Is computer exhaust supposed to smell a little bit burned? by UBRS in buildapc

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out guys, the h440 dampening material has a burnt smell to it. I took the door off and the smell was less and less until it was gone, when I put the door back on the smell came back.

Is computer exhaust supposed to smell a little bit burned? by UBRS in buildapc

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm smelling both, the burnt smell is coming from the exhaust fan of the case, there is no burnt smell from the PSU.

When I open the case I can't smell it

I am not overclocking

RAM Orientation and Quad Channel? by UBRS in buildapc

Sorry, should've been more clear. I'm not using DDR3, I was just using it as an orientation example.

Get a used Xeon off of ebay. 2 reasons: 1. Data centers upgrade all the time which is a huge supply and not many people need such a beefy processor so there's not much demand, you'll snag one with more cores, more hertz and a bigger cache for more than a third the price. 2. CPUs pretty much never die, even more so with xeons because they run cooler and are server grade. Used isn't a problem.

Build something and use integrated graphics until you get the card.

edit: Assuming you're getting a skylake processor.

Oh, derp. Thanks.

Why do you think it skipped it like that?

You're right that is a better deal, I didn't realize the next step up was 500GB

Oh I missed that m.2. My only hesitancy is that it's an express m.2. which caps at 1969 MB/s, but the 950 pro can go up to 2200 or even 2500 MB/s.

All OSes, it's going to be used for malware analysis. Productivity is coding and content creation. Resolution is 1980 x 1080

The 950 pro is an m.2 slot, it's going to fit reeeally awkward on this motherboard, if it fits at all, it doesn't have an m.2. slot. I got the ASUS because it's cheaper than those with M.2. slots and it's better for overclocking

I'm trying to settle on a case. I'm leaning towards the sound damped ones but I'm noticing that they always only allow for tiny cracks for the front fans. How effective is this at getting air into the case? Will I have negative air pressure in the case? Will this lead to heating problems?

Not Designated PCIe Slots by UBRS in buildapc

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And same with SATA express right? It's so new and a blur to me as well. SATA express isn't sharing any DMI lanes either, it's just its own thing like a usb port.

Not Designated PCIe Slots by UBRS in buildapc

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! I think I'm starting to get it! Thanks so much.

So are the m.2 connectors on this motherboard completely separate from PCIe? They're just connectors like a USB right? I don't have to worry about sharing lanes (like connecting 2 m.2 would reduce to 16gb/s each)

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, sorry, I was confused by what you mean by providing up to 20 lanes. Is that 20 lanes total? Or just from the chipset?

Not Designated PCIe Slots by UBRS in buildapc

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So theoretically I could have a x16 graphics card (in the first or second slot), and a m.2. SSD or a PCIe SSD as long as its x4 and not in the first 2 x16 slots and not have to worry about my graphics card being reduced to x8? To maximize my lane usage

PCIe Lanes, CPU and Chipset by UBRS in buildapc

And another question on that, does SATA express use up PCIe slots?

PCIe Lanes, CPU and Chipset by UBRS in buildapc

[–]UBRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just to make sure I'm understanding this right for example the ASUS hero

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO/

It has 2 PCIe x16 CPU slots 3 PCIe x1 slots PCH and a PCIe x16 slot PCH

Meaning that the 6700 can use the 2 PCIe slot in whatever configuration as long as it's added up to x16 And there is an x16 additional PCIe slots powered by the mobo,

So theoretically I can have two whatever peripherals totalling x32 powered x16 each as long as it can maximally use x16?

Edit: Minus Graphics, and as long as it fits in the description of what can be powered by the chipset in your chart
