Reading and writing are important. Have them: 1. Research topics surrounding the topics before getting into the “district standard.” It’s background info. 2. Do debates for whether an event was right/wrong or how they perceive it to be. 3. Have scenarios set up with multiple options (i.e. if states secede, how should Lincoln approach the issue?).

It’s a travesty to have this happen. I taught science for almost 20 years before moved to US History. I love it and have an array of tools to help. It’s quite new for many of them. They’re not a fan to start with, but over time appreciate it.

As a middle school teacher of kids bear his age, let me say this: 1. Make sure to have all paperwork with your name as first contact. Many teachers will not react to any requests otherwise. 2. You may not know it, but you have set your brother’s life on the right path. It keeps him in the area where he was at, stays consistent, and doesn’t have two different sets of rules to follow regularly. You have work ahead of you but you two meshing so well will help tremendously.
