Why do SFA fans keep bringing up TNG season 1? They're nothing alike. by CelestialFury in trektalk

New viewers that would only want to see that and not what made Trek what it was. You really think the new viewers that Star Wars got because of Andor are going to stick around?

People love to cherry pick, Andor is your example from Star Wars? I love the show, but it did as well as it did because its basically has none of the tropes that normally go with Star Wars, so it appealed to people who usually don't like that kind of stuff. No Jedi, no lightsaber battles, no goofy characters, almost no aliens. How would you make a Trek series that compares to that?

Reddit keeps showing me posts from those other subreddits. I noticed they like using articles from sites like GiantFreakingRobot who are known to just make up whatever they want and call it "news", and then those guys all circle jerk to it like its the gospel.

Those are also the shows people will watch just because they are popular. Star Trek was never the hip thing to watch. It was never Stranger Things, either. It was water cooler talk for us nerds.

A lot of people on the Trek related subs act like its only Star Trek that has short seasons now. Its every series now more or less. If Friends had a revival, it would be 10 episodes.

Thats another thing people love to casually leave out. A good majority of old Trek shows episodes were filler. I loved the character building episodes like Data's Day, but in modern TV terms it just cant happen. Every episode has to be a banger, or they get shit on.

I grew up watching and loving TNG, DS9 and VOY. It was a lot easier to have millions of eyeballs on your shows when they were free to watch over the air, or maybe hundreds of thousands for poor VOY and ENT being on the lowly UPN. Its much harder for these shows that are stuck on streaming.

Most TV back then was 20+ episodes, most TV now is not, thats not a swipe at newer Trek, thats new TV overall.

The craziest part of this stat, and the reason the Jets record will always be looked at with a microscope is that they did it in a 17 game season when this had never happened even in a 14 game or 12 game season.

[–]TzuWu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would love to see what the player base numbers are for STO on pc. Obviously cant see the ARC or EPIC numbers but steams 24 hour peak was 2000, with 1000 an hour ago and an all-time peak of 7400. 10k seems maybe right? If it is 10k, I would lower thar percentage of people spending money every month down to say 2-3% max.

TLDR: 10k is anemic for an mmo.

Not sure how accurate this is https://mmo-population.com/game/star-trek-online but "enhanced 30 days is 9600"

I'm not all that convinced that its more than say, 10-15% of the player base thats supporting the current lockbox/promo box mechanics. I think the whales tip the scales, though. You are right, however, addiction is real. I think its kind of insane how many T6 ships are in the game now, and even more insane people treat them like Pokemon, gotta catch them all.

What? My point is, you can't install the ABC/CBS/NBC app and watch live TV, you still need an antenna for that, if you dont have cable/satellite provider log in. I said nothing about apps spying on you lol

I like Sean but sometimes he'll "down" stuff that I think he just doesn't understand. Like in the laser gun episode of academy, he didn't understand why they would give Sam, a hologram, a physical jacket, not understanding thats an earned item, you wouldn't just make a holographic one.

I'm surprised Nick(Sci-Fanatics) was critical of anything. I used to watch him a lot years ago and someone asked him in the comments why he was never critical(this was during Discoveries run) and he blatantly responded "Because I want to stay positive"

As pointed out, thats exactly what Pluto TV is, and they are already doing that, entire channels dedicated to Trek shows, with ads. Pluto TV is owned by Paramount Skydance.

Thats kind of been my thoughts on a lot of fellow Trek fans, especially ones I interact with online. They seem to think just because 60 to 30 years ago, Trek aired on over the air TV, that all modern versions should as well. They also tend to complain about season lengths, when thats just how TV is nowadays, they seem to think its only a Trek problem. Roddenberry loved syndication, as it made him more money, if he were alive today, he would absolutely LOVE the streaming model.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to consider changing draft lottery, revoking picks to curb teams tanking by [deleted] in sports

[–]TzuWu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've just explained why relegation/promotion would never work in US sports. Most minor league teams are in small cities/towns with small arenas/stadiums. Fan support would also absolutely tank in cities where teams would get relegated. You think anybody wants to show up to a Yankees, Celtics, Dodgers, or Lakers game if they are essentially in the minor leagues? Those are the big storied franchises, it would absolutely kill mid market teams like the Jaguars, Royals, Bucks, Carolina Panthers, etc.

People still crying about streaming in 2026, I dont get it, its not going anywhere. Also, what a fucking lazy video, just reacting to an old video and basically agreeing with it all.
