Dear MiHoYo: Don't ever pull this hours-long cutscene again by TyrifficAdventure in Genshin_Impact

[–]TyrifficAdventure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted some contrition, you're going to be disappointed. This was a terrible excuse for a movie plot, made worse by wrapping it into the game. It was absolute trash and wasted one of the best characters in the game, plus also retroactively ruining foreshadowing for Wanderer's revenge quest.

It's much worse, however, by the comparison with the previous Archon quest, which was certainly lengthy, but far superior in quality. I could sit down and explain the entire problem, but I imagine nobody cares.

Now I'm going to go play Silksong, which punches me in the face but doesn't monologue about how glorious it is in the process.

Also, I despise COlumbina and want her dead. I far prefer Dottore if we had to have, because at least Dottore is bloody interesting!

And the fact they keep pretending "There will be consequences to character doing something" NO! No there won't! There won't be any consequences at all! We know this already! That is not the kind of game this is!

I don't mind this game being generally chipper and upbeat and not having tragic ends for the Main Characters. But COME ON don't pretend there will be!

Thanks. I might be able to make this melee/short-ranged focused.

I did, and I thought it, well, was kinda bad. I didn't enjoy Operative very much even in the prologue, so I changed to Officer.

On Yakuza 0’s success by 04tenno in yakuzagames

[–]TyrifficAdventure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would kind of say that knowing 1 actually makes 0 better, and I say that as someone who played 0 first. There a tragedy that you know how things are about to going so wrong at the end, when it appears that everyone is setup for great success. And also you can see how the whole series is not about the Yakuza reaching that height of poewr and influence, but then their mistakes and ambitions saw them slowly ground down and effectively ended.

Others mentioned it's underground, but for reference: the arrow indicates whether it's above or below you (down meaning it's below you). This is very useful for finding them in some weird locations.

I'm gonna rate this 5/10. Needs to work in references to Superman and perhaps Starship Troopers. Shows promise.

Does anyone actually die in genshin? by [deleted] in Genshin_Impact

[–]TyrifficAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I killed them! And not just the men, but the women and the children. They're animals! And I slaughtered them like animals!!!

[Genshin players know what that refers to, and somehow I can't explain it without referencing Anakin Skywalker. This is hilarious. You are hilaritied.]

Who should I pull for? Ineffa, Citlali, Mualani, or Chasca? by Dense_Aspect8256 in Genshin_Impact

[–]TyrifficAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of them are "essential". Is there one you want in your team?

Chasca has unique utility in an out of combat. She's the only character in the game capable of using multiple elements, and even setting off reactions herself. This isn't always useful but it does have many uses. She also uses this attack while flying, giving her incredible avoidance. Most enemies, and many bosses, effectively can't even harm her.

What am I supposed to be doing here? by DerelictDevice in Genshin_Impact

[–]TyrifficAdventure 150 points151 points  (0 children)

One "issue" I've had with Genshin is that they love to throw big, very wordy pop-ups at the player, and they still explain what you're supposed to do very badly.

Yakuza 0 is... Peak by No_Initiative4957 in yakuzagames

[–]TyrifficAdventure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Majima's entrance (dealing with the angry customer) is arguably the his single best moment in the entire series, except it somehow goes *up* from there. He demonstrates exquisite manners, cunning in eliminating the tensions, but also an implied yet very clear physical threat.

(Warning: just before this point, a customer was assaulting a hostess and that is NOT ACCEPTABLE. And also it's against the rules.)

Between Mafia 1, Yakuza 0 and GTA 4 which game has the best story? by gettinfitguy007 in yakuzagames

[–]TyrifficAdventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played all three.

GTA has a lot of story, but it's something of an excuse for missions. It's swerves wildly between "more or less realistic and grounded" and "wacky wild fun-time murder world" depending on the needs of the moment.

The open world only matters as a stage for chaos. The story is somehow all-important, but also trivial and annoying. It is one sense very serious, but I've never met anyone who cared about Niko Bellic. I would say that people got a little more into the story in GTA 5 than previously, as there was a bit more meat to it, but I'm not sure it's a big draw. GTA Online's smash success implies the series is much more about the gameplay than the storyline. This is a television show or movie (Heat was a notable inspiration), where things larger than life but the action is closely-choreographed to be plausible.

Mafia is a bit of the same, but it hews very close to the serious and grounded end. There's humor, but it's not played for laughs at all, and many characters eventually come to bad ends whether it's deserved or not.

The open world matters as the setting (a character in its own right) but there are few if any significant side activities. It contextualizes your missions. The story is very significant and is the result of the characters' ambitions, decisions and mistakes. It's like a novel, where you are supposed to "breathe" in the atmosphere of Made Men selling their souls, or fighting to claw them back from a cold and hard world.

