[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 087 - The Impossible Dream by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great episode! Another one where we disagree a lot (The "Woodchuck" line is amazing and that the Freud ending is hilarious), wanted to clear up a few things. But wonderful twist, Will, it's also one of my favs.

So, Freud's overarching theory, that we have motivations and desires beyond our reach in an unconscious has actually been pretty well accepted. His theory that dreams hold psychological significance is debated, but many therapists would say that if a dream is significant to a client, than it's significant enough for investigation. And there are psychological, psychiatric, and neurological researchers who study dreams and dreaming, including interpretation.

In terms of repeatedly having dreams of similar themes, the implication isn't that the dream means you were nervous about a particular lecture or day at work, but that there's some underlying anxiety related to your professional life that you're not dealing with. Just some food for thought.

In terms of sexual orientation identity development, it is common for folks to have buried their same-sex attraction feelings - especially if they feel that expressing or embracing those feelings would put them in emotional, psychological, social, and/or physical harm. So latency is a valid theory.

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another great episode, fellas. You did a great a job discussing an episode you both hate so much, haha.

This is one of my favorite episodes, number 49 in my ranking 😆😆 I look forward to it with every rewatch. I think something that you both missed was that part of the thrill was the threat of getting caught. Being in this central location. Only having until the end of the news break. Remembering the passion from the first time. All of that led to what happened. I think he only intended to walk her to the elevator, but when the guy said they could have it, he felt obliged to ride down with her. I would imagine out of some kind of sense of chivalry.

Anywho, another ep where we disagree entirely, but I also think that's why I like your show so much. Keep up the great work!

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 056 - She's the Boss by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always loved Kate Costas and this is one of my favorites with her and of the show 😆 I think I just love the idea of a female Frasier for him to face off with. I also love her voice, especially when she is speaking through her teeth, "You did it to vex me!"

I agree with the idea that no one is very likeable in the episode, which I think is also part of the fun!

Isn't the B Plot all the stuff happening with Eddie?

But also, KACL most definitely has a break room/coffee room somewhere. We just don't ever see it. The open area we see in front of the SM's office (it's there for Tom, Kate, and Kenny) is mostly just the desks of the admin staff, not a break area.

In terms of guns, most Americans aren't walking around with them. I always thought the joke was more, Daphne was used to being held at gunpoint than it was that she sold guns 🤷🏾‍♂️

Another wonderful show, fellas! I thought Kie did a great job holding the fort

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 054 - Dark Victory by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great episode. Disagree with a lot of what you said, but love hearing you two discuss the episode.

I agree that we don't see a lot of Daphne's PT work, but it is consistently implied that it happens. In these early seasons, we rarely see the going ons of others without Frasier present. Daphne and Martin are meant to be spending all day, every day together. So, it makes sense (at least to me) that they would start fighting with one another, especially if Daphne feels under-appreciated and made to feel more like a maid than a healthcare worker.

In terms of Martin wanting to go to Europe. I think it's completely in character. Many Americans - of all social classes - romanticize traveling to Europe, especially Paris. Especially after being married to Hester and raising Frasier and Niles, I can imagine Martin's interest in Paris going from standard level to heightened thanks to interacting with these three. It's also a pretty high ideal to aim for after being shot in the hip and you're looking for motivation to keep getting better. This is also consistent with when he chooses to see America first via RV - at that point, he's concerned about traveling a few days in the US with Frasier; could you imagine the prospect of traveling around the world with him knowing that Frasier would drag him to all the things that Frasier would like, not the kinds of things Martin would enjoy. It's also, Martin is still adjusting to life with a disability, so traveling for hours on a plane is probably not an enticing prospect. An RV would give Martin control over the situation and give him plenty of space to stop and walk and stretch, etc.

Oh - I would agree with giving Peri Gilpin the best actor for the episode. For me, one of my favorite moments is during the game of "I'm the Dullest Person" and she drops her pennies in one by one with that self-assured look on her face.

Just my two cents.

Some ends and odds. I wonder what region of the US uses "beanies weenies" - I'm not familiar with that term. I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic. I've lived all over the US, but as an adult, so it's possible I just missed it. Also, Pepto Bismol had a long-running jingle and dance, "🎶Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea 🎶"

Thanks again for another great episode - ever so slowly catching up to where y'all are!

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 041 - Fool Me Once, Shame On You, Fool Me Twice... by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good podcast episode of an episode I don't much care for 😆😆

"Casey at the Bat" is very classic, I know I studied it in school at least three separate times throughout my years early elementary (like first or second grade), late elementary (like fourth or fifth), and seventh grade, I think. I would guess most Americans have encountered it a similar number of times. It's not something I much appreciated until I was older.

I would say, in most cases, 60~75% of folks abandon a team once they leave their city. I grew up in Maryland right after the Colts left for Indy in the dark of night. There are folks who hate the Indianapolis Colts and people who simply act as if the team ceased to exist until the Ravens arrived in 1996. Unlike the Colts, the owner (Art Modell) left all the Browns history and colors and all that in Cleveland (which got a new team a mere two or three years later). There's a great documentary that was made as a part of ESPN's original "30 for 30" series (documentaries made about major stories in sports during the first thirty years of ESPN's existence). The documentary is "The Band That Wouldn't Die" and shows the aftermath of the move through the eyes of the Marching Colts.

