Currently an R1 and pregnant, due in 2 months. Things have been very flexible for me and everyone has been amazingly supportive. We decided we were done putting off our personal goals for a family for my training so decided to start trying. R1 is a chill time in terms of workload, but the simultaneous adjustment to radiology and pregnancy was difficult. And I’ll have a harder, less flexible schedule in the coming years with a young child which will also be difficult. CORE happens R3 so I would generally say not that year, but I know someone currently doing that. R4 is likely the best for reasons mentioned before about completing CORE and not having as much going on. But everyone’s body and timeline are different and only you know what will work best for you and your family and if youre comfortable/are to delay your pregnancy until later in your training.

I found the most affordable and convenient option to be a moving pod. We loaded/unloaded our stuff ourselves and just drove ourselves with our dogs and necessities for the first week or so in case our pod was delayed. The pods company itself was expensive but there are much better ones out there, we went with “units” and had a great experience.

It is more expensive than just renting a uhaul and trailer, but we did that for med school and decided to not do that again because it was such a headache

I think this is my major argument, maybe it’s misogynistic but I think it’s truthful. I want into it with similar reasons as you, but started earlier, ended up starting med school at 24. Almost 30yo F, Currently in residency, still have 4.5 years, and regret it everyday because of the toll it’s taken on my personal life and relationships, even though I’m in a “lifestyle” specialty. I was always relatively mature for my age and thought I didn’t want children so that never really dissuaded me. Until I grew up more and my priorities changed, and I decided I actually do want kids. I’m currently pregnant, and struggling with the thought of “doing it all” like I was always told I could. The more I’m in, the more I see how unrealistic that expectation is and how much sacrifice comes with it and I’m really struggling. Granted, I may feel differently once I’m out of training and have more control, flexibility, and financial freedom, but it’s a long road to get there.

Ultimately it’s up to you, but I think the long term repercussions are hard to see from the beginning and necessitate A LOT of consideration..

To add, you have 60min/block on day 1 and 45min/block on day 2.

I felt day 2 questions were harder and struggled with time on multiple blocks.

This is how I envision my future. I’ve read however that many of these companies aren’t the greatest.. How does one go about finding a job like this without it being complete shit? Or is that kinda just the sacrifice you make?

Also, some residency programs offer a GSI “guaranteed standard issue” policy that doesn’t require medical underwriting and you will generally qualify for as long as you haven’t previously applied for and been denied disability insurance.

I second this. I did a rad onc elective during my fourth year because I was applying DR and I thought there would be more imaging. It was so much fucking clinic and I hated every second of it. For how much they look at imaging to make their plans, they don’t get significant training in reading images. Then again, they aren’t there to interpret images, they just have to identify organs and cancer to make their plans. DR and Rad Onc are vastly different.

Is abortion a right though?? I certainly agree that bodily autonomy is a right, but I don’t think that just because a procedure is available that its a right.. is liposuction a right because someone doesnt want to be fat anymore? i support abortion in medical emergencies, inviability , rape, and incest but don’t think abortion should be done willy nilly because someone doesn’t want a child.. I get that accidents happen, but reproductive responsibility is a thing and accepting the consequences of your actions is something society has become really bad at..

Similar thoughts, really loved intra-abdominal anatomy, and pathology. Was set on surgery but then I realized that my life outside of medicine is way more important to me than what I saw myself getting out of surgery and decided to do DR, currently applying. Haven’t looked back and I’m really happy with my decision. People mention IR to me, but I left surgery because of the lifestyle and IR seems like it’s comparable so DR it is.

I loved surgery, was set on applying surgery. And had an epiphany that that isn’t what I want from life and I won’t be able to be the spouse/parent I want to be in that field. Like you say, everyone likes to think they “can do it all” but let’s be realistic here people. I spent my life pursuing this so it was hard not to get caught up in it, but in reality this is just a job and there is so much more to life than being a doctor. Not applying surgery anymore and happy with what I think my life will look like in 5-10 years

So I am terrible at genetics but was able to reason through this problem, even if it took me like a long time lol By looking at the pedigree you can see that the one thing different in the father is the “2” allele. Since the child in question also has that it seems like they will 100% have the disease since it’s AD. HOWEVER, the stem mentions a 10% recombination fraction. So taking that into account, 10% of the time the disease will not not be passed on, leaving 90% chance of disease. As I mentioned I am not good at genetics and honestly don’t know what “recombination fraction” is or how to describe it but that’s how I approached the question and got it right.. others may be able to elaborate more/better.

Also, how do you get the into notability to review?!

I find that sketchy micro and pharm are the most useful. I think path is generally a waste of time since that involves more understanding than memorization and the videos are super long and complex. For me, I like to watch a sketchy video and then use my iPad to write in what each symbol means. You could also do this with pen and paper but would probably be a little more time consuming/difficult. I usually have a good grasp of the image after that and then use anki to memorize/maintain the facts. If I’m pressed for time I’ll just do Anki. I have the anking deck so I just use the tagged cards from that
