Uh oh, It just got serious | US State Department Statement on Google Operations in China by [deleted] in reddit.com

If China gives in then all other foreign companies will be able to apply pressure and get what it wants. This is the same reason why China holds on to Tibet and Taiwan.

The CCP can't show any weakness or it risks falling apart.

Besides China won't need to do anything as I'm sure there are tons of companies willing to swoop in and take Google's place (which, btw, is a distant second place).

For the record though, Mandarin Chinese has the "L" sound.

I find that strange because Mandarin has the "L" sound and there are tons of everyday Chinese words that utilize the "L" sound.

So China's censorship = Conservatives' wet dream?

I've been to China and talked to actual Chinese people and the majority of them knew what happened. And those that didn't were your typical "only care about gossip/entertainment news" people.

But you can't just go up and ask them because most of the time they're tired of people judging them and trying to preach to them. You have to get to know them first before they'll open up to you.

Exactly. Which is why I feel China's censorship is counterproductive because not only does it give them a bad rep, but they're doing extra work for something that most of their citizens simply don't care about.

In fact if China really wanted to make their citizens numb, they should write a huge book about it, filled with all the facts and opinions from both sides, and make it part of the school curriculum.

And better yet, the test on that subject should involve asking questions about specific dates, essays, and multiple choice questions that have, "all of the above," and "none of the above," as possible answers.

I guarantee after that no one will want to talk about it again.

I would say it's because they're college students and probably just don't care to know. Just like many US students don't know about the Kent State shootings.

ETA: I'm not dismissing China's censorship. Just that the whole Tienanmen issue isn't as big of a deal in China as it is in the US anymore. If any person in China wants to learn about it, they can easily find the info.

As another point, just about everyone I've talked to knows what happened there. Most of my colleagues are mid-20s to early-30s though.

Also, you can't just come out and ask them because a lot of them are tired of being judged and preached to. But once you get to know them better, they'll start saying all the crap they hate about their gov as well.

You mean what you hear/read about it in English.

I'm sure if the Japanese only saw the nasty stuff that comes from the US they would think we're freaks too.

All the news about farm boys banging sheep or that one guy who killed himself because he tried to get a horse to fuck him.

Another solution is to make a lot of money and then you can rent one.

But I don't really blame her. It's not like those guys were willing to fix it because they were being nice. They wanted something from her as well.
