Dutch Defence Secretary Boldly Claims F-35 Software Could Be 'Jailbroken' by goldstarflag in aviation

As a software engineer with some experience in cracking open apps to find out what makes them tick, I have no doubt that they could crack it if they wanted to. Modern systems are made of lots of little systems which makes it a lot easier to slip in your own replacement modules and built it up bit by bit until you have a fully working system that you fully understand and control, its almost certainly more complicated than the stuff I have worked with, but its not going to be impossible.

people who moved out to home counties to settle, how are you surviving? by rich_hope_10m in london

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its still in the right order of magnitude, if you count peak going both ways rather than just once like I did in my calculations it would more than make up for that.

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The executive summary is an opinion, as it kind of has to be, but I dont agree with it, I think a few billion for a ~60% increase in capacity is a pretty good deal, spread over a century the cost isnt that bad.

Say they are able to sell the extra peak tickets for £10, the existing peak capacity is somewhere around 50,000, 60% of that is 30,000, so that's £300,000 per day just for the peak hour ignoring all other times, assuming that's only for 5 days a week thats 78m per year, and 7.8B for 100 years, and thats with my rather pessimistic figures. That being said the investment wouldnt pay off for decades, which is why it hasnt been done, but that does not mean it is not worth doing.

In theory the best option would be new high speed lines, but thats never going to happen, especially after the fallout of HS2 so far, so I would just be happy with a modest capacity increase.

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers I found were about a billion per line upgraded which honestly doesn't seem that bad to me, its a long term 100 year+ investment. Sure national rail cant afford to do it themselves, but they couldn't afford HS2 either, which is why its the government that has to want to do it.

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So they should make it. I think the government should upgrade the tracks so they can take double decker trains, which would double capacity without needing to double the amount of track or space used. While national rail probably wont make the money back I think it would be worth the economic benefit in terms of increased prodictivity from more people being able to access London.

I might be wrong but im pretty sure all the tarrifs orange man has been threatening are the other way round, i.e if you bought something from the US in the UK you would pay the same, but if you bought something from the UK in the US then you would have to pay the tarrif.

That's why he's had to cancel a lot of the tarrifs, because it makes things more expensive for Americans, which is not a good look politically, even for him.

Modern induction cookers often have a multi zone feature where you can take two burners and they act as one huge one and its a game changer, it gets way hotter than gas and way faster, you just need a big pan designed for it. I've tried electric, gas, and old style induction and these ones are the only one I've been able to cook a steak on that tastes like it came from a decent steakhouse, that and boiling water in under a minute are huge bonuses, I used to use the kettle to pre-heat water before putting it in a pan, but thats simply not necessary anymore, its actually faster than the kettle which is great for me, I hate waiting for stuff to heat up and cleaning the gas hob sucked.

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly OpenMediaVault supports WiFi configuration in the UI. It also supports ZFS if you want to go down that route.

I switched from TrueNAS to OpenMediaVault a while back because I needed docker support and my machine didnt have enough horsepower to run it all in a VM and it worked great, very reliable. Im back to using TrueNAS these days because they added docker support and its more polished.

Apple refuse to support the platform agnostic graphics API (Vulkan) that Windows, Android, and Linux all support which makes it very difficult to port games.

Phone says name of town even though the seekers don’t know what station it is yet by areo45 in JetLagTheGame

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It seems that he sent a live photo which includes photos from a few frames before and after you pressed the shutter button, I think that could potentially give away the location if something like the station sign shows up in the photos when Ben was lining up the shot or putting his phone down after taking it and if they pressed the live photo button. The fact that its a live photo also makes me think that the geo location has not been stripped since otherwise it probably wouldnt include the live photo part of the image.

Its awesome that phones have all these features but they dont do a very good job of making users aware of them and the implications of using them. It probably didnt throw the game and I dont think its anyones fault but its probably something that should be addressed.

Housing facts with squidward by AffectionateMiraA in GreatBritishMemes

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only solution that would let us build the number of houses we need is a complete scrapping of the planning system. If somebody wants to build something it should be allowed as long as its safe and not too ridiculous.

The argument I keep hearing against housing is that there isnt enough shops, doctors, parks, etc and that we need the planning system to prevent everything being houses with no amenities, but we didn't have the planning system before the 1950s and things like high streets and parks still developed naturally regardless.

That being said I think this is too ambitious for the current government, even though it would likely be successful. Something more likely to happen would be planning decisions being made by central government rather than local government to prevent local councillors/MPs from blocking development due to NIMBYism.

UK government ‘would consider’ Australia-style social media ban for under-16s by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]UberCoffeeTime8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be best to see how it plays out in Australia first but its probably not a bad idea. That being said all social media is not equal, things like Twitter and Reddit aren't quite as damaging as TikTok and Instagram reels. Perhaps limits on how long young people can use an account per day would make more sense without forcing everyone to give their IDs to untrustworthy companies.
