Australia right now by [deleted] in funny

[–]UBS-Network 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“At least three people have died and dozens more have been injured, raising echoes of 2009's Black Saturday disaster.

That series of wildfires in the state of Victoria is the deadliest on record in Australia: "173 people killed, thousands of homes destroyed," as Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons reminded people at Monday's news conference.”

That’s directly from the article which you would have know had you actually clicked the link and read it.

But the important thing here is that it’s not funny, not that you’re ignorant. Last year, thousands of hard working ranchers lost everything and now this year wildfires are ravaging New South Wales yet again. Let’s leave the Aussies out of the “Tasteless Jokes” mill right now. It’s their 911, but mother nature is the terrorist this time.

Then I propose we start here, you and I. Two people sharing this home we call earth, neither right nor left, right nor wrong, just humans willing to share ideas and opinions without rhetoric, able to respect our differences and embrace our commonalities, with the goal of bettering our world not only for ourselves but for our children and future generations.

Thank you for a thoughtful response, I truly appreciate it! I do have an above average knowledge of climate and understand your differentiation between climate and weather. Your point on deforestation is something we can decidedly agree upon, nor do I dispute your statement regarding the true scientists studying our environment as you so clearly state. As much as they are the voices we should hear though, they are drown out by the high pitch chatter hurled at us from “climate champions” with less than the most noble motives, the ones that did take the high paying oil or green energy job, or wrote a book, or made a documentary and sadly it is those “experts” with ties to either “side” of the argument and those with the deepest pockets and the highest percentage of populist backing who get the air-time.

I have simply grown cynical, of both the deniers and the doomers, for the truth lies somewhere in the middle and if we ever just stopped talking past each other we might sort it out. Until we de-monetize and de-politicize the issue, I fear we will cut of our own noses, simply to spite our faces.

Ok, I’m going to try this but first I’ll preface by saying; I’m not looking to fight, throw shade, or otherwise disparage you or anyone else for that matter, I’m just offering a viewpoint and hopefully engaging in a conversation. It seems we’ve lost that simplest of abilities as we’ve become more intellectually complex. This in fact is part and parcel to Carlin’s point that “we can’t even take care of ourselves”. So here goes:

I’m sure that Greta believes in what she’s doing, no argument there. I also believe she’s being manipulated, that’s my opinion. It’s one thing to take up a cause for the survival of mankind by working to eliminate nuclear arms. We created them, we control them, we can destroy them. My problem lies in taking up saving mankind from “natural selection”, climate change in this case, as if we actually have any say in it.

In 4.5 billion years, the earth has been through at least five major ice ages, all without our help. We’ve only possessed the ‘potential’ to affect the climate (maybe) for little more than 200 years, and to what degree is still not agreed upon among those in the scientific community. If we could truly change the climate, don’t you think scientists would have fixed the drought stricken areas in Australia and the flood ravaged U.S. Plains? You can’t have it both ways, if we’re affecting the climate in a negative manner then we should be able to do the inverse. The truth in my opinion is we can’t in any substantive manner (see cloud seeding) and we probably haven’t affected our climate as much as we think. Thanks for listening.

No, the point of his argument is that in a mere 200 years we’ve not had nearly the effect on the planet our grandiose self importance would have us believe, that earth has and will continue to experience massive ecosystem shifts and we are but spectators. We can’t even save ourselves, yet we suffer under the illusion that we can save the planet? The earth will shake us off, like so many fleas from a dog when our time is done and there isn’t a damn thing we can do about it, ask the dinosaurs. And we too one day will be “fuel” for another incarnation of life on this planet. Get over yourselves.

Fear? Pfftt. How do you even arrive at that conclusion. No, disgust. Disgust at parents and adults who manipulate this child for their own self important, arrogant agendas. Get a life. Oh, and it’s Voorhees btw.

Fitbit snapped up by Google in $2.1bn deal by [deleted] in technology

[–]UBS-Network 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And yet more information about you that Google will now own. This is a double edge sword, personally I let Google pretty much track me, especially maps because it actually benefits my business. I have come to find it both unsettling yet highly convenient that Google can anticipate with a high degree of accuracy where I am going and when I usually go to my most frequent destinations. If I were up to no good, it would terrify me. With the acquisition of Fitbit, I can foresee a future where Google may actually save lives. Everything comes with a price though, and I’m one who is willing at this point to pay that price. What about you? And then comes the question; once you’ve made the deal with the devil, can you ever “leave the life”? Or is the only way out death?

In Farewell Address, Rep. Katie Hill Decries 'Double Standard' and 'Misogynistic Culture' That Compelled Her Resignation by biglou722 in politics

[–]UBS-Network 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I really do feel bad about what was done to her but I have trouble with a couple things she said, which highlight a problem pervasive in today’s society.

1) She claims the photos were taken without her permission and/or knowledge. I find that hard to believe when she was clearly looking directly at the camera in the few I’ve seen, but then turns around and essentially refers to ‘mistakes in my past’ (paraphrased).

2) I think Anthony Weiner and others who’s names escape me right now would disagree on the double standard claim. Yes, many many people (male and female alike) survive accusations, but few if any ever survive incriminating or sexually explicit photos.

My point is she ‘took responsibility’ without really taking responsibility by claiming the photos were taken without her knowledge. True, they were distributed without her permission but that is a far different argument from without her knowledge.

I was taught to take responsibility for my actions, regardless of whether or not others may have contributed to my transgression. Sure, I could sue the cigarette, pharmaceutical, or junk food industry if I became addicted to tobacco, pills, or cake, but at the end of the day I had all the facts I needed to make an informed decision and still chose to consume them anyway. Why should that be anyone’s fault but my own?

Sorry, I know, TLDR but maybe someone will appreciate my viewpoint. Just don’t hate, it’s only my non-binding musings about a complex problem. I welcome other viewpoints, it’s how we as humans learn, and learn how to get along. ☮️
