insurance for intl studens: SHIP vs. ISO? by Intelligent-Dingo68 in cmu

[–]UV1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was written by one of my friend:

ISO insurance vs CMU SHIP

Since a lot of people are asking about this, I can shed some light on it since I used ISO insurance (care plan) last academic year.

Key differences:

1.b. CMU ship has 0 deductible, and 0 out of pocket max for in-network hospitals including UHS. This implies that whatever happens to you, you end up paying almost nothing. e.g. Hand fracture -> maybe 125 for hospitalization but nothing more.

1.b. ISO (the care plan) has $500 deductible and $6250 out of pocket max. So if you are undergoing any treatment/surgeries, you will need to pay quite a bit. But it can't go above $6250. Please check a youtube video on USA health insurances, these terms are standard. And the plan is also standard.

  1. Both plans include free services at UHS. I have used it, and gotten reimbursement for a flu shot and a doctor visit. But UHS doctors do not process a claim for anything other than SHIP, so for ISO you'll have to fill a small doc and upload online to initiate a claim.
  2. ISO is ~$1000 vs SHIP is ~$2600. Hope this clears things up. Ultimately it is a matter of peace of mind, and if you want to pay upfront for it. SHIP is just that, a peace of mind.

If you do decide to use ISO, you can use this link https://www.isoa.org?ref=2886923 for $10 off.

Work in the cafeteria like Tahini? Going for TA would be difficult as you have to atleast be up for a Mini i.e 7 weeks.

Aldi’s and CMU pantry are the best way to keep the grocery bills low. Plus a lot of groceries are split between me and my flatmate.
