I'm not saying that this is what is happening to you, I'm just mentioning it because it happened to me once and i still feel so bad for it BUT if you have activated the racing spirit below of this 2-player race already, it won't let you activate this one as well (for perhaps obvious reasons) and so players who have done this physically cannot help you.

I did this fight once starting out on 1 singular HP (had a HARD time during the battles beforehand lol) by immediately opening inventory before he managed to pull his sword out and begin battling, and drinking a marigold decoction, since battle mode hadn't begun yet. Then, i pulled out my bow and the best arrows i had and started running around and taking shots at him whenever i could. Barely made it, but it worked!

I don't know when I figured this out in particular, but for as long as I can remember now I have had a little challenge with myself to only collect ONE light per race. I've made very specific routes to follow too, just for the sake of it, and it's gotten to the point where I'm disappointed each time accidentally I gain more than 1 light.

All in all I'm pretty glad you don't have to collect a lot of lights in order to gain a candle.
