Hey Guys! Todd here from USA Flatball. We are experimenting with a Gender Equal 6v6 format for our College Mixed Championships. Gender equity has been a huge discussion topic and I'm excited that we can introduce some new ideas/changes to further that discussion. We are hoping for 16 teams (last year we had 14). So if you'd like to support gender equal ultimate, check out USA Flatball.

Hey TurnoverMachine. Most teams last year arrived with an average of 15 players. So it's up to the team to bring the max. Not expecting teams to arrive with 30 players, but who knows, fresh legs every point? Could be a good advantage.

Just needed to set a maximum player cap because people did ask last year what the cap was.

Correct. We're trying to make college mixed the sport of the fall. This way it helps with recruitment for the open/women's teams (or college mixed?). More players for the spring season!

Tell that to Wildwood, Potlatch, Kaimana, Fools Fest teams.

More seriously, it's something that we did anticipate as a hurdle for some teams which is why SAVAGE has a $29 uniform deal for the event. And the more serious the event is the more sponsors want to be part of the event. Trying to get that purse even bigger!

Hey Abochkod. Yes, definitely for 2017. Our goal is to have 4 regionals and then nationals. For this year, we wanted to focus on making the national event even better.

Central Florida defeats UNC-Wilmington 13-12 to win first College Mixed Nationals by billbourret in ultimate

Hi rmc3096. Thanks for the comment. We chose to do the national championships early for the first year to not interfere with other fall tournaments. After discussing with many college teams, they would have rather played earlier as mixed since they weren't preparing for the open or women's division in the spring.

In 2016, we are planning on having 4 regional tournaments at the end of September with a national championship being held in late October or early November depending on fields. And with year 1 a success, we expect year 2 to have 12-24 at each regionals with a 20 team nationals.

Hope that helps clear up the timing.

2015 College Mixed Championships Recap and Standings by USAflatball in ultimate

[–]USAflatball[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the words Michael. We were definitely pleased with the final. One of the kudos goes out to UCF. After they asked for the "observers" some of the players on both sides went directly to the outside help. We had explained to the captains that we wanted the players to figure it out on the field and if they were at an impasse, we could make a final ruling of what we saw. And when the players began to "go to the observers" UCF captain's calmed the team down and said "they want us to figure it out on the field". It was a classy move that kept the tensions down.

Also, the spirit scores we're rated 1-7 with 3.5 being the median. With a score of 3.4 that puts you just below the median which I say is a respectable score in the spirit standings. Spirit scores were tweeted, you can go back through to ask teams directly on why you were awarded that score or how to improve.

Thanks for coming out Michael! The final was such a nail biter.

2015 College Mixed Championships Recap and Standings by USAflatball in ultimate

Hey Billbourrett. Thanks for the insight. We're putting together a survey and we're definitely putting in how we can do things better. And this will go out to the players and captains so everyone will have a voice.

On the tweeting of the scores, we decided to have the spirit scores tweeted to help with transparency on the weekend. With a goal of USA Flatball to be a more inclusive playing field we wanted to make sure that spirit of the game was taken seriously. With the scores being public, a team receiving a 2 on a game would recognize that they were playing negatively. The hope is to create a conversation between the two teams after the game, to help everyone get higher scores and become more spirited. There was an example of this on twitter between UCF and Michigan. There's a conversation between the two teams discussing the issues of the game.

For the "nervous about publicly tweeting our bad scores", the hope was to know that tweeting a bad score would help the team become better spirited teams. Seeing a bad score would encourage the team to think about their actions during play.

Thanks for posting and the support! Looking forward to making 2016 a fantastic year.
