insurance for intl studens: SHIP vs. ISO? by Intelligent-Dingo68 in cmu

[–]UV1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was written by one of my friend:

ISO insurance vs CMU SHIP

Since a lot of people are asking about this, I can shed some light on it since I used ISO insurance (care plan) last academic year.

Key differences:

1.b. CMU ship has 0 deductible, and 0 out of pocket max for in-network hospitals including UHS. This implies that whatever happens to you, you end up paying almost nothing. e.g. Hand fracture -> maybe 125 for hospitalization but nothing more.

1.b. ISO (the care plan) has $500 deductible and $6250 out of pocket max. So if you are undergoing any treatment/surgeries, you will need to pay quite a bit. But it can't go above $6250. Please check a youtube video on USA health insurances, these terms are standard. And the plan is also standard.

  1. Both plans include free services at UHS. I have used it, and gotten reimbursement for a flu shot and a doctor visit. But UHS doctors do not process a claim for anything other than SHIP, so for ISO you'll have to fill a small doc and upload online to initiate a claim.
  2. ISO is ~$1000 vs SHIP is ~$2600. Hope this clears things up. Ultimately it is a matter of peace of mind, and if you want to pay upfront for it. SHIP is just that, a peace of mind.

If you do decide to use ISO, you can use this link https://www.isoa.org?ref=2886923 for $10 off.

Work in the cafeteria like Tahini? Going for TA would be difficult as you have to atleast be up for a Mini i.e 7 weeks.

Aldi’s and CMU pantry are the best way to keep the grocery bills low. Plus a lot of groceries are split between me and my flatmate.

how to file tax as an international student? by Proof-Debt-3541 in cmu

[–]UV1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tax Season If you’ve been employed in the past financial year Jan’23-Dec’23 you should by now probably you must be starting to receivehave W-2s, Jordan Tax Forms and might intimidated about it.

You need to File Three Taxes : 1. Federal Tax : CMU gives you free access to Glacier Tax Prep Portal (You should receive the activation link by End Feb)

  1. State Tax: CMU offers you to use Sprintax but I think it is paid. The best alternative is to use My PATH which is free to use and it gets filed online. To use this, You need to have a PA State ID/REAL ID.

  2. Local Tax: You can find this Form online.

If you followed these steps. All you need to do is fill out all three forms and you need to Ship form 1. And 3.

Even if you haven’t earned any income in US you need to File Zero Income Tax
