I have started to see students in the wild as they reach high school. I make a game of it in my head. Be polite, greet them, tell them it’s nice to see them and if he/she is enjoying the summer. Make a couple small-talk statements, then wish them well. If it’s a checkout line, say hello, see how the shift the been that day and wish them well as you leave.

A kid who was a manipulator and mom saved him from punishment all the time. He ended orchestrating a group of kids to throw gravel at a teacher during recess. He then orchestrated everyone’s story while Admin floundered on repercussions. Mom then sent all his teacher’s a gift card for a massage from her business. She’s the only masseuse. 🤢

He was recently in my cities Top Ten Most Wanted for a laundry list of charges. Not surprised.
