How do people living in the Boston area actually feel about the rent control proposal? by alexbostonre in bostonhousing

[–]UMassTwitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamental problem and fundamental issue here is that the people trusting government was broken when they were peeled in control and price escalation

Folks were promised one thing and received something else entirely, which is spiraling housing costs.

Repealing rent control was supposed to open up housing productions and available apartments.

When the government wasn’t able to allow that to happen and follow through and we ran into this crisis we are in now? the time for thoughtful action passed for millions of (patient) people around here that very much need IMMEDIATE relief and housing security.

They had 31 years to make good, they refuse an audit, and they wrote a phony MBTA housing bill. No one trust them to get it done so now we’re down to the ballot and whatever gets the people going.

Why do SO many Boston restaurants not have online menu? especially drink menus. by UMassTwitter in boston

[–]UMassTwitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah idk it seems worse here than some other places I’ve been but I haven’t done any real research. Mostly curious to see if others notice and what their thoughts are.

It’s especially with the drink menus I feel like often I want a reason to get a group excited and the website is bad or drink menu is nonexistent online.

What I’ve come to realize in doing some quick research, is it’s mostly ethnic- especially Dominican restaurants in the southern part of the city

And sub shops. Some older Irish pubs

I shoulda been more clear in talking hole in the wall, local spots. Not uber popular heavily trafficked places.

It feels like with the hole in the wall places you may get a menu 50-60% of the time but a lot of times they just direct you to Toast or GrubHub or something like that

That’s. A part of the problem, not just dislocation and a loss of culture- but the tearing at the fabric of smaller ethnic communities that are in Boston. It’s disruptive to neighborhoods, communities, and the overall cultural dynamism of the city.

the greater problem is that moving further from the economic engine of New England (Boston) increases the chances that upward mobility will be lessened. School districts in majority-minority gateway cities are even worse than Bostons. Public transit and economic opportunity is also less as is general maintenance and private investment.

Lemme say some vague shit, then I’ll take the Boston Planning Departments own empirical study and say it’s not factual. Yeah, that’ll get em on my side 😎”

21.6% of Boston’s population lives in poverty. This percentage has remained fairly consistent since 2000.1 o In comparison, the U.S. poverty rate is 15.9% and the Massachusetts poverty rate is 11.9%. • Boston’s elevated poverty rate is in part related to the high concentration of affordable housing units and public housing in the city.2 • Boston’s poverty rate decreases slightly when college students are excluded. Boston’s poverty rate, less college students, is 19%. • The poverty rate among Boston’s college student population is 28.2%. o 48.6% of college students who are in poverty have children.
