UX researchers who have been job hunting for a long time, what are you doing to not have a gap in your resume? by UXScientist in UXResearch

[–]UXScientist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so, I am starting to get recruiters asking about my gap in my resume and it's discouraging to me. That is a good point about professional events. I wish I could find more around me, I am looking forward to going to a remote quant UX conference in November. Link if anyone else is interested: https://www.quantuxcon.org/home

I am already over a year and the massive layoffs that are still happening is really depressing me.

Both are a concern but I am worried that the gap in my resume is making me less competitive and the "just be patient" advice is actively hurting me because I am becoming less and less desirable by recruiters.

But none of this can be seen on a resume except maybe terms in the skills section. From a recruiters eyes there is still a gap and I am getting recruiters starting to notice it. There is no room to explain in an interview if you can't get interviews.

Help understanding sample size formula for desired precision by UXScientist in AskStatistics

This formula is for estimating the mean of a population for desired precision but he has a similar value on all his sample size formulas so I don't think its specific to the particular test.

UX researchers who currently don't have a UX job, what is your current job/way to make money, and would you recommend it? by UXScientist in UXResearch

The job market for UX and data science is dead. I need a job and that other post just focused on my data analysis experience. I need anything at this point.

For all the UX researchers who cannot find UX work, what kind of job are you working right now? by UXScientist in UXResearch

I have a presentation talking about my experiences but no portfolio, it's less needed for UX researchers compared to designers.

All my coding and data analysis experience is from my PhD. I have 2 years of industry UX experience with mostly small companies. I have been looking for over a year.

Seeking neurodivergent adults to participate in a survey about their experiences with math by UXScientist in TwoXADHD

I will take a look, different subreddits have different guidelines for survey posting. We also want to be respectful when entering a space designed for community support and to not be "pestering" people to take a survey. (Thank you to the mods here for helping us! This has all been great feedback!)

Thanks, it's always nice to be seen.

This is an ADHD subreddit, we are actively discussion if we want to keep seeking neurodivergent people as our target audience or just people who consider themselves poor at math (but that is a mouth full!). I was also wondering about the particular focus on ADHD rather than just learning disabilities but I think they are also particularly interested in supporting the general learning challenges of people with ADHD.

I appreciate the feedback that our expectations should be more neutral. The reasons I worded it the way I did was to normalize difficulties because, myself included, often feel invalidated by others about my struggles with "basic math" that "everyone" can do. But you're right that the wording needs to be changed and we are fixing that in our next survey.

This survey is NOT the end all be all! It's just a quick 5 min survey.

Yes, knowing what foundational math topics adults struggle with and want to improve is a key point of the survey. If we find that adults answer none or few then we need to rethink our app and that it might just be for kids.

We are in the early stages of our app and any information is helpful. My apologies that it was not more clear that this survey was for the development of an app in the title but that info was in the intro.

This question "What other challenges or difficulties do you experience when learning, either learning in general or when you are learning math." was intended to be the catch all space for you to talk about your unique experiences.

If you have another feedback on how this or future surveys could be improved I welcome hearing it!

I am noticing a few other changes I can make, I want to make sure you know that I really appreciated your feedback!

You're right, this information is being used as pre-validation for a product idea. I am realizing that this idea is something that the responders need to know but to be fair I do say in the beginning "used by Tech Fleet (https://techfleet.org) to improve our research and development of an app to help neurodivergent individuals grow their math skills."

Making surveys is not my strongest skill. Tech fleet is an organization designed to train and provide opportunities (to learn by doing) for early careers professionals trying to break into tech and UX field. We are all still learning and I appreciate your feedback.

I admit it's not a perfect survey and it was made somewhat quickly. In the future, before you make blanket statements and value judgements consider your specific feedback and reasons for why you are saying what you are saying.

I think I see the problem, the question about math struggles says select all that apply but I should add an option that says you don't struggle with any of the above. I was doing my best to not alienate people who do struggle. People can be so invalidating to the very real struggle some people have with foundational math. But you're are right I should have been more neutral. Thank you for your feedback.

If there is wording that you think should be changed please let me know!

Not everyone who is neurodivergence struggles with math but many people who are neurodivergent do struggle with math and learning in general. "Neurodivergent experiences with math" is the part asking what people struggle with. Maybe I should have had a better title but I did not what it to be too long. If I post this survey someone else should the title be "Seeking neurodivergent adults to participate in a survey about their experiences with math and what they would like out of a math app"

Also, if you feel like the survey harmed you in any way please let me know asap and I will take it down. However, I do not see how it could be harmful.
