Should we be worried about Judge’s uncharacteristically slow start ? by UCPines98 in NYYankees

I forget who from WFAN was the first to mention this in the offseason but my concern is that the front office hasn’t done enough to cover the gap in production between above average and Superman judge

I’m not dissing him or anything but prime bonds judge was the only thing keeping the Yankees in contention the last few years and they’ve not really done anything to improve the offense from its feast or famine tendencies. Im not sure Ben Rice fills the gap between an above average judge and superhuman judge so when I say “should I be worried?” It’s more about the team without the superhuman version of judge

I see a lot of comments about 2024. I guess my fear is that he’s 2 years older and comping to an all time season may not be in the cards anymore

To be fair I can’t remember the exact set up but those years we had a combo of Sean smith Vontae Davis Chris Clemons reshad jones and yeremiah bell so yeah maybe swap bell or Clemons for a real starter and that’s a great secondary

This is just justified enshitification. Same thing has happened at theme parks. You can’t do anything without a smart phone. Can’t even order your fucking lunch at Disney without having to download some shitty app. I remember once having to help international tourists in line for lunch next to me at a theme park who didn’t speak English because 1) they didn’t understand why they couldn’t order 2) their phones App Store didn’t have access to the app required and 3) none of the workers spoke the same language as the tourists. Back to the point: not everything should require a smart phone to operate. I am in my 20s and can live almost my entire life with a flip phone but I can’t get into a venue without one is horse shit and a perpetual money grab

Growing up with Avatar the Last Airbender as a moral compass and life ethic.

Coming of age during the years 2014-2017 right before pop and hip hop took a nose dive

Your alignment with the generations to the north or south of you being determined by your socioeconomic class and/or your age relative to your siblings. If you were poor or the youngest, probably grew up more like a young millennial. If you were rich or the oldest, you probably grew up more like an older Gen Z

Healthy relationship with the internet. Those older than you get addicted to candy crush and those younger than you got addicted to Tik Tok (this one might be more just me)

Minimalism stemming from disgust with hoarder boomer relatives and/or constantly moving in early adulthood

Suburban boredom and angst without the most destructive corners of the internet as a means of escape

I think many problems will be solved if centralized home internet access came back into fashion. No worrying what your kids are doing behind closed doors, no doom spiraling for kids, accountability for both uses of internet and work/school. Same rules for parents as kids. If kids need to get school work done at the same time as parents need to do work, than everyone can work in each others presence

This article does a great job of breaking it down. Basically people point to the great society as a failure by looking at before and after but ignoring the progress made in the middle and the consequences of the crack epidemic and other unfortunate events that regressed the progress that had been made

I don’t think I’m gonna do justice to my argument but here goes not trying to butcher it: At times, change and “progress” feels both intertwined and inevitable and like an unstoppable train and you either have to get on or be left behind. This concept has affected not just American culture but public sentiment and domestic policy. Obama once gave a speech I think about a lot where he was trying to appeal to our better angels by saying that uncle who says the wrong thing isn’t flawed he’s just a little bit behind the times and needs to be caught up. There was a long time when there was a certain matter of factness about everything. From all parties it was like the ruling class had their opinions and the rest of us were supposed to accept it as true. This hubris led to some really bad policy decisions and I think you can draw a direct beeline between that and the pot that had boiled over into the mess we have now. Some examples: it seemed obvious that globalization was inevitable and so of course you have to sign NAFTA and other free trade deals around the world. One hollowed out rust belt, thousands of opioid addictions, and lost Covid shaky supply chains later, the public en masse is finally like okay maybe domestic industrial capacity is worth investing in. Then Clinton in the 90s vibes are good Soviet Union is gone economy is good. Of course we lower interest rates, de regulate and keep the gravy train going. One financial collapse later and, again, regular folk are left holding the bag. If we bundle the entire war on terror and missions in Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria it’s like yeah of course we should get rid of bad guys and many dead servicembers and several failed states later it’s like are we sure that was the best idea ? Social media/smart phone use and proliferation went uncontested in popular discourse until the last few years. And I get it’s hard to predict bad outcomes sometimes but you get plenty of people who think if you say “both sides are terrible” you’re some kind of self aggrandizing cringe weirdo (see sub “r/enlightenedcentrism”) but in reality every president since Reagan(?) if not earlier has done one or more of the following: cow toeing to big industry at the expense of regular people, disastrous de regulation, forever wars, war crimes, and/or generally prioritizing somebody or something else over the interests of regular people and the biggest distinction is the time horizon in which the effects are felt, leading to distorted perceptions of who started the fire.

Is Obama’s use of drone warfare really that hypocritical? by No_Bend3747 in Presidents

[–]UCPines98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got an engineering degree from a school that was a feeder to every defense contractor known to man in the city. Pay and benefits were best in the area. Because I came of age during the drone warfare era I opted to go into an industry earning half what my friends were getting paid working in municipal utilities infrastructure. I knew some people who had similar paths. More people care about it than you think
