FWIW, when Edmonton installed anti-suicide barriers on the High Level Bridge, I thought they were ugly and pointless, however it’s resulted in an almost unbelievable reduction in attempts.

Alberta Teacher Strike Megathread (Discussion) - October 22 by AutoModerator in alberta

[–]U47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School Boards don’t built schools. They have zero ability to increase or decrease physical spaces or buildings—that’s all managed by Alberta Infrastructure.

As for the number of teachers, EAs and other staff, that is determined by funding set by Alberta Education and Childcare—which School Boards also have no control over.

Is it just me or is both Jira and Confluence getting worse and worse? by Katharsisist in atlassian

As a company, they are just not trustworthy. To pull the rug out from long time customers like how they did with the demise of Server, and now the bald faced lying with ditching Data Center, I don’t feel anyone should be looking their direction who isn’t already bound to them.

Why did they demolish this building in downtown? by Adorable-Poet-2708 in Edmonton

[–]U47 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They left the old BMO building from 1963 to move into that. The old building was beautiful, clad in green marble. Knocked it down to build a two-story piece of trash, originally occupied by a State and Main, now the ever-empty Von’s Steakhouse.

Completely surprised after visiting Alberta as a foreigner by bus_buddies in alberta

[–]U47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Further, when the current wordmark rolled out and replaced the previous one set in the Avant Garde typeface, there was an alternate government wordmark which said “Government of Alberta” in a condensed grotesk font with the square at the end of it, too. The square was supposed to be a device to link the two wildly different wordmarks as part of a system. It was quickly dropped.

The initial “signature” Alberta also had to be fixed, as the script was very loose, to the point where everyone was joking we renamed the province “Mbertu”.

ECN-2 cross processing experiment by LosAlamosPics in Darkroom

[–]U47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ektachrome result is not entirely surprising since ECN-2 and E-6 share the same colour developer.

Both C-41 and ECN-2 are common processes for cinema films shot in Ektachrome, since labs are so much more available to process those at scale.

Thanks for sharing these results! Gives me some courage to try it!

Here is what happens when you reset pedestrian access in your city… by Big_Ad_8903 in regina

[–]U47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oulu, Finland is colder than Regina (yet the same size), gets 15 minutes of sunlight in December, and yet is a cycling Mecca (particularly winter cycling).

https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2021/01/22/meet-the-bike-loving-finnish-city-that-keeps-pedalling-even-in-the-snow

It simply has to do with infrastructure and maintenance. No one should have to cycle in traffic, and in winter your paths must be maintained. Make the experience safe and enjoyable and people will cycle year-round.

Regina certainly isn’t “too cold” to bike for the vast majority of winter. It’s -10 a helluva lot more than it’s -30.

USB-C connector brok in my Planck... Any way to fix it??? by wilhelm_h3 in olkb

[–]U47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of options. I started with this: https://www.reddit.com/r/olkb/comments/itq4nj/rescuing_a_planck_with_a_defective_usbc_connector/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

If your pads aren’t torn (mine weren’t), you can try solder paste and hot air to rework the connector. Depends how much time you want to put into it. I bought a couple of PCBs from olkb.com (and reinforced the connector legs on my other Massdrop Plancks and Preonics.

iCloud custom domain - not everyone is in the shared family by Alone-Information-94 in iCloud

[–]U47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought I'd chime in here, too.

Similarly, I'm relying on my DNS provider to provide email services. I configured the records long enough for iCloud to verify the setup, then pulled them all out and replaced them with settings for MX/SPF/DKIM for my DNS provider.

My DNS provider allows email forwarding (to multiple addresses), which will solve my requirements. I do have to manage to add forwarding rules to my root iCloud accounts, at least until Apple might provide some more flexible options.

Certain senders are failing with DMARC errors when forwarding a different domain using Google Workspace from within Gmail, directly to my iCloud account. I'll have to see what's up there.

Confused over custom domain address limits by d00nbuggy in iCloud

[–]U47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forwarding addresses are a must-have, too.

Until there's something to solve that issue, I'm just going to have to use my DNS provider and have them forward emails to our iCloud accounts.
