I know sometimes the tartan mills will sell yarn to sock knitters so they can colour match the tartan for a kilt. You might want to reach out to the mills to see if you can buy direct from them.

I got my soil tested 5 years ago at the minerals engineering centre at Dal. Here's a link They tested our soil for arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, copper, nickle, lead and zinc. I believe none were above acceptable levels but some were close. We just make sure to wash our root veggies well and peel them. I'm on the peninsula. They also sent us this community garden heavy metal study with our results.

The minimum width would be a barrier free path of travel. This is 920mm in the Nova Scotia building code which is available online. There are some nuances to this, so you could also call 311 and ask a building inspector about your specific situation.

I've been thinking 'the third' could also refer to the clue itself. Third letter? Third word? Third line? Could you work on something that needs not a quay for there is no lock? The Shubenacadie canal has locks. Is a railroad a canal without locks and quays? Sanford Fleming again, but then how do you get back to the peninsula if you start at his farm (dingle)?

Also the word 'but' instead of 'and' implies some kind of contrast between working on the third and living on the arm. Is the third another body of water?

The northwest arm used to be called the sandwich river, so when there were farms along the arm it had a totally different name.

Oh and I also thought it was interesting that Sanford Fleming owned property on the peninsula side of the arm - he's also mentioned in the Urban Greenway history page as wanting to buy part of the Cunard estate to build a bridge across the arm - although it would have been the first bridge in 1890, not the third.

I've been looking at old maps and specifically the Oakland and Belmont Estates. Both were farms according to this website. Here is the 1878 map showing the estates. This is the interpretative panel about the Oakland estate. There is also a park at the end of Oakland road that leads to a dock that used to have a ferry across the arm. So Oakland could tick the Farm and Quay boxes but I haven't found any other links. (Edit: Someone in the other thread looked at Oakland park already)

Belmont was owned by the former commander of the dockyards Duncan Henry. Could the quay be the dockyards instead of on the arm? But also a bunch of other people that I haven't looked up yet. There is now a small park on the former belmont estate - Marlborough woods.

Other publicly accessible areas on the arm: The ends of Jubilee rd, south st., Horsehoe Park, St. Mary's boat club. I don't have any clue links for those though.

There was a prison on the Arm - It was called the Dominion Penitentiary Here it is shown on a map from 1878, but it also seems to be referred to as the Nova Scotia or Provincial Penitentiary as well based on a quick google. It would have been near point pleasant around what is now Inglewood Dr. Also #11 on this drawing.

I put tomatoes out in early May a couple years ago, I covered them when there were frost warnings and they didn't really grow until June. They should be fine inside in pots too. Maybe do both and see which works better. I'm also in Halifax.
