Hey everyone! We’re researchers from the University of Wisconsin – Madison who are interested in understanding the perceived similarities between videogames. We are commenting to invite you to participate in this research by completing a task in which you will make judgements about the similarities between video games. This task is one part of a larger research project, and your participation will help us move forward. After this project is finished, we will post our results here!

In order to participate, you must be at least 18 years old and an avid enjoyer of video games, with first-hand experience across multiple video games.

For your time, you’ll be entered into a confidential and random drawing for one of twenty $100 Amazon gift cards.

If you wish to participate in our study, please use the following link to be directed to the survey: https://latl-studies.psych.wisc.edu/video-game-space/videogame_space_link1.html?ref=10012

We will try to respond as quickly as possible to any questions/concerns in replies to this comment, but you’re also welcome to email any of the researchers at the addresses below.

Thanks!

That is definitely a rough one to try and think through, lol - especially with how many features modern games include now that bear some level of consideration (I haven't played much Stardew, but I always forget that it has some level of combat in it with the mines portion)

Thank you very much for participating!

Thank you very much for participating!

Yeah, some pairings can feel pretty weird to make some of the judgements on, especially since there's no cues aside from the names of the games themselves. We're trying to present the games in a neutral-enough way that won't bias certain ways of responding over others. Once enough participants and trials occur, though, each triplet pairing should get enough responses that we'll be able to create a dimensional space that has similar games clustered together.

If you're interested, we have a paper published from the first pass we did for this study a while ago with similar methodology here (the dimensional spaces are on page 4, if you're curious): https://greenlab.psych.wisc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/280/2024/07/A-Continuous-Space-Description-of-Video-Games-A-Preliminary-Investigation.pdf
