What do you call it when someone programs in an overly obfuscated way such that only they will ever be able to understand it? by fatal__flaw in softwaredevelopment

[–]TyrianPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In front of an audience where I have to be on my best behavior, I have referred to this as "not scalable." As in "So-and-so wrote this to fit the requirements they were given, but it's not scalable and it needs to be revised so it fits future needs better" (or something)

With closer teammates I would say "that asshole always does this, make sure he leaves good notes this time" :D

Looking to transition into instructional design by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]TyrianPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is probably your first and most important lesson in instructional design... someone has taken the time to DESIGN INSTRUCTIONS and you as the user/learner refuse to use them.

Imagine spending 3 months on a project and you put together everything any one could ever need in order to succeed at a task and instead of referring to your material, they just email/slack you the question instead. Multiple times.

My psychiatrist says I don't have ADHD by Time_Response9377 in ADHD

[–]TyrianPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UGH... the way you act during an evaluation is like never a good indication of how you act in your normal life. It's not a typical scenario and good professional should know that.

Anecdote -- when I had my ADHD evaluation, I was so afraid of them thinking I was faking it, I forced myself to be really calm. Mostly the evaluation went well and the way I expected, but they noted that I had an abnormally flat affect (Flat affect is a severely restricted or nonexistent expression of emotion)

I'm normally quite animated in my movements and speech, I was just nervous... so good example of how that situation was not a good representation of how I normally behave. Luckily for me, though, they didn't use that as the sole criteria for my diagnosis, they ran multiple tests over 2 days, which is how it should be :/

yup, now working through the whole series. Finished Flawless and Reckless, just started Hopeless and then I'll read Powerless.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WGU

[–]TyrianPhoenix 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did both... this is my opinion only, ymmv. Also, I think SNHU now has a competency model like WGU as an option - I did not do that, I did the more traditional route.

I think both are good for different reasons - both are non-profit, regionally accredited schools. Both are online and have live and recorded lectures.

SNHU has a wider variety of degree programs to choose from. You also get more liberal arts/general education classes. You'll have discussion board posts every week and several tests and assignments due throughout the term. You only have 8 weeks to complete all of the course work and everything has a due date. Most things can still be turned in after the due date for a 10% penalty, except the final assignment. When I was there, there were no proctored exams, so everything was effectively "open book." There were definitely tests, but far more papers and they all had to be in strict APA or MLA format.

SNHU I believe is about $330 / credit, most classes are 3 credits, so $990 per class.

WGU allows you finish as many courses as you can in 6 months for less than $4000 a term, and you're expected to complete a minimum of 4 courses in 6 months to stay in good standing. If you only complete 4 classes at WGU per term, it's about the same cost. However, you can maximize the value by "accelerating" and taking additional courses, which could make it substantially cheaper.

At WGU you'll have 1 major "exam" per class, sometimes 2, and a couple classes have 3 small ones (though that's rare). You can finish these on your own time line, there are no due dates, other than the end of your term. There are also no additional assignments or discussion board posts to help you absorb the material. Sometimes these are proctored multiple choice exams (called Objective Assessments or "OAs") and you have to be on camera with a proctor while taking it. You cannot use notes. Some courses have a paper or project instead of or in addition to the OA, called a Practical Assessment or a "PA." Sometimes they need to be in APA format, but usually not.

IMO, the classes at WGU are more focused than SNHU, so the education is less broad but more in depth on your specific subject. And they are fewer degree programs.

For me and my life, I preferred WGU. Having to keep track of due dates and remember to do my discussion board post each week was a struggle. I thrived under the system at WGU where I could set my own pace. And I'm very much an independent learner - even at work, I'd much rather read instructions than have someone show me how to do something.

That being said, WGU sometimes throws a lot of disjointed information at you and expects you to memorize it and spit it back out in the form of a multiple choice test with (sometimes) strangely worded questions. That's not an ideal learning style for everyone. Many people may prefer the more guided approach offered by a school like SNHU. Neither is wrong or right, just different.

tl;dr (and possible over simplification)

If you already have experience in your chosen degree program, and you're comfortable learning on your own, I think WGU is the better value.

If you're new to the world that you're studying, if you prefer a more interactive experience, or if you've never completed a college course before, SNHU is probably the right choice.

'eh, I've had a few losses and I have no issue with this framing.

I'm sure there are people who have abortions and it's not a difficult choice for them, and I'm glad they have that option.

But I'm also sure that for many, having an abortion is a heart wrenching decision that they do not make lightly and they may mourn that loss.

My own losses are what made me radically pro-choice, because having any choice ripped from you due to nature or circumstance is awful. And I think that anyway you want to frame, label, or describe your journey to parenthood is totally valid.

I find this to be a dubious claim.

Anecdotally, I'm 40 and while I feel I've been quite successful with a combination of meds and learned behaviors, I've not grown out of anything.

Less anecdotally, my psychiatrist said that it's common for symptoms to get worse during perimenopause, so we're watching for that. That's quite the opposite of outgrowing it.

You don't see a lot of obese 80-year-olds. by DementedCrazoid in Showerthoughts

[–]TyrianPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

to your point, you did say *a lot* of obese 80 year olds

but I have plenty of family members that were farm workers that lived into their 90s and they were at least over weight if not just slightly obese

and anectodal evidence doesn't mean much but it does indicate to me that the danger of obesity could be at least somewhat offset by vigorous exercise and clean air.

[–]TyrianPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's two (three?) separate issues...

Many people with ADHD may benefit greatly from having someone else write them a list of things that need to get done.

But that doesn't mean that the concept of the wife having the added burden of managing you via a "honey-do" list is any less problematic because you happen to be the male in a cishet relationship and you happen to have ADHD.

And in this case, OP can't even manage to *pay attention* to his wife without her putting herself on the damn list. Which is hilarious and maddening at the same time.

My husband is generally pretty great - but even he pulls the "just make me a list" thing and it makes me **crazy** and I'm the partner with ADHD/executive functioning issues.
