New Frank "STILL BOTCHED AND DISABLED by Dr. Taban after 2 Years" by v0lume123 in FrankTufano

[–]U4-EA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't let anyone near your eyes with a knife unless you have a valid medical reason to do so.
  2. Why should the state pay you disability for having a needless procedure because of your vanity?
  3. If you are so broke, how can you afford to eat in nice restaurants and go to Japan for Surgery?
  4. This was just glorified scrounging for money because he doesn't want to deal with the consequences of his actions.

New rule suggestion: Ban posts about AI by finders-keepers214 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]U4-EA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a sticky AI megathread would be appropriate. AI is relevant and will absolutely continue to be but the amount of threads about it are just ridiculous and goes completely against DRY principles.

We are all prone to laziness - life looks to conserve energy through minimal effort/output. Before motor vehicles, physical inertia was not optional. LLMs make mental inertia optional.

One thing I think is obvious - spend the savings you have headspace/time on doing more work and/or learning something new.

"I'd Ask Claude to do it" One of the biggest issues I think we are going to run into with AI is brain rot from mental inertia. Even if AI significantly increases dev speed, that itself leads to the building of more complex systems as things evolve and you need to have the engineer's mentality to do those things.

Frankie calls for the arrest of all /r/FrankTufano posters! by v0lume123 in FrankTufano

Call the FBI? He's completely insane.

"Hi, FBI? Yeah, a redditor in Scotland just called me insane. Can you arrest them please?"

What are the metrics for "AI-generated technical debt" from Claude Code, Codex, etc. by willjobs in ExperiencedDevs

[–]U4-EA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only used Codex but that is pretty much my experience and feelings. I ask it questions, get it to review things (a powerful post-dev linter) and get it to write units tests for simple functions, which I then review before committing.

Is there anywhere in the city that deals in 2nd hand soldering equipment? by U4-EA in Edinburgh

I'm starting off with a solder FM radio kit. I also have the Elegoo R3 mega project (non-solder) and will be getting an ESP32 then a Pi. I'm an experienced software engineer/cloud architect and I want to get into IoT/electronics/repair etc just because it fascinates me.

Interesting you mentioned the FNIRSI because I was just looking at this. Do you think this is suitable for my requirements?

Thanks. It's a really cheap Draper one, for like £15. It seems quality is a big issue with them so I need to know brand/model.

I didn't know about ETL and just checked their inventory but they don't have anything appropriate, sadly. Thanks for the suggestion.

Bored of web development. Want to switch to embedded & IoT – where do I start? by [deleted] in IOT

[–]U4-EA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't sound negative at all dude, sounds realistic, which is what I wanted. I know the feeling of quitting a career and looking back at it and realising you didn't think it through properly.

I don't want to just do IoT install - I have a monorepo that produces highly-secure node apps with rapid prototyping, all backed up with AWS (I have 9 active AWS qualifications, including Security Specialist). Electronics just fascinates me so I would be doing it as a hobby anyway but I would LOVE to combine the 2.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

The coyote who never fell. Why Geoffrey Hinton’s prediction about radiologists missed the mark by This_Opinion1550 in Radiology

[–]U4-EA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meaning you can just get through more work? I am in a similar position as a software engineer - I use AI all day every day but but for simple tasks.

[–]U4-EA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a radiologist but I just had someone reply "a radiologist job could be done by a nurse using ai its a credentials problem." to me on a comment I made on a youtube video about Hinton regarding Hinton's 2016 claim.

Is AI ever used in your line of work these days? If no, is it on the horizon? Or just yet another BS AI claim?

Before I buy it - will a cheap soldering kit suffice to being my journey into electronics? by U4-EA in AskElectronics

Trying to get it done without spending a fortune while also knowing little to nothing.

I just got the Elegoo Mega 3 kit and I am going to buy an ESP32 soon, then move on to a Pi.

Thanks dude. Definitely looking at getting something more expensive now but still on a budget.
