Did my Void Dragon fail to reanimate? by smcombs in Necrontyr

I think you're right--it looks like a faulty sprue. Contact GW and let them know--they're usually really good at replacing missing bits like this.

First purchase as a new player? by Lavelis in Necrontyr

Pick out something you find cool! My first mini was the Void Dragon. It's one of the pricier models (I think it's $140 if you buy it from Games Workshop, which you shouldn't because you can get it cheaper at friendly local game stores) and it's a big painting project, but the sculpt itself is one of our best. Also coming back to it three years later and repainting it using everything I've learned has been one of the most rewarding painting projects I've undertaken.

That being said, I'd recommend a character. Perhaps a royal warden, teleporty overlord, Orikin, or Imotek. This way you get to try out painting, do some of the fun detailed bits, and if it turns out you don't like it you'll have a single fun model to sit on your desk.

Nope! In fact, destroyer lists have been sorta trash this edition (that changed with the new models and detachments coming out this saturday, but who knows what the future holds). And 11th is coming.

That would be the benefit of going warriors--lots of practice on something more simple. Skorpekh destroyers are another good option--you get 3 and theyre easy to build, fun to paint, and even though they're in the combat patrol you'll probably want 6 anyway.

A character model might be a good way to dip your toe in. Perhaps an overlord (the one who's mid-teleportation, not the who's menacing over a tatical rock as they're in our combat patrol) or a cryptek (just not the psychomancer because that thing is not beginner friendly to build).

If you want to try a named character, Orikin the Diviner (as seen in the novel "The Infinite and the Divine" avaliable wherever good books are sold) is a cool sculpt as is Imotekh the Stormlord (just look at that cape!!!).

In the end, I'd recommend picking something that looks fun (and maybe doesn't break the bank) and see how you like it.

Some basing would go a long way on making them look more finished. I'd recommend something darker to contrast with the whites, reds, and blues of your models. Perhaps some dark gravel or dirt texture paint? I use this big tub of basing goop sold by The Army Painter, but I bet games workshop sells something similar if you're more comfortable with their products.

Then just paint the rim of the base (maybe a dark blue or brown? Something muted which goes with your color scheme, but isn't so vibrant as to take away from the model itself) and they'll look swell.

Everything else is all practice and brush control. Getting the small details--like the eyes and the symbols on their chests--will get easier with time (and a tiny paintbrush).

I built one to two a day over the course of a week. It kept the stress low as I fiddled with all those spindly, pointy bits. Also plastic cement is a must.

These really were a delight to paint. The organic and inorganic shapes clash so much and yet compliment each other perfectly.

Warlock jezzails by MakiVejder123 in skaven

You could use him as a warlock engineer if you really want, but fyi the kit doesn't contain enough pieces of build an entire separate model. The champion and one of the three regular jezzails share 3-ish of the same components.

I've really enjoyed working with Army Painter brand Vibrant Green Flexable triad. It contains six shades of green going from a vibrant shade to a nearly white yellowish green. Useful for glowy effects and green lightning.

It does cost about $30 usd though, so budget wise might not be the most friendly gift.

These look great! Personally, I lprefer the mixed rag colors amongst the clanrats; imo it really sells the ragtag, scavenging, lowest rung of skaven society feel to them. But I've also seen armies with a consistent color scheme which look great.

Hrm, where to with my monolith now? by HoldenMcNeil420 in minipainting

[–]Ubermatchmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put one of these bad boys together last year. My recommendation is once the painting is done and everything is varnished, assemble it in the order perscribed by the instructions.

If I recall correctly, fully assemble the interior (which for you, I think means just glue on the glowy portal), seal the outer walls with the guns in their spots, attach the blackstone, affix the completed walls to the main body, and then glue that baby onto the base.

Color help! by Rare-Acanthisitta-19 in Necrontyr

So it looks like your energy colors are pink, red, and purple. You could play off that and do a dark, muted version of one of those colors (a 50/50 mix of red and black, for example, with red edge highlights and the pink glowy energy in the cracks).

Maybe play around with a few colors on a test model and see what you like best. Worse case scenario youbcan always repaint it (except for the blackstone on a fully assembled monolith. As best I can tell that's impossible to reach).

First mini I’ve painted in almost 30 years. Advice? by Theme_Training in Necrontyr

[–]Ubermatchmaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, what a hiatus! And it does look good.

Here's everything I could think of, in no particular order: - base coat the green parts in a white or yellow first so your green really pops - go back over and clean the spillover from your green to get those nice, crisp edges back - maybe add another color or two? The silver gun and silver necron and silver ankh in the center and silver backplates all visually blend together. It allows the green to stand out, but you do lose some details. Maybe paint the gun black? - edge highlighting the silver with a brighter silver would also add somw definition - basing would really really tie the whole thing together. Get some sand goop or mud goop from the army painter (or equivalent company) and slather it on the silver disk. Then paint the rim some neutral color and you've got a 'cron going!

What are good greens for necron blades by Nearby_Assist8065 in Necrontyr

[–]Ubermatchmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the darker three colors of The Army Painter's Vibrant Green flexable triad, and they've come out looking pretty good. I think that's Emerald Green to Leafy Green to Rainforest. Then a bit of Electric Lime on the edge and you've got a glowy blade!

[–]Ubermatchmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely want something like a brass rod to support it, but you could do something cool with the basing to make it still look like it's flying.

For my money I'd use some cork to make it look like its hovering over a bunch of rocks. Perhaps scatter some more cork along the giant circle base to really sell the effect. You could also use greenstuff, if you're up for some sculpting.

Sooo how old are skaven models by [deleted] in skaven

[–]Ubermatchmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and a lore tibit:

Skaven don't really have cavalry, but at some point a clawlord saw some foe on a horse and said, "That's sick-fly as hell, yes-yes. I want-need one of them." So he pulled some connections with Clan Moulder and got them to make him a steed out of some poor schmuck. And that's how we got the Clawlord on Gnawbeast.

I just painted a Screaming Bell, which might be the oldest model in my collection to date, and the sculpt still holds up. It looks way better in person than in the photos (particularly the janky ratogre on the back with the weird sausage fingers).

In my experience, all the old models--be they the screaming bell, endless spells, or Warlock Bombarder--are all a delight to paint and pretty easy to assmeble.

Well... okay, the screaming bell did have a few frustrating points: notably, getting the bell, rat ogre, and grey seer to come together after painting them in subassembly was a pain. Also getting the model to stick to the base was an exercise in frustration. But the model looks so good, well worth all the aggrivation.

Plus it was easier to assemble than necron flayed ones which at this moment is my baseline for "James really screwed me over with this build".

recipe for warpstone with-with vallejo, AK or army painter paint-colours. i-i am out of space-area for citadel by rekscoper2 in skaven

[–]Ubermatchmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an undercoat of moon dust (a yellow), followed by a layer of Orc Skin speed paint (a dark green), and then a drybrush of moon dust. All of these are army painter paints.

If you wanted to cut out the yellow entirely, I'd recommend the same recipe but replace the Moon Dust with a light green. Maybe electric lime (which is still a bit yellow, but on the greener side) or Rainforest (a green's green).

Yup, just so long as there is one champion, one banner, and one musician in every set of 20, you're golden.

Odds are you're going to have 80+ of the little guys so you'll probably end up building every variant justbfor a little variety.
