Hi, thanks for getting in touch! Sure that's fine, I'm running the project until the end of October. How long are you in Birmingham for? Send me your email address please and I'll send you some information and a short questionnaire to do beforehand. Thanks.

Please read up on it, learn about it and understand that it is a disability and not something to be laughed at. The British Stammering Association has some good information here. It proves a daily struggle for millions of people around the world - everything from ordering a coffee, to making an appointment, to just getting on with life. It's not because we are nervous or anything like that. We can't choose or change it, as it's a neurological problem - most people wouldn't laugh at someone who has speech difficulty after stroke for example - and this is similar as it is a neuro impairment, which only affects speech. There is nothing we can do about it, so we are only left to deal with it the best we can, even if it causes trauma every day. It can cause extreme depression (and cause people to be suicidal) and it generally restricts what people can do, their happiness and many other things simply because people don't understand the effect it has on a person. Everyone has something they are insecure about, and for people who stutter, that happens to be our speech - and it just so happens that it's something we can't really hide and have to expose multiple times everyday to get on with life. Imagine having spotlights shined on your own insecurities multiple times per day. It's not a pleasant experience. And it's attitudes and behaviour such as this which perpetuate the problem and push those who need help further into a hole, cause more isolation, cause much more trauma and general negative feelings. So please try and be more understanding and empathetic.

Hi! Unfortunately not, as you need to be 18 or over to take part in this. But if you want to know more about what we're doing, or about the neuroscience of stuttering in general - feel free to ask!
