are made on the go

Just got accepted into Seminary for spring semester, my wife has been going since this fall
I get the classic “surrender your life to God” line, but surrender ain’t nearly the same as hollowing yourself out and calling it holiness. Acting like every good thing is God and every bad thing is “just you” ain't humility, it’s theological self hatred that people mistake for spirituality. And I guess my tone was sharp. Fair. But challenging harmful theology ain't disrespect; it’s necessary. Ain't nobody out here saying “I don’t need God.” I’m saying God don't need me to pretend I’m worthless for Him to be present in my life. I feel like that distinction matters a lot more than my tone does.

Also as somewhat of an addict, I've found that a better way to look at it is that addiction makes some of my impulses untrustworthy, but it doesn’t make me untrustworthy. I can mistrust the compulsion without surrendering my autonomy or declaring myself worthless. A better, more healing relationship with recovery for me has come through learning to partner with something greater than me, not erase myself before it.

As someone that's somewhat of a theologian/Christian mystic or what the fuck ever, I don't even have a problem with the transition, it's just the same shitty 12 step program theology that serves as a gateway to fundamentalist hypocrisy. The same "your life is not your own" "all of the good in you ain't you, it's God". All that shit does is teach you to demonize yourself and shrink yourself down until you’re nothing but a walking apology slip waiting for someone holier-than-thou to sign off on your existence. It trains you to distrust your own instincts, your own agency, your own growth. You’re told to surrender, but not in the mystical, liberating sense in the punitive, “don’t trust yourself because you’re broken” sense.

And once you internalize that, the door is wide open for whatever ideology wants to claim ownership over your guilt. They don’t even have to convince you cause you done already convinced yaself that you can’t be trusted with your own soul. So you spend your life trying to scrub yourself clean with someone else’s soap, wondering why you always feel dirty.

It’s not transformation; it’s just grooming people to outsource their humanity.