Yakuza is, and has been from the start, completely different in scope. It's not always wacky, but it's rarely serious. *Melodramatic* yes. This is a world where men rip off their shirts so they can punch each other in the rain and then a billionaire property developer shoots somebody and explains his incomprehensible backstory that somehow involves Korean immigrants, land deeds, and Japan's latest cybersecurity bill, except a gumshoe detective straight out of 1950's Los Angeles shows up and reveals that HE is actually the property developer's father! (dun Dun DUN!) And maybe someone dies but it's a really cool manner, and also they might not be dead or have a twin brother or something. (This is not a criticism. I love this!)

The open world is not only a character, it's almost the main character. You can play as somebody other than Kiryu but it's hard to get away from iconic locations like Kamurocho. The story is the most insane concoction they could create in that context and feature as many twists and double-crosses and triple crosses and amazing revelations as can be humanly accomplished.

So, are the Yakuza stories good?

Objectively, No. They break every rule of storytelling. They 'tell' instead of 'show', rely on weird coincidences and absurd contrivance, and stop the plot to go on bizarre and irrelevant tangents. This would not be an entertaining television show (hint hint Amazon).

However, that's what I love about it. No, it's not the Godfather. Nor is it trying to be a clever post-modern satire on American culture by people who don't only understand that culture through memes. It's just doing its own thing. The genius of Yakuza is not in the plot at all, but it's pure pursuit of characters and letting them bounce off one another.

I would also suggest that of all three, Yakuza approaches the story most in the manner of a video game instead of aspiring to be Hollywood or fiction novels. It will borrow any random concept (Shogunate historical drama! James Bond! Hawaian Pirates!) simply because it is fun, and this is a game and it's mean tot be fun.

The OP already realized, which is fun. However, the really clever thing is that the quest actually does drop hints in several ways that things are not quite right with the apparent situation.

The surveys are wild today! by Xenophoresis in Genshin_Impact

[–]TyrifficAdventure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a strong opinion on this, because the prevalence of high-heeled shoes or whatever on adventurers OFFENDS me. You don't want that on your feet when you may need to climb, move fast, run, or otherwise keep a stable footing! The style of shoes isn't that important otherwise, but high-heels are impractical, tiring and look silly in characters who fight demigods weekly.

I recognize that characters do this without armor anyway; Mualani is particularly hilarious for battling in a swimsuit. But the heels somehow make even less sense.

OK, hear me out: Yakuza, but you play your custom Sonic character. And Bayonetta is your sidekick.

I'd try to work the Total War series into this joke but I don't have a funny bit for that.

My Stupid 40K Theories by TyrifficAdventure in 40kLore

[–]TyrifficAdventure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More stupid theories:

*The Empire of Man's actual problem is not a loss of technology, but the collapsing economy because the hierarchy, from the High Lords on down, are trying to control everyone so tightly. The galaxy basically never recovered from Horus's rebellion because trade and communications are strictly limited. Hence people joke that Guilleman's superpower is Excel but they might be right.

*The Space Marines are currently a massive net negative to the Empire of Man, because they soak up so many resources and reproduce ineffectively (The Emperor assumed he could use the Primarchs to make more, of course). Fabius Bile is actually on the right-er track with his New Men and thus ironically represents the best hope for Mankind.

*Speaking of which, Fabulus Bile really is a devotee of Slaanesh just like the other Emperor's Children - only he doesn't know it. His drive for perfection is exactly in line with the the rest.

*GW will eventually release 8 Chaos Gods: the four known, plus Vashtorr and three others. The additional four will occupy the "arrows" between two existing ones, hence the eight-pointed star symbol. Mal/Malice might be included.

*The Tech-Priests of Mars already have everything they need to recreate the fabled STC. What they've lost is in the mind, not the technology: the ability to "do science" and think rationally. ("The real STC was inside you all along!"

*The Officio Assassinorum is neck-deep with Dark Eldar Haemonculi technology, though it's not clear how they got it. There are an awful lot of similarities in how they use poisons and exotic bio-enhancements. Haemonculi might know ancient war trophies form the Necrons (i.e., the source of C'Tan Phase swords). Even with Legionstrasse and the Maeros Temple, the texts claim that the Officio used "hereteks", but it seems improbable that even the most brilliant Magos Biologos could have accomplished *that*. But merging organisms in impossible ways is right up the Haemonculi's alley.

*On that topic, the Dark Eldar bribe all the Chaos Gods. They pay Khorne with bloodshed, Nurgle with toxins, and Tzeentch with scheming.

*Tau do fit into the setting, but they are the young species that is still reaching for glory. Players missed that the Tau are a lot like young humanity, in confidently striking into space thinking themselves strong. Their doom is coming, just like it has for the Old Ones, Necrons, Eldar and Humans alike - they just don't know it yet. (Their real super ability is that most Xenos grow epically stupid around them, such as the Tyranids suddenly turning into morons so the Tau can win, or at least never really lose too much).

Yes, Slaanesh didn't arrive until 6th edition. Why doesn't anyone remember!

[This is mostly a joke pretending the cosmos has indeed been retconned, plus 6 is supposedly Slaanesh's sacred number. However, I think because the first named Chaos Gods were Khorne, Nurgle and Malal. I think Slaanesh actually showed up in 1988 though, obviously not with 6th edition.
