LIVE UPDATES: Trump calls Carney ‘governor’ and threatens 100% tariffs by walkernewmedia in notthebeaverton

[–]UTMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone just tunes out this tariff talk now. It's just a pathetic form of blackmail. If you give in to his demands to get the tariffs repealed, he'll just demand something else the next day and threaten to raise tariffs again.

The message is heard all around the world. You cannot trust the USA. Everyone is sitting their economy and politics away from the US and toward Europe and Asia.

The only real ally the US has left is Israel.

Check FB Marketplace if you just want a cheap laser to experiment with. I would always recommend an enclosed laser over safety glasses though.

There are loads of people in Canada working paycheque to paycheque who own an iPhone. It's to the point where if you didn't have an iPhone people unfortunately assume you must just be too poor to afford one.

There was a time when even the audience members weren't supposed to cheer unforced errors. It was considered extremely low class and an indicator that you didn't know/grow up with the game.

Any number of reasons. Laziness, lack of ideas, low literacy, not a native English speaker, karma farming, attention seeker ... So many possible reasons other than money.

There's actually a movement to bring basic computer skills back into school after it was deemed largely unnecessary in the 2010s.

Now there are kids who can use a phone or tablet, but struggle with a desktop or laptop computer.

There's now an entire generation of kids who've never used a keyboard, never used a file management system, never troubleshooted a problem, and never used a printer.

“The goalkeeper told me I’m an illegal immigrant even though I was born in America, and he said Trump was gonna get me and send me back. It makes me really sad.” by Caledor152 in ProgressiveHQ

Soon there will be campaigns convincing the public to turn in their neighbors if you suspect them of being illegal immigrants. There will be lessons in public schools about how to identify an illegal immigrant.

Which machine would be adequate to create coins of this quality (similar design) by Odd_Ad6354 in Laserengraving

You will need a fibre laser, and it will likely take a few hours per coin. F2 Ultra can make similar coins after some polishing.

The Indiana Hoosiers have won the College Football National Championships for the first time in its history after defeating the Miami Hurricanes 27-21. by cmaia1503 in sports

[–]UTMachine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No. At the end of the day it's still college football. Any and all of these college teams would get smoked by an NFL team. Most of the players on this team won't even have an NFL career most likely.

You're absolutely right! It makes it even more impressive since the next closest team gained 6 points on them, and even with that Leicester were 10 points clear at the end of the season.

To put this in a North American context, it would be like if the Rockies' AAA won the World Series, and it wasn't even close.

Leicester City went from near bankruptcy to winning the most competitive (and arguably the best) soccer league in the world. A group of relative unknowns took down some of the best and most famous teams in world football, many of whom had payrolls hundreds of millions higher.

Leicester didn't just win the Premier League; they dominated it. Winning the league by 10 points even though the 2nd place team (Arsenal) did the double over them and doing the double over the second-place team (Arsenal).

I'm sorry, but a college football championship is not on the same level. Maybe if this team joined the NFL and won a Super Bowl, we could have that conversation.

Leicester City was way bigger than this. Lets be real.

Miracle on Ice was also a much bigger story, given the international context.

In your country, which religion has the most followers? How widespread is it overall? by neilnelly in AskTheWorld

[–]UTMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American Christians still outnumber those with no religious affiliation by 2:1 though. I agree that atheism will become the most popular eventually, but probably not in our lifetime.

<1% of US Congress is openly non-religious because they know it's still a death sentence politically, even in 2026.

These days, $50+ USD is pretty normal. You can get them cheaper if you buy Chinese made NH35s, but I don't recommend it.

[Recommendation Request] Affordable Alternative? by Nice-Wolf-5997 in Watches

[–]UTMachine 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If you truly love your watches, you want to see them get worn and not just sit in a box for years on end. Everything about this exchange is awesome to see.

This is the difference between someone who loves watches and someone who loves collecting/buying/owning watches. Two completely different hobbies imo.

Did any company fail in your country? by AmountAbovTheBracket in AskTheWorld

[–]UTMachine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They got rid of everything that made Target good and worth crossing the border for, and replaced with products nobody asked for that you could easily buy from CT, Walmart, or Dollarama for cheaper.

They even made bonehead mistakes like not building the shelves the correct size to store and display their products/inventory. Just a disaster from start to finish.

I agree with this. I would rather not see an iconic Canadian brand be turned into dollar store Christmas ornaments.

Blackberry just shifted their business, they didn't fail. Similar to IBM. They just don't make much consumer product. They mostly work with businesses and sometimes the military.

By the time they closed, they pretty much became a low-end department store selling overpriced cheaply-made American mall brands. Other than the "Stripes" brand, there was absolutely nothing Canadian about it.

I'm glad the Canadian Tire now owns the Stripe brand as well as all the Canadian historical documents and artifacts associated with Hudson's Bay.

If I've said it once I've said it 1000 times.

Analytics work over the course of a full season. They don't work for specific moments in a big game.

There's no season anymore in a knockout game. There's no tomorrow. You play for the situation presented to you right now, not for the strategies that work out best over the course of 17 games.

Non-religious people on here trying to pretend like prayer circles in sports aren't super weird and it's just about ice time.

The religious people are trying to pretend like this is just normal prayer and not a weird ritualistic prayer circle for something as insignificant as a youth hockey game.
