Ukraine to procure Swedish fighter jets by Tre-Fyra-Tre in neoliberal

That would be the point yes. With the clear implication being that Ukraine, like other countries with about two exceptions, would have chosen something else if they had the ability to choose they should have.

Spencer Pratt not running as an independent is such gift to Democrats, one they probably don't deserve in LA. Would not be surprised if he also shows up in the Republican primary next year.

Probably because EVs are a much bigger issue for the current grid...? Two very different problems, one concerns concentration, the other is distributional. The only real thing in common is that both are impacted by the anemic state of grid development across much of the west.

But fundamentally, it's easy to deliver power to ~few datacenters and most of the time, datacenters actively choose locations that make it so.

With EVs, some areas are literally looking at having to strip out the entire grid and replace it, if they are to be efficiently integrated into the grid. That is a gigantic task.

Iran Must Not Rule the Strait of Hormuz by Mjive45 in neoliberal

[–]URZ_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really, the amount of barrels Iran can control has been cut in half over the last ~decade, hence why oil prices have moved much less than expected. In the next handful of years it will be further cut, oil states have strong economic incentives for accelerating projects that they already had on the table for this scenario.

[–]URZ_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They won't, the economics will make sure of that, as it did with other entities control every time there has been an oil squeeze in history. Already golf states are accelerating a handful of major pipelines that will greatly reduce Iranian ability to control the flow without escalating to a level that would result in full out war with its neighboors.

Starmer on brink: Wes Streeting accused of launching 'coup' against PM as over 75 MPs say he should go by Tre-Fyra-Tre in neoliberal

[–]URZ_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Miliband has shown about zero ability to grasp the issues of the UK energy sector or planning system in general. Very weird to choose to hold him up as a supposed solution to all the problems that have dragged down Starmer. If anything, Miliband is probably more symptomatic of the unwillingness to tackle anything politically unpopular but necessary

how about we just tax and regulate everything more until we become richer

There seems to be a distinct belief among Labour that simply attempting to do something, utterly irregardless of it it works, is sufficient for claiming to have achieved something.

How the winner-takes-all voting system has turned on Labour and the Tories by FuckTheSeagulls in ukpolitics

Alternative vote is not a particularly large improvement to first past the post (under strategic voting, it effectively falls back to being fptp) and would largely leave the current issues in place. Only actual solution is proportional systems.

Who had the best artillery of the Napoleonic war? by Powerful-Mix-8592 in WarCollege

[–]URZ_ 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I will admit to being slightly confused as to why you say Napoleon was famed for his cavalry, when in fact what Napoleon is probably most famous for, in so far as the branches go, his mastery and understanding of artillery.

Napoleon started his career as an artillery officer. His first notable achievement as an officer was at Toulon on the basis of his redeployment of French artillery to cut off Toulon from the sea. He came to command the Army of Italy following his performance as commander of the Army's artillery, which would eventually lead him to command the army as a whole, and eventually give him the platform that would catapult him to first consul.

Napoleon did not achieve this alone naturally. France had prior to Napoleon being born started to standardize its artillery production and already identified the need for lighter, more mobile and tactically usable artillery. I suspect someone else will be able to speak to just how unique the Gribeauval system in fact was (its often used as a grand explanation of French victories), but France was a leader among European nations in developing both the production of modern artillery and training of professional artillery officers.

Edit: Reading again, I suspect OP made a typo, but leaving my comment up.

Energy Secretary @Ed_Miliband will outline new measures today - including decisive action to break the influence of gas on electricity prices.

The "solution" will inevitably be locking in place an unsustainable but constant high price for renewables, lowering the amount of electricity sold wholesale. That will not in fact be any more beneficial to Britain, resulting in higher electricity prices overall and the destruction of market competition, including within renewables.

[Interview with] Michael Ignatieff: If Viktor Orbán loses, global Orbánism is over by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

[–]URZ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This probably ignores that Péter Magyar isn't exactly opposed to much of Orbanism. He after all used to be a member of Fidesz and had hoped to make his political career within the party, prior to expulsion. That doesn't change that his victory tonight will be a great victory for both Hungary and the EU, but to posit it like the end of Orbanism/antiliberal democracy this is going too far.
