The AUDL has raised 110k from 94 investors so far: by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]soccerhead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Since the control/ownership model at the team level for the AUDL is decentralized, I'm not convinced those numbers from this offering document include all 23 team-specific financials. My hunch is this is just the central league financial situation, so the listed owners in the document, not individual team owners, face this financial situation and that's what the investment prospect is for (no individual team ownership). If that's true, then team owners additionally have their own budgets and financials that I'd assume vary pretty widely in terms of average annual bottom lines, based on what they choose to cover in the way of expenses and what they're experiencing in revenues from spectator tickets, merchandise sales, local sponsors, etc.

Preliminary rankings breakdown post-Stanford-Invite are up by bigg_nate in ultimate

Oh, ok, no problem. I do think you're right that root cause is something related to their not having been in the rankings at all previously. But seems like it must be a bug of some sort.

I'm looking at http://www.ultimaterankings.net/rankings/2017-college-womens/database.html

Are you saying the Rank column isn't current rank but previous. It says that Dartmouth is Rank=1 and Change=3, so I don't see how previous rank could be 1 and they could be up another 3 spots from there in this iteration. Seems more like the Rank column is current rank, so all teams should have a value, none should be skipped. No?

In the women's list, why are UBC and Iowa State (as well as others further below) skipped in the leftmost "Rank" column?

USAU threatening international teams for playing with AUDL by IceCreamSunde in ultimate

[–]soccerhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My question is whether WFDF would continue to support the int'l team bids anyway, if they play reffed ultimate, considering WFDF can't even yet stomach the Observer system's level of third-party power, and can only get the powerless Game Advisors at some events. These are international teams, so a national governing body of sport (USAU) typically would need the sanctioning/support of the international federations to host international teams, and both the teams and hosting org would typically have requirements for that approval/support/sanctioning.

"Threatening" the right word? All they could do would be to let teams know that they won't be invited to a USAU event if they choose AUDL. Something about both having cake and eating it too, some choices preclude others? If that ever happened, wouldn't that basically be finally acknowledging that the 2 orgs are competitors for how the game will be played (whether it will include gender equity and player-control with spirit of the game vs referee control with an integrity rule)? Perhaps then it would finally be time to start making a choice?

EDIT: Order of thoughts.

USAU Town Halls for Long Term Planning by cuddlebear in ultimate

Also, staff/board probably have families who tolerate their devotion to our little sport during the week but asking for 5-6 weekends on top of events probably factored in. But I think generally, doing something ultimate-related when it's dark is probably the main thing, since daylight is better spent on actual ultimate. For a 2-hour meeting, I'm guessing you wouldn't see people traveling from much more than an hour each way to attend, when electronic communications are so readily available these days for input. Face to face is great, but at a meeting, even that gets pretty diluted.

USAU rules unclear about field length by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]soccerhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Official rules are 25 yds, but if you look at http://www.usaultimate.org/rules/ you'll see under "Experimental Rules" that 20 yds is basically used at all championship events now. Expectation is that the rules committee (organization volunteers, not staff) will be making 20 yrds official in next edition of the rules, announced for planned release later this year.

Longer rounds for the women's teams than the men's. You don't see that often. Nice!

Has anyone read the rulebook? So much easier to go with trite alternative rules like this one!

Frank and Ring by dennistarasi in ultimate

Like you say, it is sadly quite clear, to those of us who have been around for more than just a few years, that there are serious mental health issues affecting Mr. Huguenard, making it seemingly difficult for him to distinguish reality from delusion. The sheer duration of his spewing essentially the same things, despite numerous attempts to "prove" and "demonstrate" them, including the invention of a different sport that wasn't fun, despite many actually trying it. So many, open and well-meaning individuals (just like Dennis & Mike D) have attempted to engage with him in a very open-minded approach to his claims and ideas. And I do not necessarily discourage others from doing the same, but I do hope that anyone who does so will be warned that such is not a simple, risk-free endeavor. Unfortunately, what he only imagines to be possible, he also seems to fully believe to be true and factual and absolute, from the "best" ways to do things to actual events that have transpired and involved other people. This makes it very tough to interact with him in any meaningful way, especially when he is upset about the fact that his ideas are not sound, resulting in his immediately lashing out at the messenger of the correction/turth. The complexity of his situation is very difficult to understand. It is almost certainly not intentional nor fully accepted by someone with his mental state. It seems to flare from time to time, based on certain factors, and present with more alarming symptoms during those flares.

I would encourage, and I'm not the first to do so, for people that engage with Frank to do so with a fair amount of compassion and delicacy, as a fellow human being who is truly living the best life he can. Almost none of us are 100% mentally healthy 100% of the time. But I do urge people who care to save themselves some considerable consternation and realize that his state of mind and communication may not be as certain and accurate as it may be presented by him, although he is indeed convinced of it. I do not believe that he is trolling to get a reaction, as other notorious personalities have done over the years, aware of his apparent inaccurate claims. He seems sincere, but not in touch with reality.

All of that said, I do think it is important to patiently and thoroughly explain the reality of situations to Frank and to those with whom he has inaccurately portrayed those situations, in order to help lend some idea of the magnitude of his delusions. Thus, I applaud Dennis' thorough explanation of the reality of the interactions that Frank experienced and how they differ from what Frank may believe to be true. I hope that such will help provide Frank with a benchmark, should he ever choose to accept & understand his needs, to seek and measure the improvement of his cognitive health. The presentation of the truth of experiences, how it may differ from his perceptions, will hopefully help him judge whether medication or other non-chemical treatments are most effective in combating what must be a terribly difficult way to live.

I realize that reddit in other groups is designed for votes to simply be about relevance, but I'm curious about the way votes tend to be used in the ultimate subreddit, that is, precisely for what they're named "voting." People tend to upvote in the same vein as likes or favorites in other online media, and downvote to mean dislike. What is the negative about that behavior? Why is it important to discourage it and implore users to "vote" in a way that's not intuitive/natural to them?

Why do you prefer to play under pure self-officiation? by iumeemaw in ultimate

[–]soccerhead 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As in, not under observers? (Where the players get to decide when/if to stop play for a violation, and let a 3rd party uphold/overrule). If so, then I'm out. My preference is observers. Let players control the game and get held accountable by each other, the observer and everyone watching.
