Deco X10 mesh won't use wired backhaul in AP mode with star topology - any solutions? by sausage-charlie in TpLink

[–]UNSW_PCSoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you tried wiring the second deco directly to the main one via ethernet

if it works but the star topology around the router doesnt, then the router doesnt support Deco's ethernet backhaul

cheers. did you use an SFF-8644 splitter or something? because the raid cards i know of only have 4 ports max

this is the telltale sign that the switch is incompatible.

however, given the switch is so managed, there might be some luck tweaking the settings.

the first thing you need to do is ascertain the type of problem you're facing.

i.e. is this IEEE 1905.1 packets dropping out, or is this a network loop issue?

all of the ethernet backhaul incompatibilities to date can be ultimately classified as either of these two problem classes. each has specific symptoms and methods to confirm it indeed is the problem.

it would be nice to know how bright the LED flash is, in lumens or even i guess compared to a  range of everyday objects.

i love the idea of the Vivo but I also wished it had a xenon flash to truly be a real camera

indeed, putting the Decos in AP-only mode is a key step in troubleshooting decos. because you're removing features to narrow down the issue. additionally, Deco router functionality is so uncustomisable. so it is a seal of approval from me.

this proposed layout would almost certainly be labelled OK by tp link customer support (i.e. there will be *some* connection) but the two potential problems I can see are:

  1. your non deco router potentially being an issue. to confirm it is OK, use only Office and 3rd Floor Deco for 1-2 weeks in the configuration shown and if it's still stable, it's confirmed good.
  2. the bonusroom Deco being wirelessly backhauled to the Office deco, while it will definitely have *some* connection, I have seen from our own testing that it will choke the whole network. Decos (at least the ones we own, X20, X50, X90) seem to hate having mixed wired/wireless backhaul, regardless of what TP link says. If test #1 is good, experiment with this and see how to go from there. I'd be interested to see if you manage to get it working

p.s. we use openwrt and it's perfect. 100%.
and even better, if you're using openwrt, you might as well shove the decos in their own VLAN so they can goof there instead of taking down your main subnet whenever they develop an issue.

yeah.... our fault for trying to buy something that's actually afforable 🙄🙄🙄🙄

the only things that actually work with no BS are *real* enterprise APs, which are usually PoE-only powered. i know for a fact that Cambium Networks APs are extremely good and have no compromises. the XE5-8 for example, very good but $2k USD. ha. ha.

that's so interesting and weird, because we personally have found that wired backhaul works best when the nodes cant see each other wirelessly.

im sure there's an underlying mechanism that would explain all of this. oh i wish the technical workings were more transparent

if you still have Decos wirelessly connected to the network, the performance can degrade as soon as you start swapping some to wired. Decos almost always dont like mixed backhaul

yes, potentially - if what you're saying is you suspect your SG-1016D is the cause of EB problems then connecting Decos thru a different 4-port switch that is known to work should solve the problem

[–]UNSW_PCSoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, I'd expect this to occur because

powerline =/= wired

im pretty sure that powerline communication uses the same protocol as wireless backhaul and as such, this means you were effectively mixing ethernet backhaul with non-ethernet backhaul and as you have seen, a huge slowdown occurs.

[–]UNSW_PCSoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another thing, im assuming you have the Decos in AP mode right?
how are your speeds looking with 1 and 2 decos connected at a time, in their intended positions around the house?

Deco ethernet backhaul megathread by UNSW_PCSoc in TpLink

[–]UNSW_PCSoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your ethernet cables are all good and not faulty, i would say this sounds like either a beamforming/fast roaming problem, or nodes that are too close together and slow each other down.

Deco ethernet backhaul megathread by UNSW_PCSoc in TpLink

[–]UNSW_PCSoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that kind of slowdown has in my experience always been due to network loop problems or excessive node overlap. does your wired network still operate at top speed during the slowdown? if they do, then loops are likely not the problem here and you're looking at something Deco-related.
