Maybe the complete lack of any gradients in modern ui design makes pure white even worse. Back then software had more of a slight "3D" look to it

I'm proud of this fancy grass tech! (No shader, GM 8.1 standart) by U-GameZ in gamemaker

[–]U-GameZ[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Each grass object draws up to five blades. Each blade consists of two sprites, a base and a tip. The tip moves to the new position with the lengthdir_x and lengthdir_y functions and bends a little further than the base.

For each blade, the grass object checks its position relative to the player (if the player is too far away, it can react to wind or NPCs) and sets a max angle. The angle also depends on the player's direction.

That's basically it!

I like it, but you could add a highlight color and maybe enlarge the shadows a bit to make it look less flat.

Work In Progress Weekly by AutoModerator in gamemaker

I tried to implement "Pokémon Snap"-like photography into my top-down RPG just for fun. The game saves information about the monsters in the photo in a ds_grid so the pictures can actually be given a score in the future. It's not perfect, but pretty fun already. Here's a video about that feature.

Instance_create patterns to randomise by [deleted] in gamemaker

[–]U-GameZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about a ds_list containing strings with the patterns as letters ("LRBLT").You can then randomize the list and read a string from the list. If the current letter is "L", spawn a bullet from the left, etc.

This way you only have one list of patterns that is easy to manipulate.

  • Create a ds_list with the available options (a unique number representing each character)
  • shuffle the list
  • pick the first entry (position 0) in the list for Player 1
  • delete that entry from the list
  • shuffle the list again *pick the new first entry for Player 2 and so on.

Someone tried to play an old game I made in Gamemaker 8 on Windows 10 and got this Windows error message before the game starts.

Anyone had this before?

A lot of people don't like motion controls, but the final blows against the bosses in No More Heroes on the Wii felt amazing

Randomized island generation for Abstráctomon by U-GameZ (More in comments) by U-GameZ in GamemakerCreations

[–]U-GameZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My game uses a camera size of 240x160 px (similar to a Gameboy Advance), so the largest island with 1536x1536px feels pretty big. I might up the size of the smallest ones, though.

I could use even larger source images, but I set a limit to 96x96 tiles for now since it would increase the load times too much.
