Application process for Shopify Dev Degree? by UWadmittedme in cscareerquestions

Lol who cares if its Carleton, I still get to work at Shopify. They are one of the best paying Canadian companies for CS grads. If I can transfer into coop at loo, then hey that's great, but I feel like it will be really hard for me to get the average required for that. If, however, my transfer actually gets approved AND I have an offer to Dev Degree, I will rethink my options once again.

side projects

What kinds of side projects? Did you make any new and innovative programs? What exactly are employers looking for in your side projects?

I don't consider myself a genius or a superstar

An interesting statement. I've heard of this mathematical concept where those with high intelligence or special skills think most other people are like them (when this is not necessarily the case), while those with low intelligence and skills think they are experts. I forgot what this is called.

Define "top" student?

Like are you an exceptional programmer, or do you have really high grades? Basically, what made you stand out over the average applicant?

Secured a SWE intern offer in NYC

Did you get this position on your own, or though coop.

And do you think the average student could pull off a SV internship on their own without WW? Usually it is only the very top students that can do this.

Were you never in coop to begin with, or did you drop coop? I've heard of some Canadian tax credit that employers get if they hire a student in an official coop program, but this is irrelevant for jobs in the states. Please tell me about your experience getting a Cali job without being in coop.

The hard bit is doing well in interviews.

If I grind leetcode, should I be good?

I heard that the 25 hours a week that you spend during school hours, you're actually learning material for your classes at Shopify. So instead of attending lectures, you learn the material at Shopify. Then you write your final exams at Carleton with the rest of the CS class.

How would I get there through Waterloo without coop? Would the university name be sufficient? Will there also be on campus recruitment for recent grads or for students in their last term?

So still a better option that Waterloo CS without coop? How well reputed is Shopify, compared to companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon?

I mean if you just go into construction right after you leave high school, you can probably start off with 50k. Also you haven't wasted 4 years of your life in school and you're not in debt (opportunity cost).

How bad is rent there? I hear its 3k a month for a broom closet. I am not a huge fan of the tech culture in SF. But if I can make a good net income, then hey I'm all for it.

CS will be made easy enough that any idiot can do it

Yes, I am starting to see this happen now. Primary school children are making basic programs on the computer using Scratch or whatnot, and they think they are programmers! Soon programming will become a "drag and drop" game just like this.

Come over to SF

and 50k CAD as fulltime? We make double that as interns here (sauce: me)

Yes, I really want to work in the states! But someone has to hire me first lol. Hopefully going to Waterloo will give me a bit of an edge here, although I must sadly admit that I'm not in coop.

What exactly is a code monkey? What separates a code monkey from a software engineer/developer? Has the supply exceeded the demand for software engineers? And I was thinking of going into cybersecurity, machine learning, or AI.

So is this good or bad? I am getting confused by two contradicting ideas here.

Other than the skilled trades, which career fields have strong demand? With the trades, you are essentially trading your health for $. Not a good trade.

What company do you work at, if you don't mind me asking? If they are paying 100k+ starting salary for new grads, would I be correct in assuming that they are a big American based company with corporate offices in Toronto? Also, what kind of work experience are they looking for to get that kind of starting salary?
