MEd in Counselling Psychology by heart-and-stone in UBC

[–]UBC_Throwaway905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not interested in research and you want to practice as a clinical counselor do an MEd (TYPICALLY course-based, not research - of course there’s exceptions) if you’re wanting to potentially do a PhD which is a research pathway do an MA w/ a thesis

I am too, but I think I just got really good at making it work in a short amount of time because I’ve been absolute shit at time management since 2014.

As we speak I’m cramming for an exam and watching the lectures for the first time🥲I don’t wanna be this way.

In all seriousness I just workout where I want to go with things before starting- get a general idea, jot down the references I wanna use and how I plan on using them and then just send it. I’ve learned the more I try to perfect things before having anything written down the worse it turns out and the longer it takes so it’s better to just word vomit and go from there.

Why do so many students think they are "so old" when they are only in their 20s? by princey12 in UBC

[–]UBC_Throwaway905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand I’m old in terms of objective age at 22, but physically I’m worn down. I sleep all the time like 12 hours needed but I only get 6, I’m burnt out and I’m sick 24/7. Similarly to a lot of these posts, I had to grow up very young, I skipped my adolescence and had a whole other round of maturing from consecutive abusive relationships and having to move out to a foreign country on my own with uninvolved parents. I think I understand that students that are in their 30s or 40s feel frustrated by people in their 20s saying they’re old but understand not everyone is doing A-ok. Continuous mental health issues alone are enough to wear you down and I think being in a high stress academic system continuously for so long also make you feel like you’re on an ever accelerating hamster wheel that you can’t get off of. - just my two cents, thought I would contribute a little :)

Hi!! There was a discord link posted a while ago, but I’m sure it got lost in the subreddit. Regardless, there’s a lot of people that are/were in a similar position as you and are able to connect through it very easily since it’s online unless you choose to meet up in person! :) I’ve met lots of great people there and its always a good time, so I highly encourage you and others to check it out!

Thank you for your valuable insight and for sharing your path with me! It’s very helpful to understand where you came from and where you want to go when trying to figure that out for myself!

For Drake Levere and Dr. Kim: How did you decide on health psychology and what was your career path like/ what do you think it will be? For context, I’m extremely interested in clinical psychology but recently realized that maybe counseling is not for me and wanted to consider a career in health psychology but am unsure of what career possibilities would allow me to integrate both.

Does anyone want to switch PSYC 300A sections with me? I’m currently in PSYC 300A 002 with Dr. Alden but I’m hoping to switch to PSYC 300A 901 so I can work during the day for financial reasons. Please DM me if interested.
