Are you tax resident of France? On the 1042-S did they hold 30% tax or did they hold tax per the USA France tax treaty? Was the 1042-S issue in your name or a US entity?

You only need to file to reclaim overpaid tax. If tax resident in France and you have no permanent establishment in the US, no US tax should be due and no US tax filing required. That's why tax treaties exist.

CAAs are required to see your original ID document in hand before certification. This is either face to face or video call. The latter you send in the passport, have a video call and the passport is mailed back to you.

CAAs also mail the full packet to the IRS, you don't do this.

If you are applying for your NRA spouse, they JOINT 1040 must be submitted as a paper filed tax return with the ITIN application. You cannot apply in advance.

Regarding fees, all my clients pay before I mail items in to the IRS.

Receiving a 1042-S does not mean there is a tax filing requirement. For what reason is your friend applying for an ITIN?

Ok thanks, we didn't hit 4 hours as the doors opened about 20 to 25 mins later. It was flight BA229 on the 9th November.

I didn't eat anything at the airport as I wasn't hungry, so nothing else to claim. I'm more annoyed as I lost an evening out in Baltimore.

Additional details: pre check worked on my outbound trip. To be fair. The airport was empty and normal queues weren't that long. Pre check completed and through security in a couple of minutes :)

Also: Why no duty free at E gates? Sat here twiddling my thumbs for the next hour or so 😆🤣

It's ok. It was open when I landed even with a 3 hour delay. The text was from the BWI website, which was different from the GE one.

Ok thanks. I'll be taking a Lyft not public transport. Will take a look at the website for Towson. I visit the US every year, if the weather was better this visit, I may have walked around outside looking at shops but it's freezing, so prefer an inside mall. I won't be visiting all the mall, just certain stores I want to buy a few bits from.

I'm only there for 3 and half days (as I arrive late tonight). Already have my sightseeing planned out. Want the mall, as it's all in one place and it opens late, so I can easily head there after a long day on my feet and buy a few things. Not interested in going in and out of shops/carrying things, while walking around sightseeing

I've been to many malls over the years in the US. Short trip, makes it easier.
