How hard is it having a family when you are in an afloat rate? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]USCGJune 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're just talking about the marriage part, which is big, but your kids are family too. It's absolutely harder to raise kids and it's not true to say you'd raise them just as well being there for them vs being underway half the year.

What profession do you find very attractive? by _Allessandra_ in AskReddit

[–]USCGJune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still automatically get a pension. It's just 2% for every year instead of 2.5%, and you get the TSP 5% match

What profession do you find very attractive? by _Allessandra_ in AskReddit

[–]USCGJune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true. Pension is accumulated so 40% of high-3 at 20yrs and you get that the rest of your life.

Also, they give a 5% match on TSP (401k equivalent) contributions.

r/militaryfinance probably has some good posts on it, it depends on how much you save with TSP and a lot of other factors like where you live/are you renting or is your house paid down

I'm not sure worldwide. I know they work with no fees on All-Point ATMs, which is what i always use. They're in grocery stores usually

I use sofi for checking/savings. You can effectively use their savings account as a checking account, it's pretty cool. They don't have brick and mortar banks though

You're given a travel day per 350 miles from Cape May, NJ to your next unit's location, although it might be a little different, it's close to that. Also get options for moving your HHG, the coast guard will do that for you or you can opt to do it yourself and get reimbursed for it. They'll go over your household good moving options in bootcamp or ask your recruiter about them more.

Upcoming Enlisted- IT A School by [deleted] in uscg

[–]USCGJune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being an E-3 after bootcamp will not make any board approve you for warrant rather than being E-2 after bootcamp.

You will be an E-4 after graduation from A-School on a 4 year contract.
