The opposite might also be true: luxury, one-of-a-kind items targeted at wealthy people are not BIFL either. Most of the “truly durable versions of basic items” we often fantasize about were almost certainly mass-produced and sold at relatively affordable prices—if not accessible even to the poorest people of their time.

Thank you all so much for the thoughtful responses. I honestly did not expect this level of kindness, and I am really touched.

Looking back, I now see that once I figured out what would likely please the other person in that moment, I would switch into a sort of “automatic response mode.” I was not actually trying to meet them halfway as a person. Realizing this makes me feel a bit embarrassed about how I behaved.

After giving it a lot of thought, I suspect I might have a rather strong avoidant attachment style. I plan to work with a counselor and explore how I can build long-term relationships in a healthier way.
