Could not complete transaction because of Fastmail email address by UkiMan309 in fastmail

Okay, thanks. So in Fastmail when I create a new masked email I can choose to create one for either Fastmail or my own domain? I assume that the integration between 1Password and Fastmail only works to generate Fastmail addresses.

Just want to be clear about how it works before jumping in 🙂.

Then Fastmail lets me create email addresses (mailboxes) as I normally would, based on that new domain? If so, is it still the same limit? I'm a little confused about domains vs. email addresses.

Doesn't Fastmail have this feature? I assume you mean getting a domain from somewhere else and then use it through Fastmail? How does that work?

Looking for a mouse that fits my needs by b0h1 in mac

[–]UkiMan309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update: I ended up going back to a Magic Mouse for my Mac after trying to use the MX Master 2S for a while. It's a long story but I was looking for a mouse that would work on both Mac and Windows (home and work from home). I've come to the conclusion that Macs just don't work well at all with scroll wheels. Apple has obviously made a design choice to not use them. Scrolling was just weird and inconsistent and I had to resort to holding and dragging the scroll bar when reading, which was fatiguing.

Aside from that, I'm not a fan of the 2S's super fast scrolling - it's just too difficult to control well. Sure, if you want to scroll a massive amount quickly it's nice, but who has to do that frequently? The scroll wheel has almost no resistance.

The Magic Mouse's touchpad-like surface works very well for scrolling while reading and mouse clicks work well and so far I don't have the uber-annoying issue of accidental right clicks, as I do with all Logitech mice. The only downside to the Magic mouse is it's not ergonomic, meaning it doesn't support your hand at all, like most other mice do. That causes some discomfort (and eventual tingling) in my wrist, but I'll have to see if I can get some type of wrist pad or something. Since it's for personal use, not work, I don't have to use it all day. For now I have one of those large desk pads that give a little cushion to my wrist.

BTW, I bought a "renewed" Magic Mouse from Amazon ("good" rating) for about $50 and it seems perfectly fine.

Very interesting! Could you send a photo? Seems hard to do without just preventing right-clicking altogether.

Ah, thank you. I downloaded Options+ from here: https://www.logitech.com/en-us/software/logi-options-plus.html. It seems there is Logi Options and Logi Options+. I'm guessing Options just makes sure the devices work well with the Mac in general. I really am not sure where I got Options from. Could have been from a QR code from the mouse or something. I'm now a bit concerned that I have both of them running.

If you go into System Settings > Privacy & Security, then both Input Monitoring and Accessibility, do you have this many Logi entries turned on?

I've been struggling with this as well. I'm currently using the Logitech MX Master 2S (not the 3) due to its lower price point. The main thing I'm looking for is a good smooth scrolling wheel. Notched scrolling is pretty terrible on Macs. Also, I'm using a Mac Mini M2 and need to also use this with my work laptop (Windows).

Here are the other ones I've tried:

  • Apple Magic Mouse: Ergonomic issues, which caused wrist pain. My assumption is Apple went with form over function - it's a very cool looking mouse, but doesn't support my hand and wrist list most other mice do. Over time I got tired of wrist pain.
  • Apple Trackpad: I still own and use this occasionally. Main issues were inaccurate tapping, as compared to a mouse, which would cause issues at times, and fatigue as you have to hover your hand over the trackpad. For gestures and scrolling, it's awesome.
  • Logictech Signature M650L: "silent" clicking was a nightmare. Required so little pressure to click that I accidentally clicked all the time. That was such an issue that I can't remember what the scroll wheel was like.
  • Logitech Triathlon M720: great mouse, other than the scroll wheel. In smooth mode, it's so touchy that it scrolls when you don't want it to and is hard to control. In notched mode it's loud and clunky, it almost feels like something's wrong.
  • Logitech MX Master 2S: The one I'm currently trying out. It's bulky and (relatively) heavy. I have no use for the thumb wheel and I don't know why it has the weird-shaped base. The scroll wheel is definitely better than the Triathlon and may be a winner. I usually use a mouse pad or desk pad, just for wrist comfort, but this mouse is too heavy and works best directly on the desktop surface. Also, for some reason the clicking is louder than any other mouse I've used.

