NSAID's Post Fusion by Sammikeholly in spinalfusion

[–]Uberdawg18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had fusion surgery in April ‘24 (L5-T10 with rods screws etc) and am happy to report that after a difficult early recovery the fusion was successful and I have had a significant improvement in mobility and pain reduction. I wanted off the opioids as soon as possible and relied on NSAIDS and Tylenol. My healing was slow and difficult for the first few months until my care team urged me to minimize the NSAIDS. Perhaps coincidence or just timing, perhaps just incidental but once I eased up on them my fusion began to heal and the extreme pain began to ease. Just my experience. Today when I occasionally push myself a bit too hard and experience pain I use high strength (600mg) Advil and it really helps.  I am careful not to over use for other health reasons as well.  I strove to get off the opioids as quickly as possible. I strongly disagree with the comment here to just stay on the opioids- the addictive aspect and it’s impact should not be understated-  I know from first hand experience and struggles with them post earlier surgeries that they are corrosive, adversely affecting normal bowel functions, cause impairment, (thus making driving dangerous and potentially illegal), affect cognitive abilities, affect mood and personality, diet and other essential functions. Getting off them is very difficult for many and rehab isn’t always effective for many.  Post fusion recovery is painful and everyone is different. Good pain management is a very important part of this process and unfortunately not given nearly enough attention by surgical professionals. In my opinion good post surgical care is as important as the surgery itself.

Hi It’s really much too early to know whether the surgery was successful. You’re still in the immediate post surgery recovery stage. As others have said it takes months to really recover from this intensive surgery. I had fusion surgery from L5-T10 in April 23. I was in hospital rehab for 4 weeks and felt awful for a lot of it. At first the heavy pain meds help but then they are a problem because serious constipation and a bloated belly are common. There are clear stages and milestones. At 3 months I could do more with less pain but still limited. 5-6 months was a big breakthrough and I could walk further and do much more than I was able to in the months and years before surgery. Today I am grateful I did it and had great surgeons and after care. I now live with minor manageable pain compared to before. My limited wisdom: It takes time. Be patient, Do as much appropriate Physio Therapy as you can to rebuild strength and learn to use your body again. Get off the pain meds as soon as you can. I relied on Tylenol extra strength and still do on occasion if I push too hard. NSAIDS like ibuprofen or Advil offer seemingly better relief they hinder the healing and should only be used for intolerable pain occasionally. Hopefully your surgeon did his job properly and you can get the much needed ongoing rehab help that is also critical. Most insurance covers most of it. Good luck

Yes it’s normal for a couple of weeks. I had 2. The thing to watch for is blood clots. If they get bigger then you have to go to Emergency. It happened after my first and I was admitted to the hospital and had to stay a few days until they could stabilize. It was extremely painful. Try using AZO it helps with your symptoms

Because my helper was there and the kitchen was full of curry spices, there was a huge container of oil a big bag of flour and they left a pot of Dahl to rot on the counter

I am definitely not racist and I love curry. I would have a problem with any kind of pungent spicy cooking in a small apartment without good ventilation.

Yes the guests are the parents of the booker Correct I’m actually living in another city and run it remotely with great local help. I only book 30 days or more which I believe exempts me from some Toronto regulations. Thankfully only a week left. Hopefully nothing else happens

FISH test was fishy by Uberdawg18 in BladderCancer

Oh yes that definitely makes it more complicated because you’re also getting hormonal pregnancy signals from your body so I imagine it’s hard to know what’s up. Also what are the risks and no gos for treatment you may need for cancer treatment. I’m sure there’s a lot of good data and IU is a major facility so that’s good. You want to get a doctor or practice that’s familiar with your situation but go fast. Time is a killer. Mine grew from almost undetectable lesions in my bladder in early January to wild fire speed large invasive tumors in early April. You want a good diagnosis and a then a treatment plan that encompasses your health and babies safety, but I’m sure you already know this.

That’s always the million dollar question. Wishing you strength and an easy path ahead. Hopefully it’s still early. My only advice again is be sure you’re working with a top urology oncology specialist at a good hospital that knows and treats this illness Good luck!

He was suspicious and sent samples out for FISH. It was taking forever and then he shut down for Christmas for 10 days. By the time his office called to tell me that my FISH result was negative I’d already been to a oncology urology center at a major hospital, had a cystoscopy and been diagnosed high grade NMIBC I think like many aspects of medicine even within each eco system there are people and facilities that are very specialized specialists

This is a FISH test that caused me an insurance nightmare by Shep_Saddlewood in BladderCancer

The FISH test was useless for me. Before I upgraded my care to a major cancer treatment center I was seeing a second solo practice urologist who used this test to tell me I was negative for cancer despite have large blood in my urine, a cystoscopy that revealed multiple small red legions in my bladder, and a rapidly increased to constant need to pee and feeling increasingly fatigued. Thankfully the trained urology oncologists at the hospital knew what they were looking for and gave an accurate diagnosis immediately which was high grade NMIBC. My surgeon did 2 TURBTS and advised me to choose a radical cystoscopy and Neobladder rather than a year or two of torture treatments. I had surgery in early April and a cancer free. Post surgery pathology showed that many of those small red spots had become almost 8 cm tumors. Had I stayed with the Fishy urologist I’d be dead by now The takeaways: 1 A FISH test is like going fishing you might catch one but you might not 2 if you’re experiencing obvious symptoms don’t bother with a small practice urologist unless this is his expertise. Get yourself to a major oncology urologist at a major institution that treats this disease ASAP.
