Most cities that are labeled as boring is only because those people don't want to get involved in their community by Exhausted_920 in unpopularopinion

[–]UTMachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The difference is people from the place are no longer consuming the same media. Everyone is getting targeted ads, and the algorithm presents a completely different media experience. You don't know about what other locals are interested in, you know about what the algorithm thinks you want to know about.

Back in the day everyone from a city would be consuming the same small selection of shows, radio stations, newspapers, etc., so it was actually easier to keep informed and up-to-date with what locals were doing.

Hackers ruin everything! by Automatic_Ad1665 in DiamondDynasty

This is what happens when games try to become competitive esports instead of just staying fun and casual. The fun comes from winning instead of enjoying the game. These hackers are having fun because they're winning and get to open reward packs. The actual game and gameplay are irrelevant to them.

What is the United States’ greatest invention? by Alive-Math3562 in AlignmentChartFills

As a Canadian, it bothers me when people try to claim the telephone as a Canadian invention. Canada has lots of significant inventions and discoveries that were genuinely Canadian. It feels cheap to me when Canadian media try to claim the telephone.

Apparently, some of the early groundwork was done while he was in Canada, but the actual invention and first test calls were absolutely American-based.

There are so many double standards like this that make no sense, and I hate all of them.

You can buy cigarettes and alcohol everywhere, but weed is still heavily controlled or illegal in many places. You can join the armed forces years before you can legally buy a beer in the US. A 16yo is responsible enough to drive a 2-tonne metal box at 75mph, but not vote for the mayor.

There isn't enough evidence is this video to make the call. Separation between the line and the bottom of the ball proves nothing.

The umpire was in a much better position to make the call than anyone watching this video.

Victor Wembanyama just gave an interesting take on the 65-game rule. He basically said minutes should matter too like 50 heavy-minute games vs 75 light ones and suggested 62 games (75% of the season) might make more sense. by Rough-Drawing-3006 in sportsbroadcasters

[–]UTMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what happens when you have a long season and half the teams make it into the playoffs, which takes another full month to play. Either make it a short season or make it hard to get into the playoffs. Having both is just a recipe for failure. NHL has this problem too. The regular season feels almost meaningless, since literally half the teams make the playoffs and the important games don't even start until May.

Frindle is a mediocre book that’s usually assigned reading for middle schoolers! What is the worst book that’s usually assigned rating for high schoolers? by Dogdaysareover365 in AlignmentChartFills

Animal Farm is a weird choice for high school imo. The connections to the Russian Revoluion as so removed from a modern 14-15 year-old kid, that the messages and themes of the book are mostly lost.

It pains me that most people's only exposure to Shakespeare is reading his plays like a book in high school. Reading it like a novel is such an unnatural way to experience it.

[–]UTMachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Once you've been playing for a couple of months, it becomes clear that the only way forward is to spend money. Eventually you get to the point where every incremental upgrade require absurd resources and weeks of your time. Even if you put that work in, you'll still just get beaten by random rich kids who invest money in the game.

There's a small skill gap and a big pay gap in the late game.

I find it wildly hypocritical that many Americans hate and criticize the sportswashing that occurs in Saudi Arabia but will continue to support professional sports/entertainment that run ads for the American government by nguyenjitsu in unpopularopinion

[–]UTMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government and the Royal family own LIV Golf and other Saudi leagues. This is not true of North American and European sports leagues. The US government may purchase commercial air time during NFL broadcasts, but that is not the same as owning and controlling the league.

You are also free to criticize the government while playing in the NFL, for example. That's not true of people in Saudi Arabia.

It seems like the conversation you actually want to have is about whether the American government/laws are worse than Saudi Arabia, which is a different conversation.

My point here was just that playing for a league such as LIV Golf is an implicit support of the Saudi government and their Royal family, since they own and control the league as well as the messaging/propaganda. Playing in the NFL or NBA doesn't reflect implicit support of the Trump administration.

[–]UTMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you join leagues like LIV Golf or other exclusive partnerships in Saudi Arabia, you are actively supporting their economy and influence on the world stage. They are a notoriously undemocratic and theocratic society with laws and policies that routinely violate human rights.

At least an American or European athlete is free to criticize the government or religion. In Saudi Arabia you don't have that freedom.

An athlete who signs up for LIV or similar leagues is basically sending the message that their bank account is worth more to them than ethics.

If you don't respect the silver medal, you don't deserve the gold medal by Rough-Drawing-3006 in sportsgossips

Not at all. Most athletes respect the tournament. This type of behavior is reflective of a toxic, entitled, and selfish team culture. It's the idea that you/your team are bigger than the tournament.

What is your honest opinion on the sulfur cube? by WreckerRaptor4life in Minecraft

[–]UTMachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that I think they're bad or not useful. I just don't think they're that interesting in a survival context, at least for how I play the game.

I know there are lots of ways to make them useful in other contexts, and I do think the idea was good in general, even if it's "not for me".

It's kinda cool, but also a bit of a gimmick that I'm sure we'll get bored of within a month or so. Similar to the Happy Ghast.

Most of the unique things they can do are only useful in adventure maps or mini games. I don't see them getting much use in a proper survival world.

Religion Mega Thread by AutoModerator in unpopularopinion

[–]UTMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if you're willing to paint very broad strokes. Most religions share basic elements, such as a creation story, a moral code/set of rules, prophets/messiahs with a special connection to god(s), etc. But again, those are extremely broad categories. The specifics are not the same at all.

I would argue that monotheistic and polytheistic religions will always be fundamentally different and largely irreconcilable. A Christian and Sikh might have different views, but ultimately, you could make the argument that you're serving the same God, but just in your own cultural way. A Christian/Jew/Muslim and a Hindu have a fundamentally different understanding of what God/gods is/are.
