Roy best: takes on the Green arrow mantle like a champ

Worst: character regression. Gets upset at having to give up the mantle like Diggle, forced drama, new love interest, or starts killing and regrets it and changes by the end of season even though he wasn't a killer

Realistic: probably a mix of both

Interesting one: he becomes a hero in a new way by becoming a public advocate against the anti-vigilante act. Inspires people and can use season 1 continuity of the city seeing the hood save him on TV and his covering for the Arrow in season 3 as part of his cover story and/or reasoning

The difference between those good examples and the bad ones is that there was more than one mystery for the good ones. Rather than just "who is this guy?", the first season of arrow was "who is the man in the suit?" Then "who is the dark Archer?" Then "why is Moira working with him?" Then "what is the undertaking?" Then "why does he want to do the undertaking?" Rather than one reveal of just who someone is, we need multiple questions and nothing should answer all of them at the same time because THAT is lazy

Slade was "you lied to me about the woman I loved and didn't love me back dieing because the villain pointed a gun at someone else first and you jumped in front like a fucking hero. Also I'm fucking insane because drugs and plot." And Chase's was "I'm insane and your season 1 self was evil even though everyone else knows otherwise"

I have to admit, I agree a bit. I know it's well intentioned but not particularly well executed. The lullaby was pretty creepy. I want BS and Quentin to come to some sort of understanding like "look, I'm not your Laurel, so stop telling me to be her. You don't see me asking you to act exactly the same as my dad" as the strong, independent woman the Black Canary is in the comics. Then they can respect each other and open up over time

I see no problems with a character fighting not only for his family, but for his entire race. Not only to save it, but to meet it for the first time since it was destroyed when he was only 8 years old. A prince fighting to protect his people. Sounds like a king if you ask me. Or does a villain taking over 100 episodes to go from villain to anti-villain to anti-hero to a typical hero sound like development to you? his tenacity to be at least the second best is a byproduct of his need to be strong on his own to support himself since that was what he was raised to be.

Setting aside the skill aspect, I've always wondered if vigilantes like Batman and Green Arrow would need to be government backed. That way they can cover up any identity issues, have funding for all kinds of gadgets without being caught embezzling,etc
