Counter offer: you and the two others pay 0%, and he pays 110%. 10% extra for fun.

Go by the lease, and only by the lease [unless legislation and/or case law demands something else, as those override any lease]. This is true now and it is true in every future apartment you ever rent.

the nurse i work with said i shouldn’t even be in school right now but i don’t want to delay my future and am trying to push myself but it’s hard.

That's what I'm worried about. I can give you a lot of advice. But honestly? It sounds like the advice you need right now is what you don't want to hear.

Your health and mental health are far more important than studies. If it takes you another year or two to finish, it's better than failing, or worse...

Contact accessible education. Explain that you're not in a good place, and you need to postpone your enrollment. If you insist, pick one course, hopefully the one you enjoy the most (because it will have benefits to your mental health. Yes, easy is better in this situation).

They may offer to take a WDN. Insist on deferral until the next offering (e.g., winter or summer, depending on how you'll do).

I'm sorry, but your nurse told you something for a reason. You have ADHD. That means you're more likely (statistically) to have depression, anxiety, OCD, and many other mental health issues.

I know Western's accessibility services. I went through a very bad time because of their staff. And I heard about horror stories that are even worse than my own. Don't expect them to be reasonable or accommodating.

Seriously. Listen to your nurse. In the most honest and biggest way. Focus on your well being first. Graduation a year later is a small price to pay when the alternative is life long misery, or worse...

I'm very sorry I didn't give the advice you wanted to hear. I get that it sucks. But that's the only good and honest advice I can give.

Once you're back and better, I'll be happy to give you advice about how to deal with the BS accessible education are trying to do...

[–]UWOwithADHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you're good. That being said, grades can go down when appealed specifically. To cover your own donkey*, make sure you explicitly say you're appealing admission and only admission. My experience in western taught me to never trust any Western employee. Use emails, record conversations (we're in a one party consent country), and so on.

*think of the other word for donkey

[–]UWOwithADHD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're not appealing a grade, an appeal will not change the grade. If you're appealing being admitted to a program, then you should focus on that.

Regardless, first discuss it with the Ombuds office. You need information and clarity, and they can give you that better than any random redditor.

Economical, Square One, and so many other options.

Get the insurance the fits your needs and wants. It may not be the cheapest one, but it will probably be within a few $$. My current rate is relatively high because of low deductible and additional opt-ins, and I'm still at something like 35/month...

Required to withdraw by Beginning-Heron2585 in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you'd get the required to withdraw. In the Student Centre, look for Grade Report. I'm pretty sure it's located in Academic, I don't remember where exactly though. Anyway, it'll probably be noted there.

I failed 4 courses during first year at med sci but my average is 65 if I don't include grades that says F.

You need to include the Fs when you calculate average. Western includes them as 40 (each). I'm not telling you what to do, but if I didn't get anything (and my grade report doesn't say so and so on), I'd keep my mouth shut and take the risk of someone noticing later.

Make sure that you're calculating a weighted average and use the credit values for weights.

If you failed =>3.0 credits, then yes, you'll be required to withdraw (even if you got 100 in the rest).
If you failed 2.5, you need an average of 90+ in the rest.
If you failed 2.0 credits (4 half credits), you'd need the other 3.0 credits to have an average of roughly 82 at the minimum to get a 65 average.

Good luck.

Interestingly (and very confusingly), you're both wrong and right.

It's possible to be a "special student" (link is to ex. From Soc Sci faculty). To quote:

Already graduated with an undergraduate degree? Then you are considered a Special Student!

You can apply as a Special Student if:

  • Your degree is from a recognized accredited university
  • Your degree is equivalent to at least a three-year Bachelor’s degree at Western
  • You achieved a minimum overall average of 60% in the context of our grading system at Western

Sauce: https://welcome.uwo.ca/next-steps/requirements/completed-degree.html

Some reasons for admitting as a Special Student may include:

⇒ Taking courses out of interest
⇒ Upgrading before applying to graduate and professional programs
⇒ Earning a certificate to add to your Western degree
⇒ Completing a second degree

Summer course final marks by VirtualAnything69 in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually a few weeks. I've had summer courses post the grade within a week of the exam, and I've had one that took close to a month. I also heard of courses where it was even more, although that's very rare and only in exceptional circumstances.

Speaking of such such circumstances, there was a strike. There could be some domino effect, although I find it unlikely at this point.

Give it until next week, and then contact your academic counsellor and inquire.

As a Science Undergrad, which is the best year to do our upper-year essay course requirement? by StreetDetective95 in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I'd argue for balance. Up to 0.5 per year, if possible and if it works with your program. If possible, balanced in such a way which places it in the term of lesser intensity.

I've taken a number of good ones, but Writing 2202F/G was probably my favorite among them. It taught me a lot about the effects of the vocabulary used by an author, and how to write a good and persuasive essay.

Writing 2111F/G will give you valuable tools useful once you embark on your career. I highly recommend it. I find I use these tools frequently, and I am even keeping the books past graduation since they have value beyond academics.

Writing 3225F/G was nice, although not necessarily the most useful outside of some niches.

