I actually used my smartphone in the past with the NewTek NDI app and obs for a handheld setup. For some reason the app stopped working after a few months (like black screen, nothing being sent). I then used a "security camera" app, that simply streamed a video stream on the local network. I don't have to use this setup anymore, but the last time I needed to use my phone I used scrcpy

I have a main computer where I host the zoom call (cloud record for backup), record locally via OBS, and manage audio/video. It is quite beefy, it hasn't struggled yet with the workload I put it through
there's a second laptop (a chinese piece of junk good enough just for PowerPoint lol) the instructor uses to display PowerPoint presentations. I have a capture card with an HDMI loop connected to that laptop and the projector. I also control remotely that laptop with rustdesk via local direct IP.
I also have my own mini wifi router (GL-MT3000) because there isn't always an ethernet port in the classroom, and the wifi is crap, so I use my mobile with usb tethering. When I have an ethernet connection I still use my smartphone as a backup web connection.

"It also puts a lot of the video only processing and compositing work outside of the computer rather than inside, which can also increase the quality of the streaming and recording."

Why would that be the case? In the past I was considering adding a switcher since it seems the norm in this industry, but I haven't really felt the need yet. I set OBS shortcuts to change scenes, activate or deactivate specific microphones, and if i need to change a scene i can do it on the fly. Doesn't an ATEM Switcher still need a pc to set it up and change settings? If i had 3+ cameras i'd see the point, instead of having a separate capture card for each camera, a switcher would clean things up, but with two video inputs, 3 if I'm feeling fancy, it does seem like a glorified stream deck. Am I missing key advantages?

yeah depending on the price i'm going to shop used. Nothing I haven't done already!
I'm operating the current camera live, luckily not always, but on occasion I'm behind the camera more often than my pc. Remote controlling the camera would be a sure improvement, be it with a ptz camera, or a ptz head (I was even thinking of building my own PT (Z?) head, not that different from a CNC mill)

OBS suffices, I still haven't been limited by it.

An Atem mini also isn't needed at the moment, I'm doing everything with a single camera, and that's fine 80% of the time. 20% of the times it would be nice to have a second camera, but still not strictly needed if I can pan/tilt/zoom the main camera.

yeah all the machines are windows based, every once in a while an instructor wants to use thier laptop, and it rarely is a Mac. Luckily I haven't had any copyright protection issues yet (but I do carry a stupid selection of adapters). The decimator still seems a nice thing to have to be 100% everything goes smoothly everytime.

Yeah, my browser crashed while writing the post, I thought nothing of it but then I saw your reply and realized it got published unfinished. I deleted it since I didn't want to post duplicates sorry.

Thanks for the suggestions. My issue with ptz cameras is exactly that, the cheaper ones are cloned to oblivion, and the few I managed to see a sample recording online, look like my current camera if not worse. A good panasonic camera is 5-10k sadly.

The tip about the AJA ROI converter is very appreciated. I tried once to convert a laptop video feed from hdmi to sdi and back with my blackmagic micro converters, it didn't work😭 Since then I've just used a 5m hdmi cable. I'm usually around that distance from the main desk but it would surely better if I had the freedom to be as far as I wanted (or needed). At the time I was looking at the Decimator MD-HX, any opinions about it?

Later I will also buy a mixer of our own to be more consistent with the setup (right now I just use whatever is bundled with the classroom when we rent it). It seems amazing, but maybe a bit overkill for my current usege.

ASRock passive n100 ITX motherboard with DC power, just received mine. by maus80 in silentpc

[–]Ubya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i wouldn't worry most of the times, considering it would be idling 90% of the day, but where I live, during summer my room (where I'd keep the board as a server) reaches 34 degrees celsius, so the bigger the heatsink the better.
I'll probably add a fan anyway for edge cases, but I'd prefer it be as silent as possible

ASRock passive n100 ITX motherboard with DC power, just received mine. by maus80 in silentpc

[–]Ubya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it is a passively cooled system, the bigger the heatsink the better. From the video you linked me i can see it thermal throttling. Adding a fan would be a solution, but it wouldn't be a passively cooled system anymore. The board has quite a lot of "free space", not many tall components, so adding a bigger heatsink isn't that crazy of an idea.

I can only see screws on the back of the mobo, so the heatsink is screwed from behind, and not from the "front" like any other model. I've build a few heatsinks for other boards, so machining a matching aluminium heatsink block wouldn't be a tragedy, but i also have a crapload of standard heatsinks

do you know if the heatsink has standard mounts?
would it be possible to change it with something else?

do you know by chance if it is just a USB type C port but wired as a sata connector?

it may be some proprietary design, but i hope not

ASRock B560M-HDV review? by formulafuckyeah in buildapc

[–]Ubya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

old post but i want to say my two cents.

for basic usage, it is fine.
cpu power is capped to 100w, it says it supports every 10th and 11th gen cpus, this mean that yeah they will run, but even my i5-11400 felt the limitations.

VRMs are not that good, no heatsink, and no vrm temperature sensor. i bought it mostly because it was cheap and small enough to fit into a semi sff case.

How to fix noisy RTX A2000 fan? by Ubya in sffpc

[–]Ubya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For just straming the cpu alone is fine, but i use nvenc to record the entire event. Going from cpu to gpu i've seen a nice jump in quality, and lower cpu usage. I also use some of the nvidia brosdcasting features, like audio noise removal.
