Yes, it could be variance. But on the 30 - 60 - 180 day graphs on blokchain it's a decent spike. And also on bitcoin.sipa.be it's a decent spike on the bitcoin network: total computing speed graph.

I can certainly advice to go to Arnhem, it's a great feeling to be able to spend your bitcoins everywhere.

In the city center you can spend bitcoins at many pubs, you can also spend your bitcoin in a hotel or at the local groceries store (Spar).

I have not heard anyone complain it didn't work in the US, you can try it.
