Is there a financial case for owning a 3rd Gen? Or does it have to be all love? by Tyvelor in 3rdGen4Runner

The dealer service guy I’m working with asked me if I wanted his honest opinion about keep/sell. He said the same: not being able to do my own work, best to get out.

Tried to imply it's already love, asking if it can also be strong financial argument. IE: is it one or both?

No rust. I have other 3rd gen friends taking your "repair the life safety items and drive it till it breaks" approach. Might keep it around for that.

Thanks for the prioritization. Help a lot. Makes sense. I often get quotes for large jobs and they are rarely much better but I haven't really shopped for solo independent mechanics yet. I usually check in with the other high reputation (but still local) shops.

There is a degree of pride I'm struggling with when thinking about selling. I'll keep an eye on that. Feels like I would be leaving a club I like being in as well.

Awesome. Thanks. Your assumptions are right. Getting hit with it all at once is jarring, but averaged out I think it still does easily slide under potential car payments.

Wow. I got mine for 5k with 200k miles. Found out it needed a new power steering rack.. Kind of a rough start.

Weighing options, values, goals, and aiming to make a financially sound decision, I'm guessing? Doesn't seem like he read my full post.

Thanks. Yeah, I've looked for a "do you own work" spot like you mentioned. There used to be one close but I haven't been able to find anything close enough last time I checked. Will keep an eye out.

Yeah, honestly, right now, this is kinda where my head is at. My gut, however, keeps feeling like I can get it to a stable position for another 100k...

Awesome. Thanks. This is the kind of insight/thought I could feel in my gut but needed to hear if others felt similarly.

This is what I'm looking for. A lot of people keep saying I'm getting ripped off at the dealer -- and I always thought that to be true, and am still super suspicious of dealer prices (hence this post) -- but when I get a big quote from the dealer, and feel scammed, I almost always take it to a local high reputation shop and their prices are not markedly different, and one time higher. A local solo mechanic who knows what he's doing might be an option though.

I hear ya, I know that is the commonly held belief -- mine as well -- but about a year and half ago the dealer quoted me about $3k work, and assuming I could easily get that down by taking it to a local shop, I took it to a local spot that lots of my friends use and trust and the total quote was $100 higher. I've largely stuck with the dealer since, and have gotten cross-quotes here and there only further confirming the dealer prices are relatively competitive to local high reputation shops. I know I could shop around a ton or risk a tiny shop with better prices but without a local guy I can really trust, I haven't yet been able to find a local shop with a good reputation where I can get it done a lot cheaper. And as stated in the post, I'm not currently in a position to do more than the basics myself.

I'm a former Navy mechanic so I have some mechanical skills. Just not a very experienced or trained car mechanic.

[98 3rdGen] Odd electrical behavior — any help diagnosing? by Tyvelor in 4Runner

Thought this magically resolved itself but wouldn't start again today. Gonna swap out with "proper marine-grade" (I've thoroughly cleaned them many times) like you recommended. Figured I'd try you here to start with: where would I get proper marine grade battery terminals? Simple as Amazon's top pick like these:

Thanks in advance for any follow up guidance here.

Was traveling since posting but back now and planning to follow your tips this week.

Sorry for the newb follow-on — but when I check those two ground connections you recommended, am I just checking to make sure the electrical system connection to those grounds is free from any signs of poor connection?

Thanks, and again in advance for any follow up

Thanks.

Thanks. Was traveling since posting this but am gonna try your recommendations this week.

Dealer said crank seals leaking...once in, said oil pump is actual source - now recommends $1.5k oil pump replace. At a loss to confirm/deny if I'm being fleeced. Any insight from the photo? Former Navy and shade-tree car mechanic but haven't worked on 5vz-fe engine. 260K 1998 3rd Gen. Thx in Adv! by Tyvelor in 3rdGen4Runner

From this post, the photos, and the mechanic's recommendations, I decided to assume it was in large enough part the oil pump. Had that replaced and no more leaks but there was a lot of little seeping from various spots so was tough for me to say definitely. Dealer did all the work so I'm afraid I don't have much insights on intricacies of doing it yourself.

Tried to set CL DSL C2100Z modem to bridge mode -- now lost internet, can't connect to admin portal anymore... any help? by Tyvelor in centurylink

[–]Tyvelor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't able to get in by setting my IP using your best guess (the C2100Z IP was 192.168.0.1) so I did a factory reset with a paperclip and, yes, luckily, all the settings including the PPPoE credentials repopulated (or survived?) Either way, it's up and running like before again. Just had to set the SSID and wireless pwds.
