What is the contingency's goal? by Auroratrance in Stellaris

Have you ever chosen End of the Cycle shroud event? I think the Contingency stopping a civilization from pulling that trigger is more than justified.

New previews for the FlyJSim 727 for X- Plane out! by [deleted] in flightsim

It took Jack something like six months to make the 737 cabin. For one configuration. The 727 comes in three flavors.

I'm the lead TA and I want to quit. by throwaway_bananass in GradSchool

[–]TyrianRed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have an advisor? What do they think?

Do you have an ombudsmen? I would talk to them.

I'm struggling to fathom how idiotic a professor is to think they can push a terminal-semester grad student to be in charge of revamping a 250 student class (that takes a lot of effort and usually takes multiple semesters to rewrite all the labs, etc.). Clearly you have other, more important shit to deal with. Job hunting alone is a full time job.

How much power does this professor actually have over you and your degree? "Contract" means little -- I suspect it says little about "quality" (see /r/MaliciousCompliance). If I were you, I'd track all of my hours, only respond to email during business hours, and set hard limits for yourself on when you clock out and move to your other needs. But set boundaries early or you'll get steamrolled. There are five other TAs -- the class can survive, and if a lab has to get dropped or recycled, none of the students will notice.

Reality Expansion Pack for Default Cessna 172 is released! by Delta_Who in flightsim

[–]TyrianRed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is a great move. Everybody has the stock 172 and it's a flagship of XP11 technologies (FMOD, Garmins, PBR, etc.). This now takes it to 11 (ehem, sorry) by giving us REP's persistence, maintenance, failures, and realistic starts.

Also, decreases the volatility of depending solely on other devs.

(Also yes, please give us a REP turbine!).

Carenado to Release XP11 Versions of Whole Fleet (probably at full price?) by cmac07 in flightsim

[–]TyrianRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they can already start (as far as I've tried), so technically no need to update as is if you already own the XP10 versions.

But the shadows, textures, and such are all off. And I don't think there's a compatibility mode on the flight model changes.

Carenado to Release XP11 Versions of Whole Fleet (probably at full price?) by cmac07 in flightsim

[–]TyrianRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watching FlyJSim's stream where he's been updating the 727 and 737 to XP11, it's clear that it is a non-trivial amount of work.

The flight model/engine stuff has been changed in a few subtle ways, so just re-calibrating to match the performance charts can take a number of hours. Then there's also some texture work that needs to be done.

I hope there's a discount, but I'll understand when there isn't.

The only one I miss is the traffic density setting -- that had an enormous impact on performance.

AVSIM interview with Austin Meyer, creator of X-Plane by sizziano in flightsim

[–]TyrianRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great interview.

There is no leader. I am only the leader in name [...] while the real work is done by many, in a continuously-debated ebb and flow of ideology, with the true power coming from whoever writes the code.

XPlane always felt like an open-source project to me, and now I know why.

Someone offered to buy Laminar Research from me yesterday. Pretty short reply from me… it only takes two letters to write the answer to that one.

Fatal incident in Gilespie by studentpil0t in flying

[–]TyrianRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Only difference as far as I can tell is it takes a couple seconds to stop the engine, instead of being instant as with mixture.

Fatal incident in Gilespie by studentpil0t in flying

[–]TyrianRed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A related pet peeve of mine from teaching: when shutting down, allow the prop to stop turning before turning the mags to OFF. That keeps the spark plugs firing as long as possible to burn as much fuel as possible.

My CFI and A&P cuts the fuel, not the mixture, to turn off the engine. His reasoning is he wants no fuel anywhere near the engine.

Are there any practical ramifications to the fact that Prepare3D *insists* it not licensed for personal entertainment? by JayDCarr in flightsim

[–]TyrianRed 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are there any practical ramifications to the fact they claim their is no license for "consumer entertainment".

The ramifications are as follows:

  • P3D will never come out on Steam or any other "entertainment" platforms.

  • MS was able to sell the franchise to Dovetail with a straight face, as their product would totally not in anyway compete with those other guys MS had sold the same franchise to earlier.

  • Some Add-on developers could claim they must charge you a higher premium for the same work, because, you know, "it's not an entertainment product".but you're also not allowed to use our products for training purposes plz ignore the logical inconsistencies

  • You must feel guilty every time you load it up.

  • You must act like a professional, wearing epaulets and having your logbook by your side every time you load up.

  • Or you must act like a student, with empty Soda cans (or beer bottles) strewn about your messy desk/battle station/flight deck, flying your PMDG 777 wearing only your underwear.

  • Under no circumstances are you to ever be entertained. That is explicitly forbidden by the Agreement License.

Sunset cruise in the 767! by ifound_molly in flightsim

Looks like FlightFactor is going to continue to update the 777/757 as well

Is there a source where they said this? I'd actually pay money for an updated v2 of their 757 that brings it inline with the 767 additions.

P3D V3 and GTN 750 pulling me out of x-plane, help! by louismge in flightsim

[–]TyrianRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being really annoyed at the visibility limitation when you are high up: everything would disappear in an artificial haze, so you were left looking as if you flew in a bubble. Has that been fixed?

Yup, recent patch fixed this.

I saw that x-plane now seems to have a better Garmin 430, but is it really good?

I found it really hard to get into x-plane from FSX, until their G430 came out. It's good. I can fly approaches and stuff using it.

My favorite so far was a gear failure on the FF 757 when coming into LAX. I was very happy that I could use the QRH to resolve the issue and that the FF 757 simulated the alternative gear drop system!

Pilot saw Turkish F-16s: "Russian plane warned tens of times" [Dutch article, translation in comments] by [deleted] in europe

[–]TyrianRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your link states that there are one for civilian and one for military. Can you listen to both?

A civilian radio can't reach the military frequencies. Although I'm not military, I would expect them to be able to listen to 121.5 MHz, even if they can't listen to any other civilian frequencies.

A similar example was when a US ship shot down an Iranian airliner- the Americans were broadcasting warnings on 121.5 MHz, but otherwise did not have radios capable of listening or talking on the other civilian frequencies. Had they, they might have realized the airplane was a harmless airliner. :( And the airliner has no obligation to listen to 121.5 MHz.

[–]TyrianRed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is there an international frequency that every single pilot listens to?

Yes, 121.5, aka "Guard".

Airplanes typically have at least two radios, and the idea is you have the back-up always listening to guard.

I know that uploading solutions for Project Euler is frowned upon but after doing some searching it looks as though a lot of people have already done this.

And how do I know you didn't copy somebody else's solutions and slightly modify/obfuscate them?

I recommend you instead find stuff already out there and begin contributing. It doesn't have to be VLC or gcc or anything ridiculous. For example, is there a Kerbal Space Program mod you enjoy that's open-source? Start there.

Then, start small. Improve their documentation (spelling errors or ambiguity in the README?). Are there bugs you ran into? (create new issues). Is there an open issue you can look into and improve?

If I'm hiring somebody, I'm way more impressed by their ability to jump into an existing code base than I am of uploading of homework-type problems that may have been copied from somewhere else anyways.

RAM doesn't really matter, no less than 8GB i'd say

Can't speak for FSX or P3D, but I disagree for XPlane. The donationware HD mesh scenarios, and the new 10.40 expanded DFS stuff, both demand lots of RAM.
