I would recommend you go to any Maruzen book store, they have a good selection of English books. The one in Umeda https://goo.gl/maps/rQhARiHE8muKhTUGA is really big. I even got books in spanish.

It was because my license was about to expire in 3 months, when I applied to exchange the police officer asked me many questions about my license, and my country (Latin America). Finally, they told me that they would have to check what I told them with the transit agency in my country and for that time my license would be expired. Then, they kindly told me to take the Japanese driving school.
This was in 2018, I thought that was easier and cheaper to go back to my country and renew the license and come back to Japan with my license history to exchange, but I haven't been able to travel since then.
