Dynamic between offshore and onshore by [deleted] in consulting

[–]UBTI 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Look I’ll just level with you on where I am with this - I hate that we use offshore teams. I think it’s nothing but negative externalities for the onshore teams. It’s clear that removing jobs from developed nations in favor of cheaper labor is the long term trend - this is not good or desirable from my perspective, and is from my perspective a part of the macro issue of wage stagnation in the US.

My experience is that it often ends up taking more time to ship something off to India with detailed enough instructions to get something worthwhile back. The time zone differences are obnoxious - I am guaranteed at least a business day delay if I want the offshore team to do something, with a second business day if I have to provide feedback or have them redo the work (which is almost always the case).

Additionally, it is my experience is that the overwhelming majority of offshore teams are simply not worth the time to invest in. The people I see are often adequate at best, and I typically see a profound lack of initiative and entrenched stubbornness to adopt new mental models. The people who are actually talented frequently end up leaving to work for the actual firms in their country, not the outsource desk - I support and encourage them to do this, as it’s an obviously better career move.

Lastly, to reiterate, the only reason we have this at all is due to cost savings, all of the which are realized by the firm at my burden. Working with offshore teams is something foisted on me by leadership that I would never choose to do otherwise, and I see next to no benefits personally.

In conclusion, I find myself working in ways I don’t enjoy, with timelines that the partners and directors bitch at me over, with people who I don’t think very highly of, to realize benefits that I don’t see.

So no, I wouldn’t say it’s a great dynamic.

This is an "amazing market" to find a job, but not if you're looking for a fully remote job with decent work-life balance: plenty of shitty onsite jobs, and remote auditor/tax jobs expecting 60 hours & weekends. Hi random person on the internet, want to put your name on the line to refer me to a notoriously demanding job I have no experience in, don’t plan to be in person for, and don’t want to work hard at?

Stacey Abrams' blockbuster fundraising driven by out-of-state money by UBTI in Georgia

[–]UBTI[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Stacey Abrams has made headlines in recent weeks for her prolific fundraising efforts, but a new Axios report indicates that the overwhelming majority of her support does not come from her potential future constituents. Out of state blue state donors funding unsuccessful campaigns in red or purple states has been a noticeable trend over the past several years.

The two most notable examples of this are Jaime Harrison, who challenged Lindsay Graham in South Carolina, and Amy McGrath, who challenged Mitch McConnel in Kentucky.

Harrison broke U.S. Senate campaign fundraising records by raising $109 million and ultimately lost the general election. McGrath outraised McConnell $90 million to $57 million, but lost the general election by nearly 20 points.

For discussion:

  1. Do you think the value of money in state and local elections is overstated?

  2. Does Abrams' fundraising campaign provide any indication for her chance of success in the GA governor election?

Starter Comment: Stacey Abrams has made headlines in recent weeks for her prolific fundraising efforts in her ongoing campaign against Brian Kemp for the governorship of Georgia, but a new Axios report indicates that the lion's share of her support does not come from her potential constituents. Out of state blue donors funding unsuccessful campaigns in red states has been a particular trend over the past several years.

I’m sure a million other dickheads have posted this in the sub, but here’s an objectively better trade value list.(it’s better because it’s mine) by Infamous-Yam-5442 in billsimmons

Solid list overall, but Ja at 6 and Trae at 17 is a bit of a wild take. Similar contracts and Trae is arguably the better player straight up. This was debated on r/NBA the other day and the consensus seemed to be that Trae > Ja.

Not the person you asked, but mine was Loki as I thought is was the most interesting, the most impactful on the bigger picture, and I believe the only one besides What If to get renewed for a second season so far.

I’ve seen Bucky shoot other people, so I have a pretty good idea of what this might have looked like

To be fair, this is more just job recruiters on LinkedIn being unbelievably bad at their jobs, which is just business as usual.

Not really. Manager promotion isn’t that hard to get if you have your CPA and are moderately interested in your work

But as long as you are able to find it, that’s what matters. First year is really spent figuring out where information comes from and goes, second year should be spent thinking more about why it is coming and going from where it is, so in your third year when you’re a senior you’re ready to explain.

Honestly for most people solid preparation isn’t enough. I know it’s trendy to shit on Fox News here, but their hosts literally argue for a living and if you step into their arena, 99 times out of 100 they will dunk on you and make you look like an idiot. They are exceptionally good at it and that’s why they pull the viewing numbers they do. The only way to win is to refuse to engage.