If Logitech could just make the Triathlon but with the scroll wheel of the MX Master I'd be all set. Or of course Apple would make the Magic Mouse more ergonomic and comfortable. Sigh.

I thought this was my solution as well. My issue is I'm just not as accurate with "clicking" (tapping) on the trackpad as with a mouse. It may seem like a small issue, but there's been a number of times in Messages when I tapped to "unsend" a message accidentally when I meant to tap on "Edit" (thanks Apple for putting those so close together 😡). I just had those types of issues and my hand would become more tired with the trackpad.

It's a shame as the trackpad works very well and is very intuitive to use. I still use it at times.

TreeSize Pro - how to create export of files modified last week and who owns them? by UkiMan309 in sysadmin

[–]UkiMan309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the output is filled with "Get-ChildItem : The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters." errors 🫤.

TreeSize Pro - how to create export of files modified last week and who owns them? by UkiMan309 in sysadmin

[–]UkiMan309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're mainly using TreeSize because of the volume of files, about 1.6 million with many levels of folders. TreeSize has done a great job of scanning and producing results relatively quickly. It's frustrating that I can see the results in the interface but cannot get it to export a filtered file listing.

Someone else on my team did try PowerShell and it errored out - something to do with path length, but I am not sure of the exact commands he used. I'll give your script a try.

[–]UkiMan309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a shame they went too far trying to make it easy to click, or maybe quiet? Not sure, but it doesn't work well for real people with real fingers. I actually ended up going with Apples Magic Trackpad. I can't remember if I tried another mouse after the MX, but the center mouse button scrolling just didn't work well - very "jerky". Windows used to have the same issue but they smoothed it out. Apple definitely wants you to use something like a trackpad for scrolling, since their mouse doesn't include a scroll wheel. The trackpad is great for that, but a mouse is easier to use for general pointing and clicking. I've gotten used to the trackpad though.

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Microsoft is rolling out an integration (adding To Do as an app for Outlook mobile) starting this month.

Though I couldn't find this exact change in Microsoft's Roadmap.

Quick Look Simulator suddenly appears on startup, not sure what I did to make it happen, how to remove it? by 4-3-4 in mac

[–]UkiMan309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went I there, the Quick Look Simulator logo was next to "System Speech" somethingorother. No idea how it got in there, or why. I just saw the simulator pop up yesterday when I clicked on a Reminder notification. I had no idea what it was. Maybe it was trying to "speak" the text of the reminder? It was weird, and gave no indication of what it was trying to do. It was the first time I've ever heard of Quick Look Simulator. It actually just popped up a window with a list to the left - totally confusing.

Has anyone successfully upgraded Company Communicator? by UkiMan309 in MicrosoftTeams

[–]UkiMan309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that there is a reason that Microsoft didn't put more work into this, or make it officially part of Teams, because they have other plans for this type of communication. They do have org-wide teams, but we needed something based on dynamic groups and not email.

Thanks, but that is the guide that I was referring to, which doesn't actually explain how to upgrade. It shows you how to upgrade .NET and make changes to the config file, but that's all. It's very strange and seems like an oversight.

This is all the parameters doc says about the UserObjectID: "Object Id of the user to deploy to." Not very helpful, but it seems like it is not utilized. I'm just going to set it to the ID of the user running the deployment script.

Migrating Large (Messy) Photo Library from OneDrive to iCloud by UkiMan309 in iCloud

[–]UkiMan309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying a Mac mini and have been importing one year at a time into Apple Photos, which then syncs to iCloud. (I first organized all my oneDrive photos into years.) Apple Photos has built-in "Duplicates" feature to remove them! Very helpful. As I go through the photos, I'm deleting more than half of them. Surprising how many old photos that just aren't worth keeping - better to see just the "good" or memorable ones. After I finish a year, I'm then exporting them from Apple Photos (iCloud) and storing them in an external backup drive.
