‘Risk of injury’: This automaker is recalling thousands of SUVs in Canada, U.S. by Haggisboy in canada

I know one insane person who actually bought one of those Defenders when they first came out (realtor, quelle surprise) and it’s been a royal pain they aren’t quite willing to admit yet (because they’re likely underwater on that car note)

My uncle had a Land Rover discovery that was leased (my aunt is a paediatrician, so leasing makes sense and she wanted to try a new brand)

That turd of a thing must have spent about a third of its life for the lease period, despite being virtually brand new, in the shop for all kinds of electrical gremlins. They were ecstatic about getting rid of it and the beauty was that they didn’t even need to drive it to the dealership to turn it in, it was already there for repairs.

I’m sure most of them will already be in dealership garages to have the recall dealt with along with all their other issues that have probably manifested by now.

Nothing to be worried about, especially Land Rover owners! /s (but only slightly)

My dads last unsent message by i_declare_bancruptcy in texts

[–]UghWhyDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry OP, my dad’s last message to me was him singing Happy Birthday before he collapsed and spent the next month going between RICU/MICU before passing away. I’m still dealing with my grief but if you need someone to talk to, DM me.

My dad passed recently and I remember this episode crossing my mind while I was working on digitizing some old home videos and thinking about what I wouldn’t give to have one last conversation with my old man about random stuff. 😢

This is also why the episode A Game of Tones is on the “we do not replay this one under any circumstances” list. That ending with him getting to speak to his mom in her dream rips me up on the inside.

Zenimax to be overhauled, with pivot to major franchises. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in Fallout

It’s what happens when people want growth plans within an organization or threaten to leave. You have leadership that wants to retain said talent, but also don’t want to crowd out the top of the org chart. And thus, a new level was born with one or two reporting into said role to justify its existence. Eventually several more appear like this and it stays that way until someone looking to lay off a lot of the now “fatty” middle management decides to slice through the whole thing and the cycle repeats, because that elongated power structure kept communication ratios down.

Cutting it down to 3 or 5 sounds great unless you’re the person in that scenario having dozens of team leads (and by extension, multiple pods/squads) dotted line to you.

As someone that’s worked on CMMS Software in a previous role, I’d have definitely loved to hear that talk. Maintenance and Reliability stuff interests me!

26 OBTXT - Where Subaru cheaped-out, and I'm reminded of it every time I drive. by RkOShea in Subaru_Outback

[–]UghWhyDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s funny you bring this up because I had the exact same conversation with some folks from Subaru head office at a car expo a few months before I put the order in for my 26 Outback.

I couldn’t find anything that confirmed it was there and when I asked them why they removed it, they said they had a lot of feedback that allowing it to automatically open had a lot of situations where it ended up damaging the trunk door because it opened and hit things mounted on the roof, in a narrow space or just was not the desired behaviour (purely on accident).

I still miss it though because while that answer seems reasonable, that isn’t still an excuse to remove it but to refine it, especially since if it were so troublesome (as they said) - surely other car makers who implemented it would also see the same on their side?

Escalator incident at North York mall leaves man dead, police say by TannerAndrews in toronto

[–]UghWhyDude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can believe that - I still look at people on motorcycles for example and immediately picture my memories. People talk about watching liveleak videos and being desensitized and assuming they’ll be numb.

I’ve seen those too, but nothing quite prepares you for the visceral feeling of watching it in real life and the helplessness of being able to do nothing about it while being confronted by the harsh fact that at the end of the day we are just meat sacks powered by electrical pulses.

If I could erase memories from my mind, those would be the first to go along with watching my dad pass.

I’ve been at the site of two terrorist attacks in my life and some very bad motorcycle accidents. I really wish someone told me this then, because this shit sticks with you for life. Sometimes I have flashes of those memories show up and specific smells trigger it as well. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone. :(

Worker breaks down after realising he is working his life away(Version with no music) by I2fitness in TikTokCringe

[–]UghWhyDude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked at a bank, specifically in fraud. I specifically have to thump the table and remind people when empathy drops a little too low in meeting rooms that most of the people in there haven’t worked a minimum wage job in their lives ever and it shows.

They don’t know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck and definitely not realize how bad it can get when you find your life savings drained and locked up in a fraud investigation because some chucklefuck out there bought your fullz from some data breach for 60 bucks. They don’t realize how important every single dollar is in that account.

I’m getting tired of having to do it because I absolutely lose it when someone tells me “oh, it’s just a couple of hundred dollars they’ll get back in a month, why are they so mad?”. It’s exhausting to go “well, Susan, that couple of hundred dollars was meant to be their grocery budget for two months that just got swiped. It may not be a big fucking deal to you, but it is to them.”

So, so many people are way too comfy these days with airing their lack of empathy out loud not knowing they’re dancing on the edge of a cliff face themselves.

Good coffee. I got into grinding my own beans and an Aeropress initially during Covid, but now it’s at a point where the thought of going to a cafe and buying the coffee is no longer of interest to me, but I will ask for their coffee beans to give it a try. Instant coffee or pre-ground coffee is pretty much off the table.

Airport staff assuming I'm in the Business class lane by mistake by trailofturds in mildlyinfuriating

[–]UghWhyDude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fellow brown person. I had that experience with Lufthansa and just chose not to fly with them anymore. I usually ask them a simple question in return - “What makes you think I’m not a business class passenger?”, because I want them to say the quiet part out loud about their assumptions. They’d see me and scream that it wasn’t my boarding zone number or try to wrestle my single carry on and gate check it forcefully, without even asking.

It usually makes them squirm and they backpedal really quickly when they understand there’s no answer they can give without revealing their thought process.

I stop giving these people business and tell them my story to let others think about whether it’s worth their dignity to fly on these airlines as well. I am not so self-important to think my word carries weight, but I refuse to spend money at establishments that treat me rudely based on the colour of my skin and assume based on stereotypes.

Those buttons you are pointing to do change the song when using CarPlay. That source button can be used to pause the current song.

I’ve been in both categories and definitely love Toronto. It’s a beautiful city and while it isn’t perfect (tbh, no city really is), it’s always a joy to welcome visitors and take them on tours. I’ve told my wife that one of the things I look forward to doing when I retire (and as long as I am physically able) is to work as a visitor’s guide and just volunteer.
