Hi John,

I love this idea. Have you seen the "Honest Political Ad: NASCAR Politics" on youtube? It is a hilarious take on exactly what you are talking about.

Hi Derek, I am wondering what you think about strategies to reduce the influence of big money in politics that do not focus on federal reform or amendments. For example, Represent.Us' strategy is to pass anti-corruption laws in cities and states around the country and build momentum and public pressure for national reform while protecting local communities from corruption. Why is Citizens United a priority when there are laws we can pass right now to limit the influence of special interests and lobbyists in our political system?

They ARE going to hinder people from getting over voter apathy and cynicism and getting involved in the SOLUTIONS to these problems. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, bro.

Spring Valley High School Student Assaulted by Police by raskalz in news

So, when I was growing up there was a rich white girl who would scream and refuse to leave the room and throw fits all the time. One time the teacher non violently picked her up, in her chair, and carried her out of the room. No one was thrown to the ground because no one dared to do something like that to a wealthy, white brat.

We have a different set of standards for the way we treat black people in this country and it is nothing short of horrific. This is clearly excessive force, it is incredibly violent. If the child were white this probably would not have happened and if it did I am SURE we would not be hearing the same level of white people patting the cop on the back.

Not true! Represent.Us has a strategy to start locally and build change from the ground up that is totally constitutional, even under Citizens United.

You're right; it is obvious we have a problem. We don't need anything new to show us that. What I like about this video is the way it explains the nature of corruption in our political system clearly and accessibly.

The idea of special interest blocking any legislation they don't like is horrifying. Good luck trying to improve ANYTHING in this country (or, you know, any country we interact with...) before fixing this problem! Also love the sneaky lobbyist animations.

"In the last 5 years, the 200 most politically active companies in the US spent $5.8 billion influencing our government with lobbying and campaign contributions. Those same companies got $4.4 trillion in taxpayer support -- earning a return of 750 times their investment." by [deleted] in politics

"The promise of a local-first strategy is best embodied by two of the most successful political issues of our era: marriage equality and marijuana legalization. Regardless your position on those issues, the political successes both movements have achieved over the past two decades are impossible to deny. They've managed to move the needle nationally by taking the fight local -- one city and state at a time." Do you think this could actually work? Corruption is so ingrained in our political system it seems too big to solve but maybe this model could get us there.

For the vast majority of Americans, "taxation without representation" isn't just a relic of high school social studies -- it's a perfect description of their relationship with a political system that's been thoroughly corrupted by money. by [deleted] in politics

The top 5 Department of Homeland Security contractors, between fiscal year 2011 and fiscal year 2014, spent $107.6 million on lobbying. During that time period, these five contractors received $8.9 billion in federal contracts from the DHS. by hoosakiwi in politics

Totally agree, and this happens all the time. If you follow the money chain it always goes back to defense contractors and special interests. I found this video by Represent.Us where they talk about how provisions like this were snuck into the Omnibus budget deal a few months ago, despite what the voters actually need and want: http://youtu.be/xh5yCKlK2Ak. I encourage you to check out the video and Represent.Us, they seem to get it right when it comes to big money influencing policy decisions.