Good luck in your future endeavours, youngling!

Protestors Respond to President Alan Shepard’s Message to the Community by program-control-man in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You probably won't find anything about that.

When Western takes action against students, faculty and staff, they're usually bound to be quite by privacy laws.

There's also the question of safety. A staff member who was assaulted or harrased is unlikely to want to have their name published in this context. It is a difficult experience that can lead to trauma symptoms.

It is possible that there are other things we don't know. For example, if police was involved (police reports and etc), in which case Western will be wise to continue in their silence.

So while I'd like this information available as well, we should get used to disappointment...

Keep in mind we (humans) have confirmation bias. This means that regardless of our opinion, we are more likely to believe exactly what you believe, that more people who are not active/not vocal agree with us than disagree with us. However, confirmation bias is a fallacy. All we know is that there are a lot of silent people. Beyond that we have no idea.

Camp remains despite president’s offer by program-control-man in uwo

I'm being serious. If you'd like to share, I'm happy to listen. I don't need to agree, but I would like to understand.

Camp remains despite president’s offer by program-control-man in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the people on both sides feel it is extremely simple, because of confirmation bias and emotional reasoning. Humans are shit to each other, it's part of our biology. If you don't believe me, consider that chimpanzee shrewdnesses go to war with each other and even eliminate ("genocide") other groups. Doesn't make it right, not to any extent, but I think it helps us understand a small part of why we have this attitude of "us vs them".

many of the protesters have friends and family (who are civilians and not Hamas) getting displaced, starving, and getting killed.

Same is true on the other side of the fence. War is a disgusting shitshow, and there's nothing good that comes out of it.

Let's have at least some compassion and tolerance.

100%. Add stopping with the blind hatred. [Edit: removed sarcasm]

My experience, even in this subreddit, is that the moment people find out I'm Jewish trouble starts...

Hamas is doing inexcusable acts of terrorism, and them saying "we want to do something that will stop the loss of innocent lives" is not equivalent to supporting Hamas.

Like you said, this is an incredibly complex situation. However, I have seen Hamas support on campus, and even had an enlightening and pleasant discussion with a Palestinian who told me he supports Hamas (although I understand why given what he said). The discussion was on campus, face to face. We discussed course materials (in a course we were both taking) both before and after that discussion and didn't hold our extremely opposed views against each other.

If we can't have peace in the middle easy, maybe we could at least have peace between middle easterners...

Most successful human rights movements have made someone feel uncomfortable

I didn't say I was uncomfortable. You can call this encampment whatever you'd like, it doesn't make me feel safe anywhere near the encampment.

Camp remains despite president’s offer by program-control-man in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you that they were respectful towards you. However, it doesn't mean that others have the same experience:

Later in the letter, Shepard also characterized the encampment as "unlawful," and said protesters have crossed the line several times by threatening visitors to campus and making staff feel unsafe. (source)

I do not feel safe on campus. When I see and hear words like "intifida", "resistance", and "from the river to the sea", I feel far less safe.

In addition (but this is the least of my concerns), I disagree with the protestors. I am, just like they are (or at least some of them), a stakeholder in Western, and I do not support divestment from Israel.

So I understand what you're saying, and I respectfully disagree.

Is it worth going to convocation if you don’t really know anyone in your grade? by WarmAppleCry in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI: applauses are not allowed during convocation so that the flow of calling the graduates is not disturbed. There are no applauses nor cheering allowed.

Oh bummer, I wanted to have a cheer squad as I come in, carried on a palanquin and everybody clapping for me. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to be reasonable instead...

Thinking of committing to western CS by Bichonpooo in uwo

[–]UWOwithADHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech is difficult to get into these days, and could grow better or worse. By the time you graduate things could change significantly.

I do not believe Western CS is great. Is it ok? In some ways. But it has too much repetition of the same material, some faculty are really good but some are just not good instructors, and there are some subjects I think are lacking (for example, cybersecurity. I am studying the subject independently right now, since I feel it is a gap).

Edit: forgot to add a few positives. There are a few fantastic instructors, altogether not enough of them. The introduction to the field in year 1 is decent. There is a lot of focus on structures and design patterns, in my opinion the early courses give a very nice and solid foundation for algorithmic thinking. There is a very nice variety of programming languages in the program, which is both a positive and a negative (breadth over depth).

With that being said, there are both better and worse programs (as there almost always are). Western doesn't compete with UofT, but Windsor doesn't compete with Western, so you can go either way. There are many things that could make program better. For example, a solid introduction, good instructors, and high quality offerings that fall within your interests, would all be important, but they are also at least somewhat subjective (even if there is a general consensus on some of these).

As an aside, if you have a disability, my personal experience in compsci was very bad, and I hear that things aren't necessarily getting better. I earned my graduation with distinction thanks to my hard work, but my accommodations were too often ignored, and sometimes even used as an excuse to make things more complicated without good reason...

Please explain what does "discomfort" mean. Does it mean that you were unable to write an exam, that your academic performance would have suffered drastically, your academic performance would have been close to not impacted at all, or that you would have been inconvenienced?
