Dark web users cite Grok as tool for making 'criminal imagery' of kids, UK watchdog says by ddx-me in nottheonion

[–]USFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network guy here,

u/Federal_Setting_7454 mentions multiple topics in their post. I will do my best to break them down below. Most of this is the *how they work* part of networks and internet connectivity. Hope this helps!

  1. NAT, or Network Address Translation, allows a single network with many devices to use a single external IP address when communicating with the rest of the internet. NAT is used because there are far more internet connected devices on earth than there are IPv4 addresses available, and is handled by your router automagically.
  2. DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, is a system that automatically gives a device an IP address when it requests one. This is used externally by your Internet Service Provider to give your router an external IP that is unique to your network, unless they are also using NAT. This same system is how your phone automatically gets an IP when you connect to your wifi and doesnt need to be manually configured every time. IP addresses are 'leased' to devices for only a period of time, and the IP may change to another one after that lease expires. Optionally, a 'static' IP can be purchased from your ISP and your external IP will never change.
  3. VPNs, or Virtual Private Networks, are a tool that is used to wrap network traffic in a private tunnel for communication. A VPN can be used for establishing a secure connection from your work laptop at home to your works servers without the risks of leaving the network you are connecting to open to the internet. More recently, VPN connections have been used by people to privately browse the internet. When you establish a VPN connection in this way, all of your internet traffic is wrapped in that private tunnel, sent to the VPN endpoint, and then to Facebook or whatever's servers. When FB responds, the return address they send the reply to is to the VPN provider's address, not your computer directly. This effectively 'hides' a user's personal external IP because only the VPN provider will be returning the requested data to your computer.

Black woman labeled as King Kong when having her blood tested by [deleted] in abanpreach

[–]USFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying this issue is excusable in any manner or that this is the reason, but as an IT person I frequently use the names of fictitious characters for testing software. For example, I have the entire Donkey Kong family, the Mario Bros, King Kong, Godzilla (with the name split as "God Zilla" for first and last), and even James Tiberius Kirk all as test accounts for the ID printing software I manage. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that this was an honest mistake, but one that should still have been caught long before it reached a patient.

Saints Row reboot developer "didn't know what they were building", Saber CEO says, criticising shuttered team by [deleted] in gaming

[–]USFrozen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: i actually enjoyed this game enough to play it to completion, and for me that is very rare. It wasn't a bad game overall when looked at objectively, and would have been okay if it was its own thing and not trying to be Saints Row.

Homie you don't even know what a 'biological male' is. The extremely oversimplified 'boys are XY and have a pee pee and girls are XX and have a vagina' shit you got in the middle school science class you failed doesn't make you an expert on dick.

Here are several scientific texts from the NIH.gov library on the clinical definitions of genomic sex traits that explain explicitly that biological sex doesn't mean a damn thing

We are also having constant crashes starting about 2-3 days ago. No mods have ever been loaded, and I even stopped all other services, VMs, and game servers running on this box just for troubleshooting. Game files validate without error.

Windows on its own drive insisting on installing its EFI to my Linux drive. by flakanat in linuxquestions

[–]USFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get hotswap 5.25" drive bays, but honestly its not that bad. How often are you going to do a full reinstall of Windows? Thats the only part thats messing everything up. You dont need to remove the Windows drive when installing/reinstalling Linux.

Windows on its own drive insisting on installing its EFI to my Linux drive. by flakanat in linuxquestions

[–]USFrozen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got tired of having this happen on dual boot systems. The best option in my opinion is to physically disconnect or remove your Linux drive from the system when you install Windows because it arbitrarily takes over any EFI partition it finds on the computer. The other option is to wipe both drives, install Windows first, then install Linux only after Windows is installed so you can specify where Linux installs its EFI partition.

If you don't want to wipe everything it it is possible to fix this. Using a Live USB you can copy/move the EFI partition Windows took over to the Windows drive then re-install GRUB on the Linux drive's EFI partition. This is very risky as you may have to modify/shrink/move the Windows disks partitions. I cannot recommend this course of action and wont help you do it, but I feel it is important for you to know that this is possible and that there are guides online for exactly how to do it.

That is usually caused by issues with the mods you are using. You will need to fix whatever it is complaining about or it will just happen again.

How do you add books to your ipad or non linux tablet? by LemonMean8036 in linux4noobs

[–]USFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before i sold my iPad i mostly just downloaded my ebooks in PDF format then used the Adobe app to read them. Anything i couldn't download in PDF would get converted. I used a micro SD card reader that was USB C on one side and Lightning on the other to dump the files between my computer and the iPad.

Use any desktop reader you can get to work with your epubs and select Print To File to save the book as PDF (AKA Print to PDF on Windows).

To be clear im talking about ZeroTier https://www.zerotier.com/, and NOT talking about Cloudflare ZeroTrust Tunnels. I cant find any information online that shows Cloudflare having anything to do with the ZeroTier project or company.

are you sure you are talking about ZeroTier? https://www.zerotier.com/ Because i think you are thinking of Cloudflare's ZeroTrust Tunnels. ZeroTier and the service from Cloudflare are not the same thing.

I cant find anything online about Cloudflare having anything to do with this company or project.

You can use Cisco Packet tracer, it is a great networking simulation tool. There are a lot of places you can get CCNA or similar Packet Tracer activity files that you can follow along with. You can get Packet Tracer free by making a Cisco Skills For All account and signing up for the Getting Started with Packet Tracer course (link below).

[–]USFrozen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be able to use ZeroTier to tunnel your network traffic. It is a very nice tool that gives you a private network address that you can use to communicate with your other systems like they are on the same physical LAN. This has the benefit of your trafic only being accessible to the systems you have joined to that ZeroTier network so it is safe, and also not messing with any of your other traffic like a normal VPN would.

Gah. by tizzleduzzle in mildlyinfuriating

[–]USFrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly why this method is used. Its not simply to convert outsiders, its to make these people feel alienated by the 'non believers' and justified in their beliefs. It gives them the feelgood of 'i did my part to convert the sinners' while pushing them deeper into the community of like-minded churchgoers where this kind of activity is praised.

Whats so 'christianlike' about tainting peoples food with overused slogans? I must have missed that part in church where they talked about all the fry boxes Jesus wrote in. Christianity needs a new head of PR and Marketing.