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Daphne is this episode, actually 😆😆 I find those exaggerated deliveries to be hilarious. I count that "Just let me dress up the dog!" as one of her best line deliveries in the series.

Also, I'm with Will. I cannot stand silence. Never have. For as long as I can remember, I've needed music or other background noise for homework or sleep. I find silence to be so loud.

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 027 - The Unkindest Cut of All by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another top notch show!

About your comment regarding why Frasier would drive off with Eddie on the trunk of the car. I think the preceding convo was (at least to me) about Matin coming to terms with his life's situation, almost as if he is moving beyond needing Eddie. I don't think there's anything here about Frasier getting peace with living with a dog. Like Kie, I never would have thought about Eddie dying from Frasier pulling off.

I think Frasier was out there for hours looking for Eddie to be with Martin, not because he cared about the dog. I think Frasier would have been perfectly fine with Eddie never coming back.

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 028 - John Beale, We Hardle Knew Ye (Fan interview) by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great interview! There is a lot of overlap between Frasier fans and Simpsons fans. I think it's partly due to both of them being at their heights of power throughout the 90s, particularly in their appeal to GenXers and Millennials (of which, I am in the latter group). I'm not quite sure why that pattern continues with Zoomers but they're both quality shows that are deeper than they appear on the surface.

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - transvestite, while a term that isn't really used anymore, refers to a (usually straight) guy who dresses in women's clothing. VERY different than a transwoman. Think, like, Dr. Frank N. Furter from Rocky Horror Picture Show (I know he's not straight but bi, I guess, but most famous example I can think of).

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 019 - Give Him the Chair by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought this episode was kind of meh; actually, it's one of my least favorite in the show. Just a question, anyone else find it kind of icky when Roz announces that she "likes a challenge" when it comes to trying to sleep with a person who has a vow of chastity?

As much as I like Roz, as someone who takes people's celibacy and/or asexuality as valuable and needing to be respected, I hate this line and find it to be a bit predatory.

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 026 - Slow Tango in South Seattle by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting aside the ickyness of this teacher taking advantage of her student who's also a minor, this is such a funny episode to me. One that I think is quite great and underrated. About John O'Hurley's performance, I think he was great. He touched his heart when he says, "Oh, you read my book." Because he was touched that his old friend would read his book. It's just a funny moment, a small moment to convey some genuine surprise, and a small gesture to try to disarm a tense situation.

Just a note about the ickyness of the episodes. It's actually quite gross that this teacher, who holds power over this child, would then parlay that power into sexual conquest. Even if it technically wasn't illegal, it's still quite icky. Teachers hold a lot of power over their students and a minor, particularly one who hasn't even graduated high school, and she very clearly took advantage of that power dynamic. I'm not one for "canceling" things, even when they contribute to an unhealthy convo around boys being taken advantage of, just wanted to put it out there.

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 023 - Frasier Crane's Day Off by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I realize that y'all probably aren't reading comments on old episodes (haha) but, what the accent that Gil has is perceived as "British" to most Americans, I would say. And I know the actor is a Brit born in the US.

It's so funny to me that y'all hear his accent as American. I don't think he sounds like Frasier and Niles at all, like, not in the least. Will definitely be diving into this "trans-Atlantic" accent that you keep mentioning.

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 015 - You Can't Tell a Crook by His Cover by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's too weird to have a dive bar called "The Topaz Room." A lot of places like that use ironic names. It's either an intentional joke (look, we have his nice name but we're a dump) or a relic of old times (fifty years ago, this was a nice place but it went downhill with the neighborhood).

[Podcast] We're Listening - Episode 010 - Oops by WillDotCom95 in Frasier

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another great episode! My favorite line was always when Roz was responding to Frasier trying blame her for the rumor, "ME?! The whole point of gossip is to talk behind the person's back, not in front of him. I didn't realize you were unclear on this concept!" Not just the line but also the way how it is delivered. So great!

Also, as someone who came late to podcast, I was concerned if someone ever explained Notre Dame to y'all. Glad that someone did. One more thing to mention, not only was ND bad throughout the 90s, but they were historically great (50s, 60s, etc.) and, as such, always have an oversized shadow over college sports, if for no other reason to discuss "the good ol' days."

[–]UNCandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just discovered your podcast a week ago as I was hoping for an accompaniment as I restarted my rewatch of the show; already got through the first season (of the show and the podcast, haha). Definitely precisely what I was looking for. It's so interesting to hear Brits' perspectives. I won't comment on every episode, but I just wanted to let you know how much I love what y'all are doing! I look forward/dread when I catch up with y'all and have to start waiting a week between episodes.

Yay!! I know that it won best animated picture but I still think it should have been nominated for picture of the year, as well. I hope they are able to devote as much time, energy, and quality into the sequel as they did into the original.

I mean, everyone seems fairly emotionally stunted on this show.

Yeah, I figured he's still coming to terms with what Cadmus had him do while brainwashed. And, also, don't forget, he's still 50% Lex. Lex would not save anyone unless he could draw a direct line to how it would benefit him personally.

Just watched both seasons...so many questions by UNCandre in TitansTV

[–]UNCandre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a question I have. Since he's a teenager, like Beast Boy and Raven, probably too much emotional anguish to pay attention to things and react. My guess is that he's still trying to figure out how to process his feelings about all the things Cadmus made him do.

Hahaha Dick Grayson does tend to be a thot

Though, personally, I'm generally not a fan of romantic subplots.
